Preliminary Report Of Animal Bones From Hrísheimur, Mývatn District, Northern Iceland, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

In 2000 and 2001 the FSl / NABO project Landscapes of Settlement in Northern Iceland collected animal bones from the heavily eroded site of Hrísheimur south of lake Mývatn. The 2001 season produced a substantial archaeofauna from a 2 x 2 meter test excavation of a midden deposit that apparently fills a small sunken-feature structure. While further excavations are planned to collect more material and to better understand the deposit and site as a whole, it may be useful to provide an interim overview of the bone materials recovered from the largest context (003) of the midden deposit tested in …

Using Complexity Theory To Select Between Leaders And Managers, Michael W. Jordan May 2002

Using Complexity Theory To Select Between Leaders And Managers, Michael W. Jordan

Theses and Graduate Projects

Several authors have attempted recently to extend Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) theory to organizations and business management (Wheatley, 1992; Lind, 1994; Beccone, 1998; Zimmerman, Lindberg & Plsek, 1998, Eoyang & Olson, 2001). The theory might be useful for practitioners, but it cannot provide detailed scientific predictions. The following questions are posed for analysis: Could CAS theory be applied to hiring and promoting leaders and managers? Would it be possible, and would it make sense, for organizations to identify emergent leaders as management prospects given Beccone's analysis of the distinction between leaders and managers? How might the procedures and results likely …

The Secret Garden, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2001-2002 Season

When young Mary Lennox loses her parents to a cholera outbreak in India, she is sent to live with her uncle, hermit Archibald Craven, who lives in an imposing, secluded manor on the British heath. Inside the haunting house upon the hill, Mary finds a reclusive, long-suffering collection of souls. Surrounded by spirits from the past, who both warn and welcome her, determined Mary begins to peel away the layers of sadness that cover the house and the garden, showing us the power that “one small girl” can have when she “wants things to grow.”

Name-Bearing Types And Taxonomic Synopsis Of Three Lycaenid Butterfly Taxa From Western Canada (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), Norbert G. Kondla, Crispin S. Guppy

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

We clarify which of two designated lectotypes of Chrysophanus florus Edwards, 1884 is valid. We also show that the putative holotype of Plebeius saepiolus insulanus Blackmore, 1920 is actually a lectotype. A valid neotype designation for Lycaena saepiolus amica Edwards, 1863 is provided. Publication dates are corrected and we also briefly review the various taxonomic interpretations and distributions that appear in the literature with respect to these taxa.

Conservation In The “New Farm Program”, Richard T. Clark May 2002

Conservation In The “New Farm Program”, Richard T. Clark

Cornhusker Economics

Conservation programs took a giant leap forward with the 1985 Food Security Act, which introduced the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Wetlands Reserve and Conservation Compliance among other things. Since then, those programs have changed some but have been relatively stable both in terms of funding and type. With the recently completed “Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002” conservation programs are poised to move to an even higher plateau.

Heritability And Repeatability Of Sexual Performance Scores Of Rams, G. D. Snowder, J. N. Stellflug, L. Dale Van Vleck May 2002

Heritability And Repeatability Of Sexual Performance Scores Of Rams, G. D. Snowder, J. N. Stellflug, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Sexual performance has been subjectively measured with a libido test during screening of rams before public sale and breeding at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station from 1990 to 2000. The objective of this study was to determine whether sexual performance was genetically influenced. Sexual performance scores ranged from 1 to 6 with scores increasing from sexually inactive to highly sexually active in the presence of estrous ewes. The overall average score was 3.5 ± 0.02. Records from four breeds (Columbia, n = 807; Polypay, n = 1,668; Rambouillet, n = 1,208; and Targhee, n = 1,002) were combined into one …

A System For Emergency Care Ventilator Control, Brad Brian, Ken Johnson May 2002

A System For Emergency Care Ventilator Control, Brad Brian, Ken Johnson

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Closed-loop control of mechanical ventilators could have a positive impact on pre-hospital patient care. Several methods to achieve this goal have been researched. A current method entitled "Adaptive Volume ventilation" is being studied in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah Health Science Center. Preliminary clinical trials using the work of breathing model have shown that optimal settings for respiratory rate are significantly higher and optimal settings for tidal volume are significantly lower than those set by clinicians. Measured respiratory rate and tidal volumes were 9.7+/-1.4 bpm and 8.9+/-1.9 ml/kg, respectively. Optimal ventilator settings were calculated to be …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Collagenase (Mmp-1, Mmp-13) Genes In Arthritis: Integration Of Complex Signaling Pathways For The Recruitment Of Gene-Specific Transcription Factors, Matthew P. Vincenti, Constance E. Brinckerhoff May 2002

Brinckerhoff

Dartmouth Scholarship

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1, MMP-8 and MMP-13 are interstitial collagenases that degrade type II collagen in cartilage; this is a committed step in the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Of these enzymes, the expression of MMP-1 and MMP-13 is substantially increased in response to IL-1 and tumor necrosis factor-α, and elevated levels of these collagenases are observed in arthritic tissues. Therefore, cytokine-mediated MMP-1 and MMP-13 gene regulation is an important issue in arthritis research. In this review, we discuss current models of MMP-1 and MMP-13 transcriptional regulation, with a focus on signaling intermediates and transcription factors that may be future …

Fibroblast Growth Factor–Specific Modulation Of Cellular Response By Syndecan-4, Arie Horowitz, Eugene Tkachenko, Michael Simons May 2002

Fibroblast Growth Factor–Specific Modulation Of Cellular Response By Syndecan-4, Arie Horowitz, Eugene Tkachenko, Michael Simons

Dartmouth Scholarship

Proteoglycans participate in growth factor interaction with the cell surface through their heparan sulfate chains (HS), but it is not known if they are otherwise involved in growth factor signaling. It appears now that the syndecan-4 core protein, a transmembrane proteoglycan shown previously to bind phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP(2)) and activate PKC alpha, participates in mediating the effects of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)2 on cell function. Mutations in the cytoplasmic tail of syndecan-4 that either reduced its affinity to PIP(2) (PIP(2)(-)) or disrupted its postsynaptic density 95, disk large, zona occludens-1 (PDZ)-dependent binding (PDZ(-)) produced a FGF2-specific dominant negative phenotype in …
