A Comparative Study Of Third-Grade Students' Use Of Children's Web Directories, Kristin Montanero May 2002

A Comparative Study Of Third-Grade Students' Use Of Children's Web Directories, Kristin Montanero

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this naturalistic case study was for 72 third-grade students to effectively use the children's Web directories Yahooligans and Kidsclick to locate specific information on the Internet and then to compare the success rates of the two directories. The researcher taught a three-week unit of instruction on searching children's' Web directories to locate information. Students completed a five-question worksheet in which they were required to do a keyword search on a specified directory to answer each question. Students recorded their answers, the number of Websites visited to locate each answer, and the URL of the Website where the …

University of Mississippi News

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- Modern soldiers rely on an increasingly high-tech array of gadgets in combat, but they still bleed to death at roughly the same rate as their Civil War counterparts. A device using sound waves to improve those odds is being developed at the University of Mississippi.

How Vulnerable Is The Nation's Food Supply? Linking Food Safety And Food Security, Robin J. Strongin May 2002

How Vulnerable Is The Nation's Food Supply? Linking Food Safety And Food Security, Robin J. Strongin

National Health Policy Forum

This paper reviews the food safety regulatory apparatus in place today, especially the activities of the two lead agencies in assuring food safety — the Food and Drug Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food Safety and Inspection Service within the Department of Agriculture. It examines the system's strengths and vulnerabilities, particularly in light of the post–September 11 environment that includes the heightened threat of terrorism. The paper also touches upon legislative and budgetary proposals aimed at improving food security, including the growing but debated interest in a single food safety agency.

Pollination Biology Of The Lingonberry, Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea Subsp. Minus L., Amy Nicole Davis May 2002

Pollination Biology Of The Lingonberry, Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea Subsp. Minus L., Amy Nicole Davis

Theses (Unassigned)

The pollination biology of lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea subsp. minus L.) was researched to determine possible modes of pollination and methods to enhance pollination for increased fruit set. A viability experiment showed that pollen germinates best in a nutrient solution with 10.5 g sucrose per 100 ml. Exposing lingonberry flowers to wind speeds up to 22 km per hr resulted in little pollen release and negligible fruit set. Vibration of flowers at 170-730 Hz showed ample pollen release at all frequencies but negligible fruit set by self pollination. Although honeybees and bumblebees frequently visited lingonberry flowers, addition of hives to wild …

The Social Construction Of Self In Fan Cultures: Creating Self Identity In Fan Communities, Susan Diane Hazlett

Communication

Star Trek fans have long been portrayed in the media as overweight women and geeky men. This study takes a closer look at Star Trek fans and their lived experience. Through conversational interviewing, the nature of the reality experienced in fandom is explored and implications for the relationship between the reality shared by participants in everyday life and the reality shared by fandom is sought. The analysis, which was carried out throughout the interview process, provided insights into the realities experienced by fans.

The Tingmiukpuk Site (Kir-273): A Prehistoric Site Along The Killik River, Alaska, Aaron C. Robertson May 2002

The Tingmiukpuk Site (Kir-273): A Prehistoric Site Along The Killik River, Alaska, Aaron C. Robertson

Anthropology

Tingmiukpuk (KIR-273), a prehistoric archaeological site, lies in a dune field on the east bank of the Killik River in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The site consists of several surface scatters of cultural material on and around three large dune prominences. Field research was conducted during the summers of 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1999. Diagnostic artifacts and dates on surface faunal material suggest the presence of two archaeological components: one belonging to the American Paleoarctic tradition, and one to the Arctic Small Tool tradition. Artifacts and faunal material suggest that the site was used for processing …

About Time: Chronological Variation As Seen In The Burial Features At Ipiutak, Point Hope, Jennifer I. Newton May 2002

About Time: Chronological Variation As Seen In The Burial Features At Ipiutak, Point Hope, Jennifer I. Newton

Anthropology

The burials at Ipiutak, Point Hope, Alaska, are best known for their spectacular grave goods and burial practices, considered by the excavators to be suggestive of a 'ghost cult', and more recently to be evidence of social complexity. Collections from the National Museum of Denmark, the American Museum of Natural History, and the University of Alaska Museum are studied and re-inventoried, and burial features on the Ipiutak peninsula are re-mapped. Examination of burial practices reveals four burial types, defined in terms of the structure and organization of associated wood. Differences between burial types and variation in artifact inventories are ascribed …

Division Of Parental Roles In The Monogamous Western Sandpiper, Calidris Mauri, Juliette Aimee Neville May 2002

Division Of Parental Roles In The Monogamous Western Sandpiper, Calidris Mauri, Juliette Aimee Neville

Biological Sciences

I investigated whether male and female Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) contributed equal amounts of parental care during the breeding season, near Nome, AK, USA (64 ̊N) during 1998 and 1999. I repeatedly observed which parent was present at the nest during incubation and which parent tended the brood during the brood care period. Females incubated predominantly at night (18:00-06:00 hr ADT); males incubated predominantly during the day (06:00-18:00 hr ADT). Males spent more time incubating than females (57% vs. 43%, P<0.05). Females deserted their broods on average 5.6 days after hatch, while males tended broods on average 13.0 days after hatch (P<0.001). Nests that hatched earlier in the season received significantly more bi-parental care during the brood care period (P=0.01). Timing of nest initiation had the greatest effect on the division of parental care between sexes for Western Sandpipers.

Alcohol-Affected Offenders: Alaska's Crime Conundrum, Maureen Frances Harwood May 2002

Alcohol-Affected Offenders: Alaska's Crime Conundrum, Maureen Frances Harwood

Arctic and Northern Studies

Offenders with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are being inadequately identified and addressed in Alaska's criminal justice system. Without recognition of the problems associated with FAS (e.g., slow cognitive pacing, language impairments, impaired ability to deal with abstract concepts such as time) the alcohol-affected individual's ability to understand and effectively participate in the criminal justice process is compromised. This thesis examines the challenges that people with FAS and other prenatal alcohol exposure conditions present for Alaska's criminal justice system. Ways of protecting people prenatally exposed to alcohol against poor life outcomes, like trouble with the law are explained. Additionally, I present …

Living The Frontier Myth In The Twenty-First Century, Laurel Beach Tyrrell May 2002

Living The Frontier Myth In The Twenty-First Century, Laurel Beach Tyrrell

Arctic and Northern Studies

On the cusp of the millennium, a small number of people live near the community of Central, Alaska in the heart of the state that calls itself 'The Last Frontier'. On the edge of largely uninhabitated lands this group of people have chosen a way of living consistent with traditional American ideals of self-reliance, independence, solitude, and wilderness. Seeking a place to build a quality life integrating meaning and value, far from crowded situations, they have planted themselves in a wild and natural setting. Their narratives display the influence of the physical environment on their view of themselves, others, and …
