Insects And The Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Paul C. Hammond Jun 2002

Insects And The Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Paul C. Hammond

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The principal plant biomes in Nebraska are briefly reviewed. The relationships of insects, particularly scarab beetles and butterflies, to these biomes are discussed, especially as it relates to their distributions. Human-induced alteration of habitat has significantly influenced the present distributions of both plants and insects relative to their historical distributions at the time of Euro-american colonization of Nebraska in the mid-1800s. Examples of range expansion or contraction are presented for exemplar taxa of scarab beetles and butterflies

Cooling Abolishes Neuronal Network Synchronization In Rat Hippocampal Slices., Sam P Javedan, Robert S Fisher, Hans G Eder, Kris A Smith, Jie Wu Jun 2002

Cooling Abolishes Neuronal Network Synchronization In Rat Hippocampal Slices., Sam P Javedan, Robert S Fisher, Hans G Eder, Kris A Smith, Jie Wu

Neurosurgery

PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether cooling brain tissue from 34 to 21 degrees C could abolish tetany-induced neuronal network synchronization (gamma oscillations) without blocking normal synaptic transmission.

METHODS: Intracellular and extracellular electrodes recorded activity in transverse hippocampal slices (450-500 microm) from Sprague-Dawley male rats, maintained in an air-fluid interface chamber. Gamma oscillations were evoked by afferent stimulation at 100 Hz for 200 ms. Baseline temperature in the recording chamber was 34 degrees C, reduced to 21 degrees C within 20 min.

RESULTS: Suprathreshold tetanic stimuli evoked membrane potential oscillations in the 40-Hz frequency range (n = 21). Gamma oscillations …

Teff: A New Annual Forage Grass For South Dakota?, Edward K. Twidwell, Arvid Boe, David P. Casper

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Teff (Eragrostis tef Zucc. Trotter) is a major cereal crop in Ethiopia and has been grown in other African countries as a hay crop. Teff is a warm-season, annual grass that has rapid seed germination and seedling development. It also is well adapted to dry climates. These qualities indicate that teff could be used in this region of the U.S. as a supplemental forage during periods when other forage supplies are diminished. In South Dakota, late summer is when forage supplies are typically low. Teff has been marketed recently in South Dakota under the name “Dessie Summer Lovegrass.” This marketing …

Wheat Scab, Dale J. Gallenberg Jun 2002

Wheat Scab, Dale J. Gallenberg

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Scab, also known as head blight, head scab or pink mold, is a fungal disease which can attack spring and winter wheat as well as other small grains. It is generally most serious under wet or humid weather conditions, such as that experienced in South Dakota and the upper Great Plains in 1993. Scab was observed in some winter wheat fields and was particularly severe in spring wheat and some barley fields.

Personal Pesticide Protection - Coveralls And Aprons, Cooperative Extension Service Jun 2002

Personal Pesticide Protection - Coveralls And Aprons, Cooperative Extension Service

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Pesticide labels under the federal Worker Protection Standard (WPS) may require coveralls for people working with pesticides or near areas treated with them. One- or two-piece coveralls provide an extra layer of protection and can reduce skin exposure to pesticides. Although a variety of protective coveralls are available in local stores or by mail, few companies provide information about resistance of their materials to agricultural chemicals. Remember that coveralls cannot offer complete protection and that no one material is effective in all situations. Wearing coveralls over regular work clothes and underwear can reduce the amount of pesticides that get onto …

Death As Deterrent Or Prosecutorial Tool? Examining The Impact Of Louisiana’S Child Rape Law, Angela Crews Jun 2002

Death As Deterrent Or Prosecutorial Tool? Examining The Impact Of Louisiana’S Child Rape Law, Angela Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This project measures the impact of a 1995 amendment to Louisiana’s aggravated rape statute that allows juries to consider imposing the death penalty for convicted child rapists. Preamendment populations of cases from two large parishes (counties) were compared to postamendment populations of cases. In addition, 40 individual case files were randomly selected and reviewed. Variables measuring certainty, severity, and swiftness of punishment were compared. The only significant change was the reduction of trials, which may be linked to an increased propensity for plea agreements, dismissals, and charge reductions. In general, offenders initially charged with aggravated rape of a child seemed …

Muir Center Newsletters (1981-2015)

o NEWSLETTER John Muir's Aunt Mary by Roberta M. McDow ost people acquainted with the life of John Muir are probably aware that his father Daniel and Daniel's sister Mary were orphans. In 1885, John wrote in his obituary for his father: His mother was English, his father Scotch and he was born in Manchester, England in the year 1804. When he was only six months old his mother died and he lost his father also a few months later when an elder sister became a mother to him and brought him up on a farm that belonged to a …
