Reproductive Experience And Aging : Possible Neuroprotective Effects Of Motherhood, Jessica Dawn Gatewood Aug 2002

Reproductive Experience And Aging : Possible Neuroprotective Effects Of Motherhood, Jessica Dawn Gatewood

Master's Theses

Hormonal fluctuations associated with pregnancy and post partum periods create significant changes in the brain and behavior in female rats. Animals were tested in a land version of the Morris Water maze for three days at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. At the ages of 12, 18, and 24 months animals were also tested in the same maze using a reversal task. At the conclusion of the study brains were analyzed for Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) to determine the amount of neurodegeneration among the groups. Multiparous animals showed significantly superior performance , followed by primiparous animals, and nulliparous animals …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Following primary ocular infection, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) establishes a lifelong latent infection in sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglia. Latency-associated transcript (LAT), the only known viral gene abundantly transcribed during HSV-1 neuronal latency, is required for high levels of reactivation. Recently we showed that three different mutants that do not alter the LAT promoter but contain deletions within the 5′ end of the primary LAT transcript affect viral virulence (G. C. Perng et al., J. Virol. 75:9018-9028, 2001). In contrast, in LAT-null mutants viral virulence appears unaltered (T. M. Block et al., Virology 192:618-630, 1993; D. C. …

Perception Of Interpersonal Behaviors Across Cultures, John Adamopoulos Aug 2002

Perception Of Interpersonal Behaviors Across Cultures, John Adamopoulos

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Cross-cultural psychology has played a very important role in identifying, describing, and even explaining psychological structures that are involved in the perception of interpersonal behavior. This chapter reviews work based on the research paradigm of subjective culture, which establishes that at least three interpersonal dimensions have been identified across cultures and historical periods: Association-Dissociation, Superordination-Subordination, and Intimacy-Formality. These three dimensions are often conceptualized as psychological universals, a notion that raises the question of the origins of the dimensions. By starting with the fundamental assumption that all social behavior is based on resource exchange, the chapter reviews a framework that attempts …

Cultural Variations In Parental Support Of Children's Play, Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler Aug 2002

Cultural Variations In Parental Support Of Children's Play, Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

The purpose of this reading is to highlight the importance of play for children's development and to examine the role of parents in supporting children's play in various cultures. Although play is believed to be universal, the amount of attention devoted to play in a particular society depends in part on the cultural beliefs about the nature of childhood, and on the adults' specific goals for their young children. Researchers have found that some parents consider themselves appropriate social partners for their young children, but in many communities it is older siblings and peers who are the children's primary play …

Effect Of Dietary Protein On Plasma Uric Acid, Body Weight, And Oxidative Stress In Broilers, Maribel Machin Aug 2002

Effect Of Dietary Protein On Plasma Uric Acid, Body Weight, And Oxidative Stress In Broilers, Maribel Machin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Uric acid is an important antioxidant due to its role as a free radical scavenger, and methods to elevate its plasma concentration may be important in animal health. In a preliminary study, the effect of dietary protein on plasma uric acid (PUA) was determined in 3-wk-old chicks. Twenty-four broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 4 diets: low protein (LP) containing 10% casein, medium protein (MP) containing 20% casein, high protein (HP) containing 45% casein and a commercial diet (COD) for 2-wks. PUA concentration increased in chicks fed HP diet and declined in chicks fed LP. In the principal study, PUA …

Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Arcobacter Butzleri In Groundwater Microcosms, Robert Darrell Mcelwain Aug 2002

Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Arcobacter Butzleri In Groundwater Microcosms, Robert Darrell Mcelwain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Arcobacter butzleri may be an etiological agent of gastroenteritis. However, relatively little is known about the persistence and ecology of this genus, particularly in groundwater. In laboratory studies it was determined that the survival of A. butzleri in groundwater can exceed that of the traditional indicator organism, Escherichia coli. An inverse relationship between survival and water temperature was observed for both organisms, but the persistence of A. butzleri exceeded that of E. coli at 5, 15, and 25°C. Selective media for the isolation of Arcobacter spp., while sensitive enough to recover stressed cells, proved ineffective at reducing background flora. Only …

Empowering Students Through Community Action, Natasha Diane Yanez Aug 2002

Empowering Students Through Community Action, Natasha Diane Yanez

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Service Learning is a pedagogy in which the student must participate directly in a service-oriented project, which addresses a real community need. This study focused on the effect of service learning in the curriculum. Research was conducted over service learning, its implementation, and its effects. In addition, the study looks at how one junior high school implemented service learning into their curriculum and the difficulties involved in creating a more intense program.

It was discovered that service learning was often not integrated into the curriculum as expected, teachers often did not require students to reflect on their experiences, and teachers …

A Regional Gis-Based Analysis Of Elk Habitat Suitability In Northwestern Nebraska, Justin W. Fischer

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The need to accurately assess the use and suitability of elk (Cervus elaphus spp.) habitat at regional scales will continue to increase as human development encroaches into what was once optimum elk habitat. The objectives of this research were to calculate the relative proportions of habitat use by elk in the Pine Ridge region of Northwestern Nebraska from a set of radio-collared elk locations and generate a habitat suitability model. Habitat variables (Iandcover type, aspect, slope, distance to a road, road density, and distance from the ponderosa pine edge) were measured for each elk location (n = 5,787 dating …

Feeding Corn Distiller's Co-Products To Beef Cattle, Kent Tjardes Aug 2002

Feeding Corn Distiller's Co-Products To Beef Cattle, Kent Tjardes

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The ethanol industry is currently in the midst of a considerable expansion period in South Dakota and surrounding states. As more ethanol plants are built and begin production, the availability of co-products for livestock feed will increase dramatically. Co-products may offer the cattle industry a tremendous opportunity to reduce feed costs without sacrificing performance. However, there are significant challenges that must be met before feeding these products. The majority of the new plants utilize a dry milling process to produce ethanol from corn. Dry milling (mash distillation) involves cleaning and grinding the grain into coarse flour. Then water and enzymes …

Why Religious People Believe What They Shouldn't: Explaining Theological Incorrectness In South Asia And America, D. Jason Slone Aug 2002

Why Religious People Believe What They Shouldn't: Explaining Theological Incorrectness In South Asia And America, D. Jason Slone

Dissertations

Cross-cultural descriptions of religious thought and behavior in South Asia and America show that people commonly hold ideas and perform actions that seem to be not only conceptually incoherent but also “theologically incorrect” by the standards of their own traditions. For example. South Asian Theravada Buddhists are taught that the historical Buddha is unavailable because he attained enlightenment and achieved parinirvana (“complete extinction”) and yet conceptually and ritually represent him as if he is present and available for petition. Similarly, American Protestants represent the Christian God as having absolute divine sovereignty and yet reveal confidence in an inner locus of …

Why Is There Still Racism If There Is No Such Thing As "Race"?, Marshall H. Segall Aug 2002

Why Is There Still Racism If There Is No Such Thing As "Race"?, Marshall H. Segall

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This presidential address is keyed to the exhibition "All of Us Are Related, Each of Us Is Unique." It reveals that there are no biological barriers between the 5.7 billion human beings that today inhabit the earth. We all have the same ancestors and the genetic diversity of contemporary human populations reflects the paths followed by our ancestors in the course of human migrations over the past 100,000 years. I assert that there is simply no such thing as "white people", "black people", "yellow people", or the like, except as social constructs. In a world in which intergroup hostility has …

Visual Execution Analysis For Multiagent Systems, Chong Kil Aug 2002

Visual Execution Analysis For Multiagent Systems, Chong Kil

Theses and Dissertations

Multiagent systems have become increasingly important in developing complex software systems. Multiagent systems introduce collective intelligence and provide benefits such as flexibility, scalability, decentralization, and increased reliability. A software agent is a high-level software abstraction that is capable of performing given tasks in an environment without human intervention. Although multiagent systems provide a convenient and powerful way to organize complex software systems, developing such system is very complicated. To help manage this complexity this research develops a methodology and technique for analyzing, monitoring and troubleshooting multiagent systems execution. This is accomplished by visualizing a multiagent system at multiple levels of …

Optimisation Of Bile Production During Normothermic Preservation Of Porcine Livers., Charles J. Imber, Shawn D. St Peter, Inigo Lopez De Cenarruzabeitia, Hugh Lemonde, Mike Rees, Andrew Butler, Peter T. Clayton, Peter J. Friend

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Machine perfusion of livers may provide a mechanism for extended preservation of marginal donor organs before transplantation, as well as a method for viability assessment. It has proved possible in a series of experimental porcine liver perfusions to maintain liver viability for up to 72 h. However, a reduction in bile production with associated histological evidence of cholestasis was seen after 10 h of perfusion, damaging the biliary canaliculi during the preservation period and leaving these organs in an unacceptable condition for transplantation. It was proposed that reduction in bile production was the result of a relentless depletion of available …
