Reid’S Foundation For The Primary/Secondary Quality Distinction, Jennifer Mckitrick Oct 2002

Reid’S Foundation For The Primary/Secondary Quality Distinction, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Thomas Reid (1710-1796) offers an under-appreciated account of the primary/secondary quality distinction. He gives sound reasons for rejecting the views of Locke, Boyle, Galileo and others, and presents a better alternative, according to which the distinction is epistemic rather than metaphysical. Primary qualities, for Reid, are qualities whose intrinsic natures can be known through sensation. Secondary qualities, on the other hand, are unknown causes of sensations. Some may object that Reid’s view is internally inconsistent, or unacceptably relativistic. However, a deeper understanding shows that it is consistent, and relative only to normal humans. To acquire this deeper understanding, one must …

Frequency Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection In Dyspeptic Patients In Libya, Asim S. Bakka, Anis B. El-Gariani, Fouzi M. Aboughrara, Barik A. Salih

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori infection is a very common infection worldwide particularly in the developing countries. The organism plays an important role in peptic ulcer diseases. The aim of the study was to detect and correlate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori with such diseases and to evaluate the histopathological grading of gastritis. METHODS: One hundred thirty two patients of 15-83 years of age (average 38) attending the endoscopy unit at the El-Jamahiria Hospital, Binghazi, Libya, mainly complaining from epigastric pain were randomly selected. Three antral biopsies for rapid urease test, direct smear stain and histology together with serum samples were obtained …

Redescriptions Of Haemonchus Mitchelli And Haemonchus Okapiae (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) And Description Of A Unique Synlophe For The Haemonchinae, J. Ralph Lichtenfels, Patricia A. Pilitt, Lynda M. Gibbons, Eric P. Hoberg Oct 2002

Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In the course of a revision of Haemonchus Cobb, 1898 (Nematoda), commonly referred to as large stomach worms, significant new morphological information was discovered that allows the recognition of two species believed for more than 50 years to be synonymous. Both species, Haemonchus mitchelli Le Roux, 1929, from the eland Taurotragus oryx and other African ruminants and H. okapiae van den Berghe, 1937, from the okapi Okapia johnstoni, have a synlophe of 42 ridges, but the synlophe of H. mitchelli is longer than that of H. okapiae. The distal tip of the left spicule of H. mitchelli bears …

Mobile Information Systems – Research Directions On The Conceptual And Logical Level, J. Krogstie, K. Lyytinen, A. Opdahl, B. Pernici, Keng Siau, K. Smolander

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper discusses new challenges and possible approaches for developing and evolving mobile information systems, with focus on model-based approaches on the conceptual and logical level. We have experienced these new challenges through several research and industrial projects on mobile solutions, usability and model-based approaches over the last years. We summarize the main challenges on how model-based approaches can support the development of mobile information systems that are to be used together with other types of systems, primarily in a professional setting and indicate upcoming research issues in this very dynamic area. We argue that this research area is also …

Pasture Condition Guides For The Pilbara, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell Oct 2002

Pasture Condition Guides For The Pilbara, A L. Payne, A A. Mitchell

Agriculture reports

These pasture condition guides are relevant to about 192 000 square kilometres of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The rangeland of the Pilbara can be separated into 12 very broad pasture types. The ‘pasture type’ is not strictly a botanical classification because, in determining such a class of pastoral lands, the perennial plant species that contribute to stock production have an over-riding importance. Even so, each pasture type represents a broad group of similar vegetation associations or ‘site types’ which will have similar management requirements for pastoralism. The aim of this publication is to provide pastoralists with descriptions and …

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Vector Plasmid Dna Elicits An Antitumor Effect, L. Heller, D. Coppola Oct 2002

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Vector Plasmid Dna Elicits An Antitumor Effect, L. Heller, D. Coppola

Bioelectrics Publications

In vivo electroporation is an efficient means of increasing plasmid DNA delivery to normal tissues, such as skin and muscle, as well as directly to tumors. In the experiments described here, plasmid DNA was delivered by in vivo electroporation to B16 mouse melanomas using two very different pulsing protocols. Reporter expression increased 21- or 42-fold, respectively with electroporation over injection alone. The growth of experimental melanomas with an approximate diameter of 4 mm on the day of treatment was monitored after electroporation delivery of reporter plasmid DNA. Remarkably, short-term complete regressions using one of these pulsing protocols occurred in up …

Real-Time In Vivo Imaging Of Platelets, Tissue Factor And Fibrin During Arterial Thrombus Formation In The Mouse, Shahrokh Falati, Peter Gross, Glenn Merrill-Skoloff, Barbara C. Furie, Bruce Furie Oct 2002

Real-Time In Vivo Imaging Of Platelets, Tissue Factor And Fibrin During Arterial Thrombus Formation In The Mouse, Shahrokh Falati, Peter Gross, Glenn Merrill-Skoloff, Barbara C. Furie, Bruce Furie

Articles & Chapters

We have used confocal and widefield microscopy to image thrombus formation in real time in the microcirculation of a living mouse. This system provides high-speed, near-simultaneous acquisition of images of multiple fluorescent probes and of a brightfield channel. Vascular injury is induced with a laser focused through the microscope optics. We observed platelet deposition, tissue factor accumulation and fibrin generation after laser-induced endothelial injury in a single developing thrombus. The initiation of blood coagulation in vivo entailed the initial accumulation of tissue factor on the upstream and thrombus–vessel wall interface of the developing thrombus. Subsequently tissue factor was associated with …

Legal Orientalism, Teemu Ruskola Oct 2002

Legal Orientalism, Teemu Ruskola

Michigan Law Review

Fifty years ago comparative law was a field in search of a paradigm. In the inaugural issue of the American Journal of Comparative Law in 1952, Myres McDougal remarked unhappily, "The greatest confusion continues to prevail about what is being compared, about the purposes of comparison, and about appropriate techniques." In short, there seemed to be very little in the field that was not in a state of confusion. Two decades later, referring to McDougal's bleak assessment, John Merryman saw no evidence of progress: "few comparative lawyers would suggest that matters have since improved." And only a few years ago, …

Truth Vs. Justice: Promoting The Rule Of Law In Post-Apartheid South Africa., Cassandra Fox Charles Oct 2002

Truth Vs. Justice: Promoting The Rule Of Law In Post-Apartheid South Africa., Cassandra Fox Charles

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Strict adherence to the rule of law provides the strongest protections against gross human rights violations. The aftermath of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC, demonstrates how few protections exist without the rule of law. By exchanging truth for justice, the Commission harmed, and continues to harm, the true victims of apartheid and failed to achieve the national unity and reconciliation promised. Truthful confessions based on voluntary disclosure cannot equalize the overarching systematic disparities required for reconciliation to take root and grow. Instead of amnesty in exchange for voluntary disclosure, South Africa should follow the traditional notions of justice …

Mapping Intramuscular Tenderness Variation In Four Major Muscles Of The Beef Round, B.J. Reuter, D.M. Wulf, R.J. Maddock

Animal Science Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to quantify intramuscular tenderness variation within four muscles from the beef round: biceps femoris (BF), semitendinosus (ST), semimembranosus (SM), and adductor (AD). At 48 h postmortem, the BF, ST, SM, and AD were dissected from either the left or right side of ten carcasses, vacuum packaged, and aged for an additional 8 d. Each muscle was then frozen and cut into 2.54- cm-thick steaks perpendicular to the long axis of the muscle. Steaks were broiled on electric broilers to an internal temperature of 71°C. Location-specific cores were obtained from each cooked steak, and Warner- …

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood Oct 2002

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Companies in the biotechnology industry face major challenges in developing and commercializing new products. Focusing on publicly traded biotechnology firms that are not members of university incubators or research parks, this paper argues that the links these companies develop with universities can have beneficial effects on a company's operations. Analysis of 2457 alliances undertaken by 147 biotechnology firms shows that companies with university linkages have lower research and development (R&D) expenses while having higher levels of innovative output. However, the results do not support the proposition that companies with university linkages achieve higher financial performance than similar firms without such …

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith Oct 2002

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article proposes a new theory to unify the law of fiduciary duty. The prevailing view holds that fiduciary law is atomistic, arising for varied reasons in established categories of cases (such as trustee-beneficiary and director-shareholder) and ad hoc in relation- ships where one person trusts another and becomes vulnerable to harm as a result. By contrast, the critical resource theory of fiduciary duty holds that every relationship properly designated as "fiduciary" conforms to the following pattern: One party (the "fiduciary') acts on behalf of another party (the "beneficiary') while exercising discretion with respect to a critical resource belonging to …

The Stumbling Block: Freedom, Rationality, And Legal Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder Oct 2002

The Stumbling Block: Freedom, Rationality, And Legal Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The article critiques the dominance of policy-oriented legal scholarship, particularly in law and economics, arguing that it oversimplifies human behavior by focusing on predictable, instrumental rationality. It advocates for a more balanced approach that incorporates jurisprudential, theoretical, and doctrinal scholarship, drawing on speculative theory from Continental philosophy and psychoanalysis to provide a richer understanding of rationality and human subjectivity. The author suggests that critical legal scholarship could be revitalized by engaging with thinkers like Kant, Hegel, and Lacan, who offer deeper insights into freedom, spontaneity, and the symbolic order.
