Mapping Intramuscular Tenderness Variation In Four Major Muscles Of The Beef Round, B.J. Reuter, D.M. Wulf, R.J. Maddock Oct 2002

Mapping Intramuscular Tenderness Variation In Four Major Muscles Of The Beef Round, B.J. Reuter, D.M. Wulf, R.J. Maddock

Animal Science Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to quantify intramuscular tenderness variation within four muscles from the beef round: biceps femoris (BF), semitendinosus (ST), semimembranosus (SM), and adductor (AD). At 48 h postmortem, the BF, ST, SM, and AD were dissected from either the left or right side of ten carcasses, vacuum packaged, and aged for an additional 8 d. Each muscle was then frozen and cut into 2.54- cm-thick steaks perpendicular to the long axis of the muscle. Steaks were broiled on electric broilers to an internal temperature of 71°C. Location-specific cores were obtained from each cooked steak, and Warner- …

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood Oct 2002

The Effects Of Business-University Alliances On Innovative Output And Financial Performance: A Study Of Publicly Traded Biotechnology Companies, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, D. Robley Wood

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Companies in the biotechnology industry face major challenges in developing and commercializing new products. Focusing on publicly traded biotechnology firms that are not members of university incubators or research parks, this paper argues that the links these companies develop with universities can have beneficial effects on a company's operations. Analysis of 2457 alliances undertaken by 147 biotechnology firms shows that companies with university linkages have lower research and development (R&D) expenses while having higher levels of innovative output. However, the results do not support the proposition that companies with university linkages achieve higher financial performance than similar firms without such …

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith Oct 2002

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith

Vanderbilt Law Review

This Article proposes a new theory to unify the law of fiduciary duty. The prevailing view holds that fiduciary law is atomistic, arising for varied reasons in established categories of cases (such as trustee-beneficiary and director-shareholder) and ad hoc in relation- ships where one person trusts another and becomes vulnerable to harm as a result. By contrast, the critical resource theory of fiduciary duty holds that every relationship properly designated as "fiduciary" conforms to the following pattern: One party (the "fiduciary') acts on behalf of another party (the "beneficiary') while exercising discretion with respect to a critical resource belonging to …

Visualisation Of Synchronous Firing In Multi-Dimensional Spike Trains, L Stuart, M Walter, R Borisyuk Oct 2002

Visualisation Of Synchronous Firing In Multi-Dimensional Spike Trains, L Stuart, M Walter, R Borisyuk

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The gravity transform algorithm is used to study the dependencies in firing of multi-dimensional spike trains. The pros and cons of this algorithm are discussed and the necessity for improved representation of output data is demonstrated. Parallel coordinates are introduced to visualise the results of the gravity transform and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the quantity of data represented whilst minimising loss of information.

Evaluation Of 70/30 D,L-Pla For Use As A Resorbable Interbody Fusion Cage, Jeffrey M. Toth, Mei Wang, Jeffrey L. Scifert, G. Bryan Cornwall, Bradley T. Estes, Howard Seim, Simon Turner Oct 2002

Evaluation Of 70/30 D,L-Pla For Use As A Resorbable Interbody Fusion Cage, Jeffrey M. Toth, Mei Wang, Jeffrey L. Scifert, G. Bryan Cornwall, Bradley T. Estes, Howard Seim, Simon Turner

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Titanium lumbar interbody spinal fusion devices are reported to be 90% effective for single-level lumbar interbody fusion, although radiographic determination of fusion has been debated. Using blinded radiographic, biomechanic, histologic, and statistical measures, researchers in the present study evaluated a radiolucent 70/30 poly(L-lactide-co-D,L-lactide) (70/30 D,L-PLa) interbody fusion device packed with autograft or rhBMP-2 on a collagen sponge in 25 sheep at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. A trend of increased fusion stiffness, radiographic fusion, and histologic fusion was demonstrated from 3 months to 24 months. Device degradation was associated with a mild to moderate chronic inflammatory response at …

Basic Botany On-Line: A Training Tool For The Master Gardener Program, Ann Marie Vanderzanden, Bob Rost, Rick Eckel Oct 2002

Basic Botany On-Line: A Training Tool For The Master Gardener Program, Ann Marie Vanderzanden, Bob Rost, Rick Eckel

Journal of Extension

A team of educators and Web designers at Oregon State University developed a non-credit, on-line training module for the Oregon Master Gardener program. The project goal was to increase accessibility to the Master Gardener program and is the first step in developing similar modules for other topics covered in the Master Gardener training. The 48 Master Gardener participants felt the module was a useful training tool. They also noted that the convenience of completing the material at their own pace and during a time that fit into their schedule made this type of training tool useful to them.

4-H Animal Care As Therapy For At-Risk Youth, Randy R. Weigel, Brenda Caiola, Lise Pittman-Foy Oct 2002

4-H Animal Care As Therapy For At-Risk Youth, Randy R. Weigel, Brenda Caiola, Lise Pittman-Foy

Journal of Extension

Encouraging nurturing traits through the interaction of animals and at-risk youth can help reduce antisocial behavior. A 4-H animal-care program was initiated at The Wyoming Girls School as part of the rehabilitation process for the School's residents. Self-assessments by the young women indicated that the animals served a therapeutic role. Supervised interaction between at-risk youth and animals can provide an avenue to enhance self-esteem and build positive coping behaviors.

The Stumbling Block: Freedom, Rationality, And Legal Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder Oct 2002

The Stumbling Block: Freedom, Rationality, And Legal Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The article critiques the dominance of policy-oriented legal scholarship, particularly in law and economics, arguing that it oversimplifies human behavior by focusing on predictable, instrumental rationality. It advocates for a more balanced approach that incorporates jurisprudential, theoretical, and doctrinal scholarship, drawing on speculative theory from Continental philosophy and psychoanalysis to provide a richer understanding of rationality and human subjectivity. The author suggests that critical legal scholarship could be revitalized by engaging with thinkers like Kant, Hegel, and Lacan, who offer deeper insights into freedom, spontaneity, and the symbolic order.

I Am/Was The Walrus, Daniel Beller-Mckenna Sep 2002

I Am/Was The Walrus, Daniel Beller-Mckenna

Faculty Publications

For most of his adult life, John Lennon fought to define himself against his public identity as "Beatle-:John." That image, crafted by the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein and the pop music industry became a burden to all four of the Beatles during the group's seven years of international star-dom. In place of the rough leather-clad rock and roll band that played rambling one hour sets in the Hamburg Kaiserkeller and the Liverpool Cavern Club during 1960-61, Epstein forged a more commercially viable group of four well (and uniformly) dressed young men whose stage act was reduced to twenty minute carefully …
