From Petro To Agro: Seeds Of A New Economy, Robert E. Armstrong
From Petro To Agro: Seeds Of A New Economy, Robert E. Armstrong
Defense Horizons
Winston Churchill is said to have stopped predicting future events because the future was just “one damned thing after another.” Nonetheless, we need to keep an eye on the future and speculate as to what the next damned thing might be. One candidate is the changing raw material base for the economy.
Today, the hydrocarbon molecule is the basic unit of commerce. In a biobased economy, genes will replace petroleum. So, just as we currently demand assured access to sources of hydrocarbon molecules (oil), in the near future we will demand assured access to a broad-based, diverse supply of genes …
Brain Uptake, Retention, And Efflux Of Aluminum And Manganese, Robert A. Yokel
Brain Uptake, Retention, And Efflux Of Aluminum And Manganese, Robert A. Yokel
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
My colleagues and I investigated the sites and mechanisms of aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) distribution through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Microdialysis was used to sample non-protein-bound Al in the extracellular fluid (ECF) of blood (plasma) and brain. Brain ECF Al appearance after intravenous Al citrate injection was too rapid to attribute to diffusion or to transferrin-receptor-mediated endocytosis, suggesting another carrier-mediated process. The brain:blood ECF Al concentration ratio was 0.15 at constant blood and brain ECF Al concentrations, suggesting carrier-mediated brain Al efflux. Pharmacological manipulations suggested the efflux carrier might be a monocarboxylate transporter (MCT). However, the lack of Al …

Who's Talking? Disentangling Government And Private Speech, Leslie Gielow Jacobs
Who's Talking? Disentangling Government And Private Speech, Leslie Gielow Jacobs
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Several different constitutional rules apply to government actions that influence the content of speech. The government has far more discretion to determine speech content when the government itself is the speaker than when it regulates private speakers. Specifically, in the former circumstance, the government can discriminate according to viewpoint, whereas in the latter circumstance it cannot. While the application of the rules may be obvious when either the government or private entities speak alone, increasingly, through various different types of interactions, government and private groups or individuals are speaking together. This circumstance complicates the crucial constitutional determination, which is: who's …

Prevalence And Characterization Of Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli On Carcasses In Commercial Beef Cattle Processing Plants, Terrance M. Arthur, Genevieve A. Barkocy-Gallagher, Mildred Rivera-Betancourt, Mohammad Koohmaraie
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Beef carcass sponge samples collected from July to August 1999 at four large processing plants in the United States were surveyed for the presence of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Twenty-eight (93%) of 30 single-source lots surveyed included at least one sample containing non-O157 STEC. Of 334 carcasses sampled prior to evisceration, 180 (54%) were found to harbor non-O157 STEC. Non-O157 STEC isolates were also recovered from 27 (8%) of 326 carcasses sampled after the application of antimicrobial interventions. Altogether, 361 non-O157 STEC isolates, comprising 41 different O serogroups, were recovered. O serogroups that previously have been associated with …

The State of the Union and Recommendation Clauses of Article II, Section 3provide that the President "shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient. "Those thirty-one words envision the President as the lead active participant in the embryonic stages of the making of laws. Eight separate principles animate the President's legislative duties and powers before the presentment process. When the State of the Union and Recommendation Clauses are seen to have this textual and analytical subtlety, they reveal …
