Cinema And Theology: The Case Of Heaven Over The Marshes, Bert Cardullo, André Bazin

Journal of Religion & Film

André Bazins impact, as theorist and critic, is widely considered to be greater than that of any single director, actor, or producer, despite his early death (at only 40) of leukemia in 1958. He is credited with almost single-handedly establishing the study of film as an accepted intellectual pursuit, as well as with being the spiritual father of the French New Wave. In 1951 Bazin co-founded and became editor-in-chief of Cahiers du cinéma, the single most influential critical periodical in the history of the cinema. Bazin can also be considered the principal instigator of the equally influential auteur theory: the …

Incentives Toward Conservation Of Argaii Ovis Ammon: A Case Study Of Trophy Hunting In Western China, R. B. Harris, Dan H. Pletscher Oct 2002

Incentives Toward Conservation Of Argaii Ovis Ammon: A Case Study Of Trophy Hunting In Western China, R. B. Harris, Dan H. Pletscher

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

We investigated management of wildlife, habitat and the hunting programme in Aksai County, Gansu Province, People's Republic of China, during 1997-2000. Argali Ovis amnion is the focal species both for conservation and hunting. The hunting programme is intended to produce incentives to conserve wildlife and habitat. Poaching, a serious concern throughout western China, has been reduced in recent years in Aksai. Wildlife population trends are unknown because standardized surveys were begun only in 2000. Threats to argali in Aksai include livestock grazing, placer gold mining, and development of a dam, reservoir and aqueduct. The number of hunters participating in the …

Identifying Sources Of Fecal Pollution In The Roanoke River, Roanoke County, Virginia, J. Brooks Crozier, Brian Clark, Holly Weber Oct 2002

Identifying Sources Of Fecal Pollution In The Roanoke River, Roanoke County, Virginia, J. Brooks Crozier, Brian Clark, Holly Weber

Virginia Journal of Science

Antibiotic Resistance Patterns (ARPs) of Enterococcus spp. were used as a phenotypic fingerprint to compare and categorize unknown-source isolates in an impaired segment of the Roanoke River, Roanoke County, Virginia. Antibiotic resistance analysis (ARA) of enterococci has been effectively used to differentiate among sources of fecal contamination in many geographic regions in the United States. Enterococcus spp. were used as a fecal indicator in a library consisting of 1,562 known-source isolates. Two-way analysis indicated that approximately 95% of the unknown-source isolates collected were of animal origin. A 3-way analysis indicated that 61% of the unknowns were of livestock origin while …

Chromium Tolerant Microbial Communities From The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Kristine L. Lowe, Ruth E. Fliflet, Tony Ly, Brenda J. Little, Joanne Jones-Meehan Oct 2002

Chromium Tolerant Microbial Communities From The Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Kristine L. Lowe, Ruth E. Fliflet, Tony Ly, Brenda J. Little, Joanne Jones-Meehan

Virginia Journal of Science

Chromium tolerant bacteria were enumerated from portions of the Chesapeake Bay watershed and examined for their potential to reduce Cr(VI). Water and sediment samples were collected from various locations in Baltimore Harbor and Bear Creek, as well as Sandy Point State Park in Maryland and the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. Samples were spread onto agar plates with CrO42- (5 ppm) as the sole terminal electron acceptor. Plates were incubated anaerobically and colony forming units (CFU) enumerated. CFU arising on minimal-CrO42- medium ranged from 103-104 mL-1 or g-1 and community estimates …

Longevity Record For A Wild Allegheny Woodrat (Neotama Magister) In West Virginia, Michael T. Mengak, Steven B. Castleberry, W. Mark Ford, Nikki L. Castleberry, Jane L. Rodrigue

Virginia Journal of Science

The Allegheny woodrat (Neotoma magister) is found throughout much of the central and southern Appalachians and adjacent portions of the Interior Highlands. Allegheny woodrats have declined in the northern portions of their range and are state-listed as threatened, endangered or sensitive species of concern in every state where they occur. Until recently, biologists have had to rely on biological data collected from the closely related eastern woodrat (N. floridana) because of limited research on the Allegheny woodrat. We have been studying the ecology and natural history of woodrats in Virginia and West Virginia since 1990. On …

Injury-Induced Functional Plasticity In The Peripheral Gustatory System, Susan J. Hendricks, Suzanne I. Sollars, David L. Hill

Combining unilateral denervation of anterior tongue taste buds with a low-sodium diet in rats results in a rapid, dramatic, and selective attenuation of neurophysiological sodium taste responses from the intact side of the tongue. The transduction pathway responsible for the attenuated response is through the epithelial sodium channel (Hill and Phillips, 1994). Current experiments extend these findings by detailing the effects of experimentally induced injury on taste responses from anterior tongue taste receptors in sodium-restricted rats. Experiments focused on functional salt taste responses from the intact chorda tympani nerve in sodium-restricted rats in which a gustatory nerve was sectioned that …

Women And Development In Africa: From Marginalization To Gender Inequality, Fredoline Anunobi Oct 2002

Women And Development In Africa: From Marginalization To Gender Inequality, Fredoline Anunobi

African Social Science Review

This article examines the role of women in economic and political development, attempts made by women to overcome their socio-economic and political underdevelopment and marginalization, and the role of the intemational community in addressing these issues. It begins by arguing that although women play a very important role in development, their status in African countries does not reflect their contributions. Therefore, enhancing this status would not only go a long way toward overcoming population and food production problems, but it would also help boast economic growth and development. The key to accomplishing womens status is to ensure that women have …

The article discusses mandated service-learning and required service-learning in schools in Japan and Maryland.

The State Of American Federalism, 2001–2002: Resilience In Response To Crisis, Dale Krane Oct 2002

The State Of American Federalism, 2001–2002: Resilience In Response To Crisis, Dale Krane

Public Administration Faculty Publications

The past year has been one of repeated shocks to government and the larger society. Terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D. C, the burst of the dot.com bubble in the stock market, a wave of corporate scandals, and a slowdown in the economy posed severe problems for officials of all governments in the federal system. The combined effects of the war on terrorism and the economic turmoil forced federal policymakers to create new agencies and to enact new policies. Slate and local governments also responded to the multiple shocks with a variety of initiatives, often independent of …

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok Oct 2002

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

New trap designs for tsetse (Glossinidae), stable flies (Muscidae: Stomoxyinae), and horse flies (Tabanidae) were tested in Kenya to develop a multipurpose trap for biting flies. Many configurations and colour/fabric combinations were compared to a simplified, blue-black triangular trap to identify features of design and materials that result in equitable catches. New designs were tested against conventional traps, with a focus on Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, Stomoxys niger Macquart, and Atylotus agrestis (Wiedemann). A simple design based on minimal blue and black rectangular panels, for attraction and contrast, with a trap body consisting of an innovative configuration …
