It is well recognized that host-specialized folivores prefer to feed on young in comparison to old leaves. However, the capacity of young leaf feeders to track specific leaf developmental stages has not been clearly demonstrated. Using three insect folivores and two plant species, we show that nitrogen (N) fertilization changes leaf development and that herbivores track these changes in leaf development. Nicotiana tabacum L. and Populus deltoides Bartram were fertilized at two and three rates of N addition, respectively. Plants with high rates of N supply had faster growth, greater leaf area, and faster leaf initiation rates than plants receiving …

This Article argues that judicial deference to the military, at least as the principle is understood in contemporary decisions of the Court, is surprisingly recent and not at all constitutionally established. In fact, this deference departs from constitutional text and from a line of Supreme Court precedent concerning civilian-military relations extending back before the Civil War. Broad judicial deference to military discretion is only a creation of the post-Vietnam, all-volunteer military and, more specifically, only a creation of one single Justice of the Supreme Court, William H. Rehnquist.

Left Cardiac Sympathetic Denervation Via Thoracoscope To Treat Long Qt Syndrome, Dayi Hu, Cuilan Li, Jun Wang, Lexin Wang
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Purpose: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a cardiovascular disorder characterized by prolongation of the QT interval on ECG and presence of syncope, seizures, and sudden cardiac death. The therapy for LQTS is mainly dependent on medicines. The aim of the present study was to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a new surgical method of cardiac sympathectomy for LQTS patients.
Methods: Left cardiac sympathetic denervation (LCSD) were conducted on 4 LQTS patients who were resistant to β-blockers. Patients' ECG and clinical symptoms were assessed before and after the surgery.
Results: LCSD was successful in all patients. QTc decreased from 0.54±0.08 …

Over the past year, all of us have come to a deeper appreciation of human relationships. When I wrote this column one year ago, none of us, of course, could have imagined what would transpire just days later. September 11 brought warlike conditions to our own country. Our campus reacted with shock, grief, courage, and resolve. Students, faculty, and staff joined hands in prayer for the victims, their families, and the future of the world. They wrote expressions of sorrow and love on banners. They built replicas of the World Trade Center’s twin towers using canned food, which was lovingly …
The Socio-Legal Acceptance Of New Technologies: A Close Look At Artificial Insemination, Gaia Bernstein
The Socio-Legal Acceptance Of New Technologies: A Close Look At Artificial Insemination, Gaia Bernstein
Washington Law Review
Heated debates often surround the introduction of an important new technology into society, as exemplified by current controversies surrounding human cloning and privacy protection on the Internet. Underlying these controversies are disruptions to central socio-legal values caused by these new technologies. Whether new technologies will eventually be accepted by society is often contingent on the reaction of the legal system. This mandates the formulation of a conceptual framework for understanding and structuring the way the law should react in cases surrounding the adoption of new technologies. By using the case study of artificial insemination this Article develops the tools for …

An Evidence-Based Review Of Dopamine Receptor Agonists In The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease, Dirk Deleu, Margaret G. Northway, Yolande Hanssens
Saudi Medical Journal
Apomorphine and certain ergot alkaloids (bromocriptine, lisuride and pergolide) have been available for several decades; for the last few years, they were joined by newer dopamine agonists (cabergoline, pramipexole and ropinirole) most of them are non-ergolines. Each of these dopamine agonists has its own pharmacological characteristics and occupies a place in the pharmacotherapy of Parkinsons disease. In this evidence-based review, emphasis is put on the clinical efficacy of dopamine agonists in early and advanced Parkinsons disease, and where possible comparative evidence regarding their efficacy and safety is provided. In addition, their clinical pharmacokinetics, adverse effect profiles and most relevant interactions …

Bowel Anastomosis. A Comparative Study Of Various Surgical Techniques, Abdelkarim A. El-Bakry
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Mechanical suture (stapler) has been in use for bowel anastomosis since the second half of the 20th century, however, it became popular since it was used widely by the United States of America in the late 1960. Since it is more expensive than the conventional method, a local experimental assessment was introduced to compare stapler with conventional methods. METHODS: Eighteen local dogs were used, 36 anastomosis were assessed in the animal house operating theater of King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between October 1998 and March 2000. RESULTS: The weight needed to disrupt the anastomosis was …
