Incest In A Thousdand Acres: Cheap Trick Or Feminist Re-Vision, Susan Ayres Oct 2001

Incest In A Thousdand Acres: Cheap Trick Or Feminist Re-Vision, Susan Ayres

Faculty Scholarship

This article ultimately argues that the plot changes are not a cheap trick intended to manipulate the reader's emotions, but a feminist re-vision, which succeeds or not depending on the reader's critical feminist perspective. Thus, Part Two delineates several feminist stances, such as liberal feminism, radical feminism, social feminism, and postmodern feminism, and summarizes the plot changes Smiley has imposed on King Lear. Part Three considers one major plot change - the longing for the mother - in terms of patriarchy's suppression of a maternal genealogy and feminine language. This part argues that the novel successfully demonstrates the difficulty in …

Harold K. Jacobson (1929-2001): An Appreciation, Charlotte Ku Oct 2001

Harold K. Jacobson (1929-2001): An Appreciation, Charlotte Ku

Faculty Scholarship

Harold Jacobson was born in Detroit onJune 28,1929. He attended high school in Wyandotte, Michigan, and received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Michigan. He married his Michigan schoolmate Merelyn Jean Lindbloom in 1951, a year after he started graduate school at Yale.

He was fundamentally an optimist about human behavior; he opened his path-breaking text, Networks of Interdependence, with the words, "This is an optimistic book, though I hope not an unrealistic one."

Thus did Jacobson begin a career-long association with many whose work was rooted in international law. This interest led to fruitful collaborations and …

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides: Experiment, Marius Ghita, Lee W. Casperson Oct 2001

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides: Experiment, Marius Ghita, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Gaussian beams have been widely used for propagating electromagnetic waves in free space and in certain other optical systems. It has been suggested that recurring forms of such beams might also be useful for propagation in planar or rectangular metal waveguides. Experimental verification of the recurrence of the Gaussian field distribution in metal waveguides is reported here.

Longitudinal Analysis Of Cohesion In Student Work Teams: The Efficacy Of Teamwork Skills Training, Kari Rachel Strobel Oct 2001

Longitudinal Analysis Of Cohesion In Student Work Teams: The Efficacy Of Teamwork Skills Training, Kari Rachel Strobel

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study was a longitudinal examination of the effects of teamwork skills training on team cohesion and team performance. Participants were 11 teams, made up of three-to-five undergraduate students who enrolled in a team-based Industrial/Organizational psychology course. For 16 weeks, each team completed three graded assignments per week and was tracked with regard to levels of task and social cohesion. During the seventh week, teams received theory-based training on basic teamwork processes. Results indicate that the training intervention had a significant positive impact on team cohesion. However, training did not affect team performance levels as expected. Discussion centered on the …

Dynamical Theory For Modeling Dipole-Dipole Interactions In A Microcavity: The Green Dyadic Approach, P.T. Leung, R. L. Hartman Oct 2001

Dynamical Theory For Modeling Dipole-Dipole Interactions In A Microcavity: The Green Dyadic Approach, P.T. Leung, R. L. Hartman

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A dynamical theory for modeling the dipole-dipole interaction in a microcavity is formulated using the Green dyadic approach. To our knowledge, this theory is one of the most general in many aspects of modeling the phenomenon. It accommodates an arbitrary number of layers adjacent to the cavity, constant but arbitrary dielectric properties within each layer, inclusion of retardation effects, arbitrary dipole orientations, and an unlimited number of interacting dipoles. Numerical results for the emission properties of interacting molecular dipoles in a microcavity are presented to illustrate the capability of the method.

Cultural Property And Ownership: Antiquities, Clemency Coggins Oct 2001

Cultural Property And Ownership: Antiquities, Clemency Coggins

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The following are thoughts on the ownership of antiquities or ancient objects from the perspective of an archaeologist. This is an unpleasant exercise since, from my point of view, modem ownership is totally irrelevant to our involvement with the ancient world. Property law, as has just been observed in the introduction, is a kind of cultural product itself. This is an interesting side consideration. Howard Spiegler spoke of the ownership of art and of relatively modem paintings. It is clear this is a very complicated topic, particularly when more than one country and more than one legal system is involved. …

Protecting Debtor's Subsidiaries: Extending The Automatic Stay Of 11 U.S.C. § 362 To Foreign Subsidiaries, William J. Kambas Oct 2001

Protecting Debtor's Subsidiaries: Extending The Automatic Stay Of 11 U.S.C. § 362 To Foreign Subsidiaries, William J. Kambas

Connecticut Journal of International Law

To protect or not to protect... On one hand, a viable business is valuable to society and such a business should be assisted if financial hardship jeopardizes its future.' On the other hand, if a business is unable to cope on its own, it should not be put on life support, and if that business is truly valuable to society another will take its place The United States Bankruptcy Code (the "Code") has taken the kinder, gentler road. Chapter 11 of the Code facilitates the reorganization of viable businesses. Although the reorganization process cannot ensure that a once strong business …

The Emergence Of Mechanisms For Cross-Border Insolvencies In Canadian Law, Sean Dargan Oct 2001

The Emergence Of Mechanisms For Cross-Border Insolvencies In Canadian Law, Sean Dargan

Connecticut Journal of International Law

In 1983, the United States Bankruptcy Court of the Eastern District of Michigan dealt a blow to the generally cordial relations between the United States and Canada when it ignored a petition granted in the Supreme Court of Ontario in Bankruptcy.' In Toga, the U.S. Court denied a Canadian bankruptcy trustee's request for injunction against a U.S. creditor under 11 U.S.C. §304, holding that it was the court's duty to "protect United States citizens' claims against foreign judgments inconsistent with this country's well-defined and accepted policies."' While Toga is usually examined under the lens of §304 of U.S. Chapter 11,3 …

The Transnational Insolvency Project Of The American Law Institute, Jay Lawrence Westbrook Oct 2001

The Transnational Insolvency Project Of The American Law Institute, Jay Lawrence Westbrook

Connecticut Journal of International Law

In May 2000, the American Law Institute (hereinafter "ALI") completed its Transnational Insolvency Project (hereinafter the "TIP") with the membership's approval of Principles of Cooperation in Transnational Insolvency Cases Among the Members of the North American Free Trade Agreement.' The approval marked the end of a unique five-year cooperative effort by experts in bankruptcy law from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The resulting text is an authoritative statement of basic principles (hereinafter the "ALl Principles") for the conduct of multinational bankruptcy cases.

The TIP was important both for its results and for its significance in the life of the …

The Genesis, Structure, And Projection Of The New Mexican Insolvency Law, Luis Manuel C. Mejan Oct 2001

The Genesis, Structure, And Projection Of The New Mexican Insolvency Law, Luis Manuel C. Mejan

Connecticut Journal of International Law

A survey of former Mexican laws reveals antecedents of current laws related to insolvency. The first bankruptcy law, enacted in 1853, followed two models: a French law, enacted in 1802, and a Spanish statute, enacted in 1892. Further, commercial codes, enacted in 1854, 1883, and 1890 (the latter of which is still in effect), had specific chapters on the subject. In 1942, a team chaired by an outstanding lawyer, Mr. Joaquin Rodriguez y Rodriguez, drafted the Bankruptcy Law (Ley de Quiebras y Suspension de Pagos), which was later enacted by Congress. Except for one small amendment, added in 1987, the …

Insolvency Reform And Economic Policy, Sean Hagan Oct 2001

Insolvency Reform And Economic Policy, Sean Hagan

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Insolvency reform seems to be in vogue. Over the past several years, a number of advanced industrial countries have introduced-or are considering introducingsignificant changes in the framework governing the liquidation or rehabilitation of enterprises.' For many emerging market economies, reform in this area has become a central component of their economic reform programs.2 Moreover, in addition to providing financial and technical support for these programs, multilateral financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund ("IMF") and the World Bank are also devoting considerable resources to the distillation of best practices in the area of corporate insolvency.3 Most recently, the United …

Reforming Brazilian Insolvency Law, Gloria Angelica Contu Oct 2001

Reforming Brazilian Insolvency Law, Gloria Angelica Contu

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Brazilian insolvency proceedings are governed by Federal Decree-Law Number 7.661 of 1945,' as amended 2 -which provides for two distinct legal proceedings known as concordata and fal~ncia. Concordata proceedings rehabilitate the debtor through a process of debt restructuring while falncia is a forced judicial liquidation of the debtor's estate.3 Each of these proceedings may significantly impact the recovery rights of domestic or foreign creditors, notwithstanding whether the original credit transaction was negotiated outside of Brazilian jurisdiction.

For an international creditor who is deciding whether or not to lend, and under what financial terms, a fair calculation of recovery risk' will …

A Global Approach For Multi-Creditor Out-Of-Court Restructurings - A New Initiative And The Wider Issues, Terry Bond Oct 2001

A Global Approach For Multi-Creditor Out-Of-Court Restructurings - A New Initiative And The Wider Issues, Terry Bond

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Insolvency regimes differ widely around the world, some can be described as highly developed and sophisticated, based as they are on many hundreds of years of experience, constantly being updated and refined in the light of constant usage and practice. The systems of countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and various European countries would spring to mind as examples. Equally, there are many jurisdictions where the evolution of insolvency systems is much less advanced, ranging down to those where they are largely ineffective, whether through lack of modem commerciality, or because implementation or predictability are lacking, …

Measurements Of C V Flows From Thermal Charge-Exchange Excitation In Divertor Plasmas, B. Zaniol, R. C. Isler, N. H. Brooks, W. P. West, Ronald E. Olson Oct 2001

Measurements Of C V Flows From Thermal Charge-Exchange Excitation In Divertor Plasmas, B. Zaniol, R. C. Isler, N. H. Brooks, W. P. West, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Certain transitions of C IV (C3+) from n=7 to n=6 (≈7226 Å) and from n=6 to n=5 (≈=4660 Å) sometimes appear much brighter in tokamak divertors than expected for electron-impact excitation from the ground state. This situation occurs because of charge exchange between C V (C4+) and recycling thermal deuterium atoms in the n=2 level. As a result, it is possible to extend parallel flow measurements of carbon, which have previously been performed on C II-C IV ions using Doppler shift spectroscopy, to include flows of the He-like C V ions. The work described here includes …
