Weed Plan For Western Australia, State Weed Plan Steering Group, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Oct 2001

Weed Plan For Western Australia, State Weed Plan Steering Group, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

One of the most significant environmental challenges facing Western Australia is the minimisation of the impact of weeds. In the relatively short history of this State since European settlement, some 1155 exotic plant species have established as weeds in our diverse and generally fragile ecosystems. While development for agriculture, mining, transport and housing must by its nature result in some change to the State’s flora, the introduction of weedy plant species has caused serious impacts which cause great concern.

Weeds now pose a serious threat to many of the State’s ecosystems, and impose high annual costs on agricultural industries. Weeds …

The Role Of Lawyers In The World Trade Organization, Peter D. Ehrenhaft Oct 2001

The Role Of Lawyers In The World Trade Organization, Peter D. Ehrenhaft

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The World Trade Organization is a marvelously ambitious effort of now 140 countries to bring the rule of law to international trade. The WTO is a logical extension of the inspired ideas of the draftsmen of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), who recognized at the end of World War II that the seeds of that conflagration were sown, in part, by the chaotic condition of international trade following World War I.

During that inter-war period, the United States adopted its Antidumping Act of 1921 and its Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Both survive to this day. By …

The Influence Of Marvin V. Marvin On Housework During Marriage, Margaret F. Brinig Oct 2001

The Influence Of Marvin V. Marvin On Housework During Marriage, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

When Michelle Marvin was forced to leave the home she shared with what today we would call her partner, Lee Marvin, she had a number of problems. The first ones, of course, were legal: she had no marriage with Lee and no written contract that could distinguish their relationship from "mere cohabitation." Nor had she contributed directly to his career or other assets. What she alleged was his express promise to "take care of her" (for some time period that was not altogether clear) and, less obviously, a promise implied by all she had done with and for him during …

The Costs Of Conflict: The Impact On China Of A Future War, Andrew Scobell Dr. Oct 2001

The Costs Of Conflict: The Impact On China Of A Future War, Andrew Scobell Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

It is increasingly important for Americans to think carefully about the vast complexities of the U.S.-China relationship, and the calculations that go into forming courses of action. The key question is: will China s so-called first priority of economic development and its resulting influence on domestic social stability curtail China s continuing reliance on military force as a means of exerting its influence? In addition, will economic development enhance China s comprehensive national power and thus contribute to some of China s more unhealthy goals, such as dominating the South China Seas, seizing Taiwan by force, or grabbing the Senkaku …

Lnduced Resistance To Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Soybean, P. Srinivas, Stephen D. Danielson, C. Michael Smith, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Induced resistance in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, to the bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), was investigated in greenhouse experiments using the treatments of mechanical injury, a chemical inducer (ActigardrM, Novartis Crop Protection lnc., Greensboro, NC) and defoliation by the bean leaf beetle and the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker). Experiments were conducted on soybean Pl 227687, two soybean cultivars (Colfax and Williams 82) and a soybean germplasm line (HC95-24MB). Dual-choice feeding-preference tests with bean leaf beetle adults were used to assess induced resistance. Adult beetles were collected from soybean fields 2 to 5 d prior to the feeding …

2001 Presidential Address: Do More With More, Dawn O. Braithwaite Oct 2001

2001 Presidential Address: Do More With More, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

As I have listened to, and recently reread the addresses of our WSCA Presidents, I have been moved and challenged by their words and their wisdom. And their speeches are challenging. They have exhorted us to embrace quality discourse, to welcome change, to maintain the centrality of communication in the university of the 21st century, and to avoid becoming out-of-touch whiners. I wondered, what can I add to their words in my own address?

Over this past year, I have thought about my life as a communication professor. How are my times similar and different from those who have come …

Exploring The Emergent Identities Of Future Physicians: Toward An Understanding Of The Ideological Socialization Of Osteopathic Medical Students, Lynn M. Harter, Kathleen J. Krone Oct 2001

Exploring The Emergent Identities Of Future Physicians: Toward An Understanding Of The Ideological Socialization Of Osteopathic Medical Students, Lynn M. Harter, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This project brings contextual factors to the forefront of socialization research by investigating how medical ideology relates to the formation of the identities of students of osteopathic medicine. In particular, we investigate their attitudes toward, the role of communication in, and the expression of emotion in health care delivery. Through in-depth interviews with students about their vocational development experiences, we began exploring their emergent identities as future practitioners of osteopathic medicine. Three themes emerged from a constant comparative analysis of data, including (a) selecting osteopathic medicine, (b) encountering osteopathy, and (c) students’ emergent identities. These themes, and their respective subthemes, …

Island Arcs, Accretionary Terranes And Midcontinent Structure New Understandings Of The Geologic Architecture Of The U.S. Midcontinent, Marvin P. Carlson Oct 2001

Island Arcs, Accretionary Terranes And Midcontinent Structure New Understandings Of The Geologic Architecture Of The U.S. Midcontinent, Marvin P. Carlson

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

A data base collected over the last 100 years, containing both surface and subsurface information, has allowed us to begin to understand the physical framework of Nebraska. We have learned that even in the stable Midcontinent region of North America, there has been an active geologic history. This framework has been deciphered by our programs of surface geologic mapping and by the study of rock samples from both water wells and those deeper test wells for oil and gas. Determining the major structural features across the state (figure 1) has allowed us to better understand both the occurrences of its …

The Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Immediate-Early Protein (Bicp0) Associates With Histone Deacetylase 1 To Activate Transcription, Yange Zhang, Clinton J. Jones Oct 2001

The Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Immediate-Early Protein (Bicp0) Associates With Histone Deacetylase 1 To Activate Transcription, Yange Zhang, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Infected-cell protein 0 encoded by bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) (bICP0) is necessary for efficient productive infection, in large part, because it activates all 3 classes of BHV-1 genes (U. V. Wirth, C. Fraefel, B. Vogt, C. Vlcek, V. Paces, and M. Schwyzer, J. Virol. 66:2763–2772, 1992). Although bICP0 is believed to be a functional homologue of herpes simplex virus type 1-encoded ICP0, the only well-conserved domain between the proteins is a zinc ring finger located near the amino terminus of both proteins. Our previous studies demonstrated that bICP0 is toxic to transfected cells but does not appear to directly induce …

‘Forrest’ Resistance To The Soybean Cyst Nematode Is Bigenic: Saturation Mapping Of The Rhg1 And Rhg4 Loci, K. Meksem, P. Pantazopoulos, V. N. Njiti, D. L. Hyten, P. R. Arelli, D. A. Lightfoot Oct 2001

‘Forrest’ Resistance To The Soybean Cyst Nematode Is Bigenic: Saturation Mapping Of The Rhg1 And Rhg4 Loci, K. Meksem, P. Pantazopoulos, V. N. Njiti, D. L. Hyten, P. R. Arelli, D. A. Lightfoot

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Field resistance to cyst nematode (SCN) race 3 (Heterodera glycines I.) in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cv ‘Forrest’ is conditioned by two QTLs: the underlying genes are presumed to include Rhg1 on linkage group G and Rhg4 on linkage group A2. A population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and two populations of near-isogenic lines (NILs) derived from a cross of Forrest × Essex were used to map the loci affecting resistance to SCN. Bulked segregant analysis, with 512 AFLP primer combinations and microsatellite markers, produced a high-density genetic map for the intervals carrying Rhg …

Physid Snails As Sentinels Of Freshwater Nematomorphs, Ben Hanelt, L. E. Grother, John J. Janovy Jr. Oct 2001

Physid Snails As Sentinels Of Freshwater Nematomorphs, Ben Hanelt, L. E. Grother, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

Freshwater nematomorphs, or gordiids, are parasitic as larvae, but free-living in aquatic environments as adults. Studies based on the collection of adults have reported gordiids to be widespread, but discontinuous in distribution. However, a relatively short adult life span and unknown life history make the detection of adults difficult. An alternative approach to investigate gordiid distribution is to use cysts. Of all paratenic hosts, snails were chosen because they lacked internal defense reactions to the cysts and become easily infected. Here, it is reported that the occurrence of gordiids on the basis of the cyst stage is much more common …

Epimerite-Host Epithelium Relationships Among Eugregarines Parasitizing The Damselflies Enallagma Civile And Ischnura Verticalis, Tamara J. Percival Cook, John J. Janovy Jr., Richard E. Clopton Oct 2001

Epimerite-Host Epithelium Relationships Among Eugregarines Parasitizing The Damselflies Enallagma Civile And Ischnura Verticalis, Tamara J. Percival Cook, John J. Janovy Jr., Richard E. Clopton

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

The host-parasite interface between two species of damselflies and four species of eugregarines was examined at the ultrastructural level. Nubenocephalus nebraskensis organisms attached to the host midgut epithelium by means of a sucker-like protomerite; the space between the epicytic folds and host epithelium was filled with electron-dense material interpreted to be adhesive in nature. Actinocephalus carrilynnae organisms attached by means of the epimerite, which had no epicytic folds, and by the fluted stalk with characteristic epicytic folds; host cell and parasite membranes appeared fused at some places on the epimerite. Hoplorhynchus acanthatholius organisms attached by means of an ovoid epimerite …

Essays On Ecological Classics: Discovering An Effect Of Insect Floral Herbivory On Plant Population Density And Distribution In A "Green World", Svata M. Louda

Svata M. Louda Publications

Could insect herbivory be a significant factor influencing the population density of some native plants? I first asked this question in 1971, and this led me to the research that was acknowledged by the 1982 Mercer Award. The question occurred to me in the context of studying the controversy over trophic structure dynamics (Hairston et al. 1960, Murdoch 1966, Ehrlich and Birch 1967, Slobodkin et al. 1967). At the time, herbivory was not considered an important factor affecting either the abundance or the distribution of plant populations.

In my experiments (1973-1978), I compared seed production and subsequent seedling and juvenile …

Energetics And Cooperativity In Three-Center Hydrogen Bonding Interactions. Ii. Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding Systems, Ruben D. Parra, Bing Gong, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

High level ab initio calculations have been carried out on a number of intramolecular two- and three-center H-bonding structures containing the amide motif, NHC=O. These structures serve as model systems for probing the stability of intramolecular three-center H bonds of the type A1HA2. Particular attention is given to cooperative effects in the three-center H-bonding structures. A systematic assessment of cooperativity for intramolecular H-bonding systems is presented.

The Diagnosis Of Diabetes Mellitus. A Contest Between 3 Points!, Aus A. Alzaid, Samia Sobki Oct 2001

The Diagnosis Of Diabetes Mellitus. A Contest Between 3 Points!, Aus A. Alzaid, Samia Sobki

Saudi Medical Journal

A major debate is currently taking place on the world diabetes scene on the merits of fasting versus 2-hour postprandial glucose concentrations as a reference point for the diagnosis of diabetes. Other time points of the oral glucose tolerance test on the other hand, seem to attract little attention. In Saudi Arabia however, we have been intrigued by the scale and severity of hyperglycemia observed at one-hour following glucose load. Plasma glucose concentration one-hour postprandially is strikingly abnormal amongst native Saudis and interestingly, is associated with insulin resistance and features of syndrome X. Such observations have prompted us to call …
