The treatment consisted of an average of 9 months of antithyroid medication, thyroidectomy or treatment with radioactive iodide. Cure was defined as a patient being euthyroid or hypothyroid for a minimum period of …

Synchronous Endometrioid Carcinoma Of The Ovary And Endometrium Associated With Ovulation Induction, Samir Ghourab Oct 2001

Synchronous Endometrioid Carcinoma Of The Ovary And Endometrium Associated With Ovulation Induction, Samir Ghourab

Saudi Medical Journal

Over the last 2 decades great concern about the possible association between ovarian cancer and ovulation induction has been raised. Between the first reported case in 1982 and the end of year 2000, there have been 44 cases of ovarian carcinoma reported to occur in women previously treated with ovulation induction drugs. Most of these tumors were of the serous type with low malignant potential. In the present case, the patient had secondary anovulatory infertility and previous left cystoophorectomy for ovarian endometrioma. She was treated with human menopausal gonadotrophin alone or in combination with clomiphene citrate for 13 cycles prior …

An Unusual Cervical Swelling In A Child, Ahmed H. Al-Salem Oct 2001

An Unusual Cervical Swelling In A Child, Ahmed H. Al-Salem

Saudi Medical Journal

Congenital thymic cysts are rare benign lesions, frequently seen in the neck and mediastinum, but because of their infrequent occurrence and similarity to other more common cystic swellings, their preoperative diagnosis is not considered. Congenital thymic cysts although rare should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cervical and mediastinal cystic swellings in children. This is a case report of a multilocular cervical thymic cyst in a child.

Monte Carlo Studies Of Mott Scattering Asymmetries From Gold Foils, M. A. Khakoo, D. Roundy, C. Hicks, N. Margolis, E. Yeung, A. W. Ross, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We present the results of a series of model Monte Carlo calculations of the scattering of spin-polarized electrons from gold foil targets. Our calculations examine the behavior of the left-right scattering asymmetry A as a function of various parameters conventionally used in extrapolation of the left-right asymmetry to single atom and/or elastic scattering conditions. These parameters include target thickness, scattered count rate, and the maximum energy that an electron can have lost in the target and still be detected. Data are obtained at incident electron energies of 10–120 keV, with detector-subtended half-cone angles of 5°, 10°, and 20°, and gold …

Efficacy Of Wolfin To Repel Black-Tailed Deer, Dale L. Nolte, Kimberly K. Wagner Oct 2001

Efficacy Of Wolfin To Repel Black-Tailed Deer, Dale L. Nolte, Kimberly K. Wagner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Deer and elk provide many desirable recreational opportunities but also can cause severe conflicts with humans. Excluding them from agricultural resources or from roadways is desirable, but fencing is expensive. A chemical barrier would offer a feasible alternative to reduce damage caused by deer. A series of three tests was conducted to assess whether black-tailed deer avoided areas treated with Wolfin, a synthetic predator odor. Wolfin failed to repel deer during any of these trials. We conclude that Wolfin, as applied within this study, is unlikely to reduce problems roused by free-ranging deer. West. J Appl. For. 16(4):182-186.

Class Actions As Alternative Dispute Resolution, John C. Kleefeld Oct 2001

Class Actions As Alternative Dispute Resolution, John C. Kleefeld

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article situates the action in ADR theory by viewing it as a hybrid process that draws on both the command and consensus portions of a rational dispute resolution continuum. Class action legislation does this in a number of ways, the most important being the scope it gives to courts to approve or disapprove class settlements that have been privately negotiated by defence and class counsel. The rationale is to protect the interests of absent class members and ensure that the legislative goals of class actions-access to justice, judicial economy and behaviour modification-are well served. Class actions can thereby render …

The Standardized Fish Bioassay Procedure For Detecting And Culturing Actively Toxic Pfiesteria, Used By Two Reference Laboratories For Atlantic And Gulf Coast States, Joann M. Burkholder, Harold G. Marshall, David W. Seaborn, Nora J. Deamer-Melia

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In the absence of purified standards of toxins from Pfiesteria species, appropriately conducted fish bioassays are the "gold standard" that must be used to detect toxic strains of Pfiesteria slop. from natural estuarine water or sediment samples and to culture actively toxic Pfiesteria. In this article, we describe the standardized steps of our fish bioassay as an abbreviated term for a procedure that includes two sets of trials with fish, following the Henle-Koch postulates modified for toxic rather than infectious agents. This procedure was developed in 1991, and has been refined over more than 12 years of experience in …

People Of The Scarred Coin, Thomas F. Mckenna C.M., S.T.D. Oct 2001

People Of The Scarred Coin, Thomas F. Mckenna C.M., S.T.D.

Vincentian Studies

In Vincent de Paul’s metaphor, persons who are poor are like badly scarred coins; they have their humanity on one side and Christ’s face on the other. We are to see God in them and that is “the basis of human dignity.” This also motivates Vincentian work in education. As Thomas McKenna writes, education “nourishes” dignity, both by teaching poor persons themselves and “by sensitizing everyone else to their dignity and worth.” McKenna emphasizes the need for Vincentian institutions to exercise transparency, or simplicity, as Vincent called it and explains transparency’s particular application to education.

The Emblem And Motto Of The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Oct 2001

The Emblem And Motto Of The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

The emblem of Jesus standing on a globe with his arms stretched downward and the biblical citation Evangelizare pauperibus misit me are the Congregation’s most familiar emblem and motto. They have been known since the time of Vincent de Paul, but have only been used together since the mid-nineteenth century. Their origins and antecedents, along with other emblems and mottos that have been employed, are discussed. Their uses and theological meaning are explained. Twenty-six images are included.

Incarnational Spiritual Influences: Baptismal Covenant & The Life Styles / Stages Of Elizabeth Seton, Frances Ryan D.C. Oct 2001

Incarnational Spiritual Influences: Baptismal Covenant & The Life Styles / Stages Of Elizabeth Seton, Frances Ryan D.C.

Vincentian Studies

Elizabeth fulfilled many roles during her life: daughter and stepchild, wife, widow, convert, mother, and foundress. To each she brought her understanding of her baptismal covenant with God. This article explores each of Elizabeth’s roles, and how the combination of relationships and events led her to see God in others and understand God’s will for her life. This understanding of God that develops through life stages and events is a hallmark of Incarnational Spirituality. The culture that Elizabeth was born into, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s influence on her ideas about education, and early life in the community of the Sisters of Charity …

Experimental Study Of Single And Two-Phase Heat Transfer In Mini-Channel, Shurong Tian Oct 2001

Experimental Study Of Single And Two-Phase Heat Transfer In Mini-Channel, Shurong Tian

Theses

Flow boiling in mini-channels has been the most recent trend in high performance cooling techniques, in spite of an increased pressure drop. An experimental study of pressure and heat transfer characteristics of water in mini-channel evaporators was carried out in this study. The test section consisted of 6, U-shape, parallel, mini-channels. The mini-channels were formed by brazing an etched, flat, stainless steel plate. The hydraulic diameter of a single mini-channel was 0.725 mm. Distilled water, used as the fluid medium, flowed in the mini-channels; while the heating oil flowed on the outside of mini-channel. The inlet temperature of the water …

Modeling And Simulation Of Steady State And Transient Behaviors For Emergent Socs, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Donald E. Thomas Oct 2001

Modeling And Simulation Of Steady State And Transient Behaviors For Emergent Socs, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Donald E. Thomas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce a formal basis for viewing computer systems as mixed steady state and non-steady state (transient) behaviors to motivate novel design strategies resulting from simultaneous consideration of function, scheduling and architecture. We relate three design styles: Hierarchical decomposition, static mapping and directed platform that have traditionally been separate. By considering them together, we reason that once a steady state system is mapped to an architecture, the unused processing and communication power may be viewed as a platform for a transient system, ultimately resulting in more effective design approaches that ease the static mapping problem while still allowing for effective …

On Clustering And Retrieval Of Video Shots, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang Oct 2001

On Clustering And Retrieval Of Video Shots, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Clustering of video data is an important issue in video abstraction, browsing and retrieval. In this paper, we propose a two-level hierarchical clustering approach by aggregating shots with similar motion and color features. Motion features are computed directly from 20 tensor histograms, while color features are represented by 30 color histograms. Cluster validity analysis is further applied to automatically determine the number of clusters at each level. Video retrieval can then be done directly based on the result of clustering. The proposed approach is found to be useful particularly for sports games, where motion and color are important visual cues …

Jointly Coordinating Ecn And Tcp For Rapid Adaptation To Varying Bandwidth, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott Oct 2001

Jointly Coordinating Ecn And Tcp For Rapid Adaptation To Varying Bandwidth, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The introduction of service differentiation in the Internet implies that the residual bandwidth available to best-effort traffic becomes highly variable. We explore the design of a rapidly-reactive congestion control framework, where the ECN-aware best-effort flows aggressively go after any unused capacity. By making routers mark packets in a much more aggressive manner, we are able to achieve fast backoff in the network without resorting to the TCP's current drastic step of halving the congestion window. Simulations indicate that our ECN-mod protocol is better than ECN-NewReno in exploiting rapid variations in the available bandwidth. Moreover, the milder backoff policy of ECN-mod …
