Muslim Perspectives On The Military Orders During The Crusades, William J. Hamblin
Muslim Perspectives On The Military Orders During The Crusades, William J. Hamblin
BYU Studies
On July 4, 1187, the armies of Saladin, sultan of Egypt and Syria, surrounded thousands of Crusaders surmounting the Horns of Hattin (fig. 1) near Tiberias in Galilee. Exhausted by heat, thirst, and days of marching and fighting, the Crusaders were forced to surrender. Thousands of the resulting prisoners were sold into slavery, but not all. While King Guy and the Frankish aristocrats who had led their followers to disaster were allowed for the most part to ransom themselves, the knights of the Military Orders faced a different fate. After his triumphant victory, Saladin singled out the captive Templars and …

Inquiry Into Reading Assessment: Teachers' Perceptions Of Effective Practices, Mary B. Campbell
Inquiry Into Reading Assessment: Teachers' Perceptions Of Effective Practices, Mary B. Campbell
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Teachers confront a number of challenges in assessing children's literacy and one of the most fundamental is the selection of appropriate assessment tools. Teachers also continuously seek meaningful ways to document and assess student performance in formative and summative ways. The purpose of this study was to determine what elementary teachers' believe are the most effective assessment practices for gathering data about the reading performance of their students. Data collection was accomplished through the use of a Reading Assessment Survey distributed to 12 elementary schools throughout the greater Chicago area. The survey contained a listing of 38 assessment practices and …
Brain Surfing: A Strategy For Making Cross-Curricular Connections, Susan Davis Lenski
Brain Surfing: A Strategy For Making Cross-Curricular Connections, Susan Davis Lenski
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many educators believe that teaching an integrated curriculum should help students develop cross-curricular connections. Often, however, students do not make connections between subject areas even when they are in classrooms with integrated units. This article presents a strategy called Brain Surfing that teachers can use to facilitate connections to subject areas during classroom discussions.

Using Thematic Units To Decrease Problematic Behavior In Students, Amy Stevens Griffith, Nancy Spence Horton
Using Thematic Units To Decrease Problematic Behavior In Students, Amy Stevens Griffith, Nancy Spence Horton
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many students in general education classrooms exhibit problematic behavior at some point during their academic careers. These students often have special learning needs in reading instruction and instructional emphasis on appropriate behavior. Using thematic units for reading and language arts instruction can improve these students' reading skills and help students with problematic behavior learn more appropriate standards of conduct at the same time.
The Impact Of Irish Ireland On Young Poland, 1890-1918, John A. Merchant
The Impact Of Irish Ireland On Young Poland, 1890-1918, John A. Merchant
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
John. A. Merchant examines the impact of a contemporary cultural movement, Irish Ireland, on its Polish counterpart, Young Poland. He traces the reception of Irish literature in the form of translations of works by W. B. Yeats and John Millington Synge in Poland through translations by Jan Kasprowicz, Zenon "Miriam" Przesmycki and others as well as through a variety of cultural commentaries by Polish critics and by means of stage productions of Irish plays by theater directors, such as Tadeusz Pawlikowski.

Under a leaden April Arctic sky, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Healy left the swell of the southern Labrador Sea and entered the Arctic ice pack for the first time, settling in as if she had finally found her home. The deck log notes that at about 4 pm on the 4th April 2000, the ship’s commanding officer, Capt. Bob Garrett, assumed both the deck and the con for the momentous occasion (Figure 1). The ship entered the ice at 51° 33.0’ N, 54° 33.33’ W. The ice trials of the newest U.S. icebreaker were underway!
Acoustic Detections Of Singing Humpback Whales In Deep Waters Off The British Isles, Russell Charif, Phillip Clapham, Christopher Clark
Acoustic Detections Of Singing Humpback Whales In Deep Waters Off The British Isles, Russell Charif, Phillip Clapham, Christopher Clark
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
From October 1996 through September 1998, we used bottom-mounted hydrophone arrays to monitor deep-water areas north and west of the British Isles for songs of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). Singing humpbacks were consistently detected between October and March from the Shetland- Faroe Islands south to waters west of the English Channel. Temporal and geographic patterns of song detections, and movements of individually tracked whales, exhibited a southwesterly trend over this period, but with no corresponding northward trend between April and September. These results, together with a review of historical data from this area, suggest that the offshore waters …

Despite the extensive use of photographic identification methods to investigate humpback whales in the North Pacific, few quantitative analyses have been conducted. We report on a comprehensive analysis of interchange in the North Pacific among three wintering regions (Mexico, Hawaii, and Japan) each with two to three subareas, and feeding areas that extended from southern California to the Aleutian Islands. Of the 6,413 identification photographs of humpback whales obtained by 16 independent research groups between 1990 and 1993 and examined for this study, 3,650 photographs were determined to be of suitable quality. A total of 1,241 matches was found by …

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, all of America stood not on the sidelines of an act of terrorism but precisely on the frontlines of several attacks that were tantamount to war. Most of us in our lifetimes have been spared the incomprehensible horror of combat because courageous men and women in the armed services have stood up for us and borne the brunt of the physical and mental torment that comes with deadly confrontation. And, they are willing to continue to do this so that we can go on about our lives and our way of life. September 11th brought …
