English Faculty Publications

A Review by James C. McKusick. Some of the best recent scholarship in our field has been concerned with the political and geographic contexts (and subtexts) of Romantic literature. In particular, several recent books have addressed the relationship between Romanticism as a literary field and the new economic, geographic, and social realities that emerged in consequence of British imperial expansion on a global scale. Two recent collections of essays are exemplary in the scope and sophistication of their approach to these new geopolitical realities: Romanticism, Race, and Imperial Culture (1996), edited by Alan Richardson and Sonia Hofkosh, and Romanticism and …

Grief And Burial In The American Southwest: The Role Of Evolutionary Theory In The Interpretation Of Mortuary Remains, Douglas H. Macdonald Oct 2001

Grief And Burial In The American Southwest: The Role Of Evolutionary Theory In The Interpretation Of Mortuary Remains, Douglas H. Macdonald

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Evolutionary theory, in consort with Marxism and processualism, provides new insights into the interpretation of grave-good variation. Processual interpretations of burial sites in the American Southwest cite age, sex, or social rank as the main determinants of burial-good variation. Marxist theorists suggest that mortuary ritual mediates social tension between an egalitarian mindset and an existing social inequality. Evolutionary theory provides a supplementary explanatory framework. Recent studies guided by kin-selection theory suggest that humans grieve more for individuals of high reproductive value and genetic relatedness. Ethnographic examples also show that individuals mourn more intensively and, thus, place more social emphasis on …

Nonlegal Regulation Of The Legal Profession: Social Norms In Professional Communities, W. Bradley Wendel Oct 2001

Nonlegal Regulation Of The Legal Profession: Social Norms In Professional Communities, W. Bradley Wendel

Vanderbilt Law Review

In this Article, Professor Wendel analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of community-based responses to unethical behavior by lawyers. The limits of formal legal regulation of the legal profession are well known. Additional questions have been raised about the efficacy of motivating lawyers to act ethically merely by giving appropriate instruction. What is left, therefore, is a complex and little-studied, but very real, array of informal sanctions. These sanctions are controlled by individual members of the professional community, not by the court or organized bar, and therefore operate largely without the transparency and procedural regularity of formal legal regimes. The advantage …

Very Fast Tree-Structured Vector Quantization, Todd K. Moon, Christian B. Peel, Scott E. Budge Oct 2001

Very Fast Tree-Structured Vector Quantization, Todd K. Moon, Christian B. Peel, Scott E. Budge

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Very fast tree-structured vector quantization employs scalar quantization decisions at each level, but chooses the dimension on which to quantize based on the coordinate direction of maximum variance. Because the quantization is scalar, searches are no more complex than scalar quantization - providing significant improvement in complexity over full-searched or even tree-structured vector quantization - but the method preserves the shape and memory advantages of conventional vector quantization. However, the space filling advantage of VQ is forfeited, since each Voronoi cell is a rectangular cuboid.

Forested Wetlands Of The Southern United States: A Bibliography, William Conner, Nicole L. Hill, Evander M. Whitehead, William S. Busbee, Marceau A. Ratard, Mehmet Ozalp, Darrell L. Smith, James P. Marshall Oct 2001

Forested Wetlands Of The Southern United States: A Bibliography, William Conner, Nicole L. Hill, Evander M. Whitehead, William S. Busbee, Marceau A. Ratard, Mehmet Ozalp, Darrell L. Smith, James P. Marshall

Publications

The term forested wetland covers a variety of forest types including mangroves, cypress/tupelo swamps, bottomland hardwoods, pocosins and Carolina bays, flatwoods, and mountain fens. These forests are dominated by woody species that have morphological features, physiological adaptations, and/or reproductive strategies enabling them to achieve maturity and reproduce in an environment where the soils within the rooting zone may be inundated or saturated for various periods during the growing season. Although alluvial floodplains occur along most streams of the United States, they are most extensive in the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Gulf Coastal Plain, and Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Only about half of …

Residential Location And Intra City Mobility In An African City: Some Empirical Observations Among Migrants In Metropolitan Accra, Ghana, S. Obeng-Manu Gyimah Oct 2001

Residential Location And Intra City Mobility In An African City: Some Empirical Observations Among Migrants In Metropolitan Accra, Ghana, S. Obeng-Manu Gyimah

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Although many facets of the migration phenomena in sub-Saharan Africa have been studied extensively, there is a paucity of research on residential mobility behavior of migrants. This exploratory study examines the residential mobility in Accra, Ghana, using a retrospective survey of randomly selected migrant households. To examine the direction of moves, Accra was delineated into three major zones: the inner city, former periphery and recent periphery. The results demonstrate that unlike studies elsewhere, the inner zone of Accra does not serve as the major port of entry for migrants. While the former periphery served as the zone of entry for …

Missing Data In Quantitative Social Research, S. Obeng-Manu Gyimah Oct 2001

Missing Data In Quantitative Social Research, S. Obeng-Manu Gyimah

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Almost invariably, the data available to the social scientist display one or more characteristics of missing information. Even though reasons for non response are varied, most frequently, they reflect the unwillingness of respondents to provide information on undesirable social behaviours and on issues considered as private. Besides these, sloppy research designs often leads to ambiguous and poorly structured survey questions which provide a recipe for low response. Longitudinal surveys also suffer from incompleteness due to attrition resulting from death and emigration, while in retrospective surveys, memory effect might be a major source of non-response.

While there is no consensus among …

Critical Analysis Of Cerebrovascular Autoregulation During Repeated Head-Up Tilt., R L Hughson, M R Edwards, D D O'Leary, J K Shoemaker Oct 2001

Critical Analysis Of Cerebrovascular Autoregulation During Repeated Head-Up Tilt., R L Hughson, M R Edwards, D D O'Leary, J K Shoemaker

Kinesiology Publications

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebrovascular autoregulation has been described with a phase lead of cerebral blood flow preceding changes in cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), but there has been less focus on the effect of CPP on cerebral vascular resistance. We investigated these relations during spontaneous fluctuations (control) and repeated head-up tilt.

METHODS: Eight healthy adults were studied in supine rest and repeated tilt with 10-second supine, 10 seconds at 45 degrees head-up tilt for a total of 12 cycles. Cerebral blood flow was estimated from mean flow velocity (MFV) by transcranial Doppler ultrasound, CPP was estimated from corrected finger pressure (CPP(F)), …
