In a recent analysis of SPA records from the Northern Great Plains, pregnancy percentage, calving percentage and weaning percentage were important production variables related to profit (Dunn, 2000). The high profit group did not wean heavier calves than the medium profit group. Consistent with other studies, the high profit group had lower investment and total expenditures per cow than the medium or low profit groups. It has long been known that adequate energy is required for high reproduction in beef cows. Historically, most high energy supplements contained starch from grains such as corn, barley, etc., which may cause some negative effects on forage digestion when fed at relatively high levels. Reproductive failure in young cows is expensive to many beef operations in the Northern Great Plains. Scientists, nutritionists, and producers have typically placed great effort into heifer development and mature cow management at the expense of two- and three-year-old cows. Meek et al. (1999), working with a ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills, found that the net present value (current animal value accounting for time value of money) of beef females peaked at four years old. In the mid-90's, Cattle Fax released some alarming data. They showed that over the previous 5-year period the value of the beef rib and loin had increased by just 3-4% while the value of the chuck and round had dropped by 24-25%. Given that these later two primals make up the more than 56% of the carcass, it was clear that dramatic action was needed to reverse the trend. Agriculturists have long used leasing arrangements as a means of farming or ranching with more than owned resources. Most commonly, land has been leased, but other resources can be acquired in a similar manner. Beef cows are leased between parties on either a cash or share of calf crop basis, but share leases seem to be predominant. Bulls, when not part of a cow share agreement, are primarily leased for cash.

The National Non-Fed Beef Quality Audit – 1994 (NNFBQA-94) was conducted to benchmark the quality characteristics of market cows and bulls in the beef and dairy industries for purposes of encouraging implementation of quality management practices within the beef industry. From this audit, it was determined that producers were losing $69.90 for each market cow and bull harvested due to quality defects. Fault injection deals with the insertion or simulation of faults in order to test the robustness and fault tolerance of a software application. Such measures are generally performed on software that is mission critical, to the extent that failure could have significant negative ramifications. Actual injection of faults can be performed either at compile time, when additional code is inserted to force error conditions to evaluate to true, or at runtime during which faults are injected into the software's execution environment. This paper focuses on the latter type of fault injection and presents a new mechanism for inserting environmental faults. …

This dissertation explores optimal path planning for air vehicles. An air vehicle exposed to illumination by a tracking radar is considered and the problem of determining an optimal planar trajectory connecting two prespecified points is addressed. An analytic solution yielding the trajectory minimizing the received radar energy reflected from the target is derived using the Calculus of Variations. Additionally, the related problem of an air vehicle tracked by a passive sensor is also solved. Using the insights gained from the single air vehicle radar exposure minimization problem, a hierarchical cooperative control law is formulated to determine the optimal trajectories that …

Coherent pulse train processing is most commonly used in airborne pulse Doppler radar, achieving adequate transmitter/receiver isolation and excellent resolution properties while inherently inducing ambiguities in Doppler and range. First introduced by Palermo in 1962 using two conjugate LFM pulses, the primary nonlinear suppression objective involves reducing range ambiguity, given the waveform is nominally unambiguous in Doppler, by using interpulse and intrapulse coding (pulse compression) to discriminate received ambiguous pulse responses. By introducing a nonlinear operation on compressed (undesired) pulse responses within individual channels, ambiguous energy levels are reduced in channel outputs. Origins Of Nonstoichiometry And Vacancy Ordering In Sc1-X□Xs, Gus L. W. Hart, Alex Zunger

Whereas nearly all compounds AnBm obey Dalton's rule of integer stoichiometry (n:m, both integer), there is a class of systems, exemplified by the rocksalt structure Sc1-x□xS, that exhibits large deviations from stoichiometry via vacancies, even at low temperatures. By combining first-principles total energy calculations with lattice statistical mechanics, we scan an astronomical number of possible structures, identifying the stable ground states. Surprisingly, all have the same motifs: (111) planes with (112) vacancy rows arranged in (110) columns. Electronic structure calculations of the ground states (identified out of ~3 × 10^6 structures) reveal the remarkable origins of nonstoichiometry.
