Use Of Self Organized Maps For Feature Extraction Of Hyperspectral Data, Thomas C. Null

In this paper, the problem of analyzing hyperspectral data is presented. The complexity of multi-dimensional data leads to the need for computer assisted data compression and labeling of important features. A brief overview of Self-Organizing Maps and their variants is given and then two possible methods of data analysis are examined. These methods are incorporated into a program derived from som_toolbox2. In this program, ASD data (data collected by an Analytical Spectral Device sensor) is read into a variable, relevant bands for discrimination between classes are extracted, and several different methods of analyzing the results are employed. High-voltage SiC Schottky barrier diodes have been fabricated with 1mm square contacts. The SBD?s were fabricated using both an argon implant and a field plate overlap for edge termination. The Versatile Automated Semiconductor Testing and Characterization system was designed to fully test and characterize these devices with as little human interaction as possible. The focus of this thesis is to discuss the usefulness of the VASTAC system. Emphasis is placed on it?s versatility derived from a modular design allowing the system to perform a variety of tests. Mary Wollstronecraft once said, probably with a sigh, "I do earnestly wish to see the distinction of sex confounded in society, unless where love animates the behavior." Two centuries later, many groups in American political life are still caught in the same dilemma: hoping that a just society will take account of an essential characteristic -- race and sex spring to mind -- in ways that will benefit the group, while eschewing the potentially harmful characterizations that lie just on the flip side of the coin.

The temperature dependence of the exchange bias field is investigated by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry in Fe1-xZnxF2(110)/Fe14 nm/Ag35 nm, x=0.4. Its blocking temperature exhibits a significant enhancement with respect to the global ordering temperature TN=46.9 K, of the bulk antiferromagnet Fe0.6Zn0.4F2. The enhancement is attributed to fluctuations of the diamagnetic dilution which creates clusters on all length scales having a Zn dilution of 0<~x<~1. While the infinite clusters give rise to the well-known Griffiths phase, finite clusters also provoke a local enhancement of the exchange bias. The temperature dependence of the integral exchange bias effect is modeled by averaging all local contributions of the antiferromagnetic surface magnetization which exhibit a surface critical behavior.

Thermal Effects In Dynamics Of Interfaces, Alexander Umantsev

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Working Papers

Dynamical Ginzburg–Landau theory is applied to the study of thermal effects of motion of interfaces that appear after different phase transitions. These effects stem from the existence of the surface thermodynamic properties and temperature gradients in the interfacial transition region. Thermal effects may be explained by the introduction of a new thermodynamic force exerted on the interface, called here Gibbs–Duhem force, and the internal energy density flux through the interface. The evolution equations for the interfacial motion are derived. For the experimental verification of the thermal effects during continuous ordering the expression is derived for the amplitude of temperature waves.
