Childhood Trauma, Family Functioning And Adult Health: Protective Factors As Mediating Variables, Jennifer Ann Morrow Jan 2001

Childhood Trauma, Family Functioning And Adult Health: Protective Factors As Mediating Variables, Jennifer Ann Morrow

Open Access Dissertations

The current study looked at the plausibility of two theories: Social Cognitive Theory and Survivor Theory to explain the interrelationships between childhood trauma, family functioning, protective factors, and adult health. The interrelationships among these constructs were explored with a sample of 451 undergraduate students . Structural equation models revealed that there is a mediational relationship between childhood trauma and health through social support. This relationship was similar for men and women. Cluster analysis and multivariate analysis of covariance revealed that individuals with high levels of all the childhood traumas (physical, psychological, and sexual abuse) have significantly more physical and psychological …

Objective: To identify at-risk teen populations and their sources of cigarettes, in order to help target future efforts in prevention of teen smoking. Methods: Analysis of smoking behavior questions for students in grades 6, 7, 9 and 12 from the 1997 Pennsylvania Biennial Youth Risk Survey. Results: Current smoking prevalence was 20.9% overall. The number of ninth grade smokers was almost five times higher than the number of sixth grade smokers (30.6% vs. 6.6%). Seventy-three percent of the teens identified friends as a source of tobacco. Stores became the most common source for twelfth graders only. Conclusion: Teenage smoking remains …

Beyond Pain Management: A Primer For Providing Quality End-Of-Life Care, Linda P. Tomko, Terri L. Maxwell Jan 2001

Beyond Pain Management: A Primer For Providing Quality End-Of-Life Care, Linda P. Tomko, Terri L. Maxwell

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Providing excellent care for a dying patient is something all patients deserve. Hospices and palliative care centers exist in many areas to aid primary care physicians and patients through this difficult time. It is important to remember that most patients want to prepare for death, if at all possible. Everyone does this in his or her own way, but oftentimes concern about pain and symptom management interfere with this very involved and valuable process. Being prepared to treat these symptoms as well as addressing your patient's emotional needs is imperative. Referral to a hospice, if possible, will only strengthen the …

The Relationship Of Community And Prevention Coalition Characteristics To Rates Of Adolescent Substance Abuse, Ilene Klein Jan 2001

The Relationship Of Community And Prevention Coalition Characteristics To Rates Of Adolescent Substance Abuse, Ilene Klein

Open Access Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between community and coalition characteristics in predicting community-wide rates of adolescent substance use. Coalition characteristics (i.e., ratings of the quality of prevention plans, key informants ratings of the perceived effectiveness of the coalition in the community) and characteristics of 20 different communities in Rhode Island (i.e., median family income, amount of funding each community received for prevention) were examined to determine which were better predictors of the community-wide variability in eighth grader's self-reported alcohol use between 1993 and 1995. Due to the multilevel nature of the data used in this study the Hierarchical Linear Modeling …

The Statutory Derivative Action In Singapore: A Critical And Comparative Examination, Pearlie Koh Jan 2001

The Statutory Derivative Action In Singapore: A Critical And Comparative Examination, Pearlie Koh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As a mechanism for shareholder control of corporate wrongs and thus as a tool of corporate governance, the statutory derivative action has had much international attention given to it, particularly in the last 10 years. Singapore introduced its statutory derivative action in 1993 and since then, there have been two reported cases in which the action was invoked. In this paper, I consider the Singapore derivative action as contained in sections 216A and 216B of the Singapore Companies Act. The approach taken is a comparative one as I also look at the statutory derivative actions in Australia and other common …

Renal Function In Suckling And Fasting Pups Of The Northern Elephant Seal, Dorian S. Houser, Daniel E E. Crocker, Paul M. Webb, Daniel P. Costa

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Elephant seals fast for prolonged periods without access to water. This is made possible, in part, by reductions in urine production. However, the mechanisms involved in reducing urine production are not understood. In this study, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured in five northern elephant seal pups (Mirounga angustirostris) via the inulin clearance technique. Measurements were made during day 9 and day 18–22 of nursing and the second and eighth week of the postweaning fast. Plasma aldosterone and cortisol concentrations, quantified by radioimmunoassay, were measured in eight other weanlings during the second and eighth week of the fast. …

Induction Of Pep Carboxylase And Crassulacean Acid Metabolism By Gibberellic Acid In Mesembryanthemum Crystallinum, Lonnie J. Guralnick, Maurice S.B. Ku, Gerald E. Edwards, Darren Strand, Brandon Hockema, Jeannine Earnest Jan 2001

Induction Of Pep Carboxylase And Crassulacean Acid Metabolism By Gibberellic Acid In Mesembryanthemum Crystallinum, Lonnie J. Guralnick, Maurice S.B. Ku, Gerald E. Edwards, Darren Strand, Brandon Hockema, Jeannine Earnest

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

The induction of Crassulacean acid metabolism in Mesembryanthemum crystallinum was investigated in response to foliar application of gibberellic acid (GA). After 5 weeks of treatment, GA-treated plants showed 1.7- to almost a 4-fold increase of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPcase) activity with a concomitant increase in acid metabolism when compared to control plants. Immunoblot analysis indicated an increase in the PEPcase protein similar to that of salt treatment while Rubisco did not show a similar rise. The results indicate that exogenously applied GA accelerates plant developmental expression of PEPcase and Crassulacean acid metabolism in M. crystallinum.

Resilience And Recovery Of Coral Reefs From Large-Scale Disturbances: Contrasting Patterns For San Salvador Island, Bahamas, And Belize, Paulette Peckol, Benjamin J. Greenstein

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Coral cover and diversity are declining while macroalgal abundance is increasing in most Caribbean coral reef systems. Although a complex interaction of natural and anthropogenic disturbances is likely causal, the effects of a specific disturbance may vary dramatically for different reef systems. The coral reefs off the coasts of San Salvador Island, Bahamas and Belize, considered to be in relatively good condition, recently experienced near-direct hits by Hurricanes Floyd (1999) and Mitch (1998), respectively. In addition, NOAA scientists indicated that during 1998, tropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs) reached their highest levels above the normal annual maximum for this past century. …

Taphonomic Evidence For Late Pleistocene Transitions In Coral Reef Community Composition, San Salvador, Bahamas, Thomas A. Rothfus, Benjamin J. Greenstein

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Over the past 20 years, the composi tion of Caribbean coral reef communities has changed drastically. The ecology of modern reefs, however, has only been studied since the late 1950's. Thus, only a thirty year data set on changes in coral community composi tion exists with which to assess the current faunal transition. The need for longer term data has been recognized by marine ecologists as essential for determining whether the cur rent transition is part of a long tenn cycle or itself is an unprecedented phenomenon.

Moving Toward A First-Best World: Minnesota's Position On Multiethnic Adoptions, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2001

Moving Toward A First-Best World: Minnesota's Position On Multiethnic Adoptions, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

The best world allows a child to grow to adulthood with biological parents, or at least one parent, who love the child unconditionally and who have resources to support the child. A second-best world allows the child to permanently and completely become part of an extended family that loves him or her and has the resources for supporting and meeting the child's needs. Hopefully this process costs little in terms of time or emotional or physical harm to the child. In traditional third-party adoptions, the child permanently moves and becomes part of (hopefully, at low cost) a family that will …

Uncas picked up a five-letter name when he was a boarding school student in Orange, Virginia. By now, it is the way his friends and colleagues, his students and his clients, his wife and his children and his neighbors, identify him. It works throughout the United States and in Canada. I would not be surprised to see it work in, say, the offices of the European Union in Salzburg or in the former Soviet Union. (It occurs to me that this universal name for Andrew W. McThenia, Jr., a name his boarding-school classmates borrowed from James Fenimore Cooper, shares brevity …

A Guideline For Initiating An Environmental Management System In Academia, David Turkow Jan 2001

A Guideline For Initiating An Environmental Management System In Academia, David Turkow

Theses

Managing environmental concerns in an academic environment poses unique challenges to colleges and universities. Many college EHS professionals face an uphill battle to promote environmental improvement in an organized, systematic, and sustainable fashion - an Environmental Management System (EMS) is designed to do just that. Some inherent difficulties encountered in an academic setting include 1) lack of management support and 2) the perception that colleges do not have major environmental compliance issues (contributing factor to #1). By identifying issues unique to academia and differences in perception between EHS professionals and academic senior management, chances for successfully initiating/implementing an EMS are …

The Functionalization Of Thermally Stable Third-Order Nlo Chromophores, James Richard Sawyer Jan 2001

The Functionalization Of Thermally Stable Third-Order Nlo Chromophores, James Richard Sawyer

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to functionalize NLO chromophore systems to incorporate them into polymeric matricies by covalent attachment. The functionalization of a series of NLO chromophores based on the N,N-diphenyl-N-[7-(2-benzothiazolyl)-9,9-diethyl-2- fluorenyl ]amine structure has been investigated. All the chromophores were synthesized from the intermediate chromophore N-phenyl-N-[4-(4-bromophenyl)phenyl ]-N-[7-(2- benzothiazolyl)-9,9-diethyl-2-fluorenyl ]amine which was prepared by a six-step process. Bromination of fluorene yielded 2,7-dibromo-fluorene which could be converted to 2,7- dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene by alkylation with ethyl iodide in DMSO.Reaction of 2,7- dibromo-9,9-diethylfluorene with one equivalent of butyl lithium followed by reaction with DMF provides 2-bromo-7-formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene.Condensation of 2-bromo-7- formyl-9,9-diethylfluorene and 2-aminobenzenethiol in DMSO results in …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The upper 1200 m of pre-Pliocene sediment recovered by Cape Roberts Project (CRP) drilling off the Victoria Land coast of Antarctica between 1997-1999 has been subdivided into 54 unconformity-bound stratigraphic sequences, spanning the period c. 32 to 17 Ma. The sequences are recognised on the basis of the cyclical vertical stacking of their constituent lithofacies, which are enclosed by erosion surfaces produced during the grounding of the advancing ice margin onto the sea floor. Each sequence represents deposition in a range of offshore shelf to coastal glacimarine sedimentary environments during oscillations in the ice margin across the Western Ross Sea …

Building Blocks For Reliable Complex Nonlinear Numerical Simulations, Helen Yee Jan 2001

Building Blocks For Reliable Complex Nonlinear Numerical Simulations, Helen Yee

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

This chapter describes some of the building blocks to ensure a higher level of confidence in the predictability and reliability (PAR) of numerical simulation of multiscale complex nonlinear problems. The focus is on relating PAR of numerical simulations with complex nonlinear phenomena of numerics. To isolate sources of numerical uncertainties, the possible discrepancy between the chosen partial differential equation (PDE) model and the real physics and/or experimental data is set aside. The discussion is restricted to how well numerical schemes can mimic the solution behavior of the underlying PDE model for finite time steps and grid spacings. The situation is …
