Locomotor And Habitat Classifications Of Cercopithecoid Postcranial Material From Sterkfontein Member 4, Bolt's Farm And Swartkrans Members 1 And 2, South Africa, Sarah Elton

KIP Articles

Much southern African cercopithecoid postcranial material is not associated with craniodental remains. Consequently, this postcranial material cannot be confidently assigned to a particular taxon, with the result that little is known about the locomotor strategies and habitat preferences of specific Plio-Pleistocene cercopithecoids from southern Africa. However, cercopithecoid postcrania can provide important information about habitats that were present at fossil sites, even when the material is not attributed to taxa. In this paper, ecomorphic analysis is used to assign cercopithecoid postcranial material from Sterkfontein Member 4, Bolt' s Farm and Swartkrans Members 1 and 2 to one of three habitat/locomotor categories: …

Non-Uniform Free-Free Absorption In The Gps Radio Galaxy 0108+388, Jonathan M. Marr, G. B. Taylor, Fronefield Crawford Jan 2001

Non-Uniform Free-Free Absorption In The Gps Radio Galaxy 0108+388, Jonathan M. Marr, G. B. Taylor, Fronefield Crawford

Physics Faculty Scholarship

We have observed the canonical gigahertz-peaked spectrum source 0108+388 with the Very Long Baseline Array at a range of frequencies above and below the spectral peak. The activity that dominates the radio emission from 0108+388, which is also classified as a compact symmetric object, is thought to be less than 1000 years old. We present strong evidence that the spectral turnover in 0108+388 results from free-free absorption by nonuniform gas, possibly in the form of a disk in the central tens of parsecs.

Enhancing Training And Presence In Virtual Environments Using Passive Haptics, Brent E. Insko Jan 2001

Enhancing Training And Presence In Virtual Environments Using Passive Haptics, Brent E. Insko

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

One of the worst virtual environment experiences is to virtually contact something and feel nothing. Visual-haptic sensory conflicts are normally dominated by visual perception. Therefore, augmenting a high-fidelity visual virtual environment with low-fidelity haptic objects, called passive haptics, should markedly improve both sense of presence and task training effectiveness. Testing these hypotheses, I found adding a 1.5 inch physical ledge to a visual-cliff virtual environment increased participants' sense of presence as measured by subjective questionnaires, observed participant behaviors, and physiological responses. I next examined memory model creation and training effectiveness for a navigation task in a virtual environment with and …

Computer Graphics Optique: Optical Superposition Of Projected Computer Graphics, Aditi Majumder Jan 2001

Computer Graphics Optique: Optical Superposition Of Projected Computer Graphics, Aditi Majumder

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

We present some ideas and demonstrations for a hybrid projector-based rendering and display technique we call Computer Graphics Optique. Instead of partially overlapping projected images to achieve a wide-area display, we completely overlap projected images on top of each other to achieve the addition of light and color in an "optical composition buffer''. The idea is to use the optical composition to replace some analytical computation, to increase rendering speed, gain flexibility, intensity range, and intensity resolution. Where projector-based displays are appropriate, potential uses include the optical realization of certain effects normally requiring a digital accumulation buffer, the optical composition …

School Psychologists' Knowledge Of Family Violence And Their Identification Of Children From Violent Homes, Anne Maile Lamoureux Jan 2001

School Psychologists' Knowledge Of Family Violence And Their Identification Of Children From Violent Homes, Anne Maile Lamoureux

Open Access Dissertations

This study assessed school psychologists' knowledge of family violence. Three major questions were addressed: (1) Does a school psychologists' educational, specialized training and perceived experience level affect their knowledge about family violence symptomology, risk factors and facts? (2) Does a school psychologists' educational, specialized training and perceived experience level affect their assessment of a child's risk level and choice of an intervention? (3) Do the age, gender, and behaviors of a child influence participants' assessment of the child's risk level and their choice of an intervention? A random, national sample of school psychologists was mailed the instrument. Information was collected …

A Study Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current In Streamfunction Space, Che Sun Jan 2001

A Study Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current In Streamfunction Space, Che Sun

Open Access Dissertations

Historical hydrographic data from the Southern Ocean are projected into a baroclinic stream function space, generating a three-dimensional gravest empirical mode (GEM) that explains more than 97% of the total density and temperature variance in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) region. An analysis of the ACC fronts and frontal water masses in this streamfunction space shows that both the Subantarctic Mode Water and the Antarctic Intermediate Water are formed by along-isopycnal subduction of polar surface water in the southeast Pacific. The method is then used to calculate the heat flux by the ACC mean flow, showing the primary heat sources …

The Effectiveness Of Transitional Bilingual Education On The Reading Performance Of Cape Verdean Students From Crioulo-Speaking Homes, Kay Helene Wood Jan 2001

The Effectiveness Of Transitional Bilingual Education On The Reading Performance Of Cape Verdean Students From Crioulo-Speaking Homes, Kay Helene Wood

Open Access Dissertations

This research examines the reading performance in English of Cape Verdean students who received three years of Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) in comparison to the performance of Cape Verdean students who did not receive TBE or other bilingual language services. It also compares the performance of Cape Verdean students in grade five to their performance in grade six. Lastly, it compares the students' performance with that of the district-wide population at the same grade levels. Results on the reading subtest of the California Achievement Test, Fifth Edition (CAT/5) administered in grades five and six are used for comparisons. ANOVA is …

Explaining Away Jesus' Resurrection: The Recent Revival Of Hallucination Theories, Gary Habermas Jan 2001

Explaining Away Jesus' Resurrection: The Recent Revival Of Hallucination Theories, Gary Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

A survey of over 1000 recent publications on Jesus’ resurrection reveals some intriguing trends. For example, after almost a century of virtual dormancy, some critical scholars have proposed a number of naturalistic alternative hypotheses to explain away Jesus’ resurrection. Similar to the situation at the end of the Nineteenth Century, the most popular response by critics today is that the disciples experienced some sort of subjective perceptions of Jesus, although He had not been raised from the dead. Hallucination (more properly termed subjective vision) hypotheses come in different varieties. Sometimes it is suggested that the resurrection appearances of Jesus were …

The Potential Clinical Utility Of Methods For Estimating Prior Standing In Specific Cognitive Domains: A Feasibility And Illustration Study, Stephen Correia Jan 2001

The Potential Clinical Utility Of Methods For Estimating Prior Standing In Specific Cognitive Domains: A Feasibility And Illustration Study, Stephen Correia

Open Access Dissertations

This study evaluated the viability of a potential strategy for improving the detection of cognitive decline over currently available IQ-based methods. The proposed strategy makes use of differential cognitive effects across different neurocognitive disorders. It involves examining estimated/obtained difference scores (D-scores) for the specific cognitive domain(s) (SCDs) most affected by a disorder. The current study undertook a broad feasibility test of the strategy as a preliminary step in the development of specific cognitive domain estimation methods (SCDEMs). Clinical and control group score distributions were reconstructed from IQ and SCD test (SCDT) means and standard deviations reported in previously published studies …
