Statistical-Learning Control Of Multiple-Delay Systems With Application To Atm Networks, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Marco Ariola, Vladimir Koltchinskii Jan 2001

Statistical-Learning Control Of Multiple-Delay Systems With Application To Atm Networks, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Marco Ariola, Vladimir Koltchinskii

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Congestion control in the ABR class of ATM network presents interesting challenges due to the presence of multiple uncertain delays. Recently, probabilistic methods and statistical learning theory have been shown to provide approximate solutions to challenging control problems. In this paper, using some recent results by the authors, an efficient statistical algorithm is used to design a robust, fixed-structure, controller for a high-speed communication network with multiple uncertain propagation delays.

Time Delay And Power Control In Spread Spectrum Wireless Networks, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Aly El-Osery, Mo Jamshidi Jan 2001

Time Delay And Power Control In Spread Spectrum Wireless Networks, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Aly El-Osery, Mo Jamshidi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Delay in the computation of the signal-to-interference ratio in communication systems is unavoidable. In the case of mobile communication, delay is a very critical problem due the fast variation of the communication channel and the need for effective, fast and accurate power control. In this paper we present our approach to dealing with the delay in mobile communication systems as well as our controller to achieve and maintain the desired signal quality. We will concentrate on the code division multiple access (CDMA) systems.

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2001

Cleaning Up The Tracks: Superfund Meets Rails-To-Trails, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

For more than one hundred years, railroad cars rumbled and roared along tracks in the Coeur d'Alene River Basin, serving the mining industry in the Panhandle of northern Idaho. As in many parts of the American West, the history of railroads in northern Idaho largely reflects the history of mining in the region. The first gold was discovered in this area in 1883, the same year that the area saw its first line of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1885, the Bunker Hill mine was established near the present town of Kellogg. Four years later, the first rail line of …

The Uniform Mediation Act: To The Spoiled Go The Privileges, Scott H. Hughes Jan 2001

The Uniform Mediation Act: To The Spoiled Go The Privileges, Scott H. Hughes

Faculty Scholarship

The Uniform Mediation Act, as currently written and approved by NCCUSL, may unnecessarily cause the destruction of self-determination in many cases. The provisions demonstrate favoritism for mediators and may result in damage to the integrity of the process. Further, the nature of the provisions restricting the parties access to the exceptions to the privilege may both increase the number of lawsuits against mediators and also encourage wrongful behavior on the part of disputants. None of this will ultimately inure to the benefit of mediation as an institution. If it is necessary to have a privilege for mediation, certain elements should …

Interfacing An 8085-Based Microcontroller: A Practical Approach To Developing Computer Applications Skills, Ahmad Zagari, Jien-Ren Li

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

In the Electronics Technology course – EE 445, students were directed to construct, troubleshoot, and interface an 8085-based microcontroller in order to control electromechanical circuits. This microprocessor, using Intel 8085A processor, was assembled from components and was interfaced to take full control of a stepper motor’s motion. In addition, the microprocessor’s application to generate and measure waveforms was examined. This manuscript attempts to describe the basic architecture of a microcontroller system, and examine its interfacing techniques as well as its applications in providing communication to the outside world.

From Gender Apartheid To Non-Sexism: The Pursuit Of Women's Rights In South Africa, Penelope Andrews Jan 2001

From Gender Apartheid To Non-Sexism: The Pursuit Of Women's Rights In South Africa, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

This article discusses the quest for women's rights in South Africa and how the transition from apartheid to democracy led to a commitment to gender equality as incorporated in South Africa's transitional and final Constitutions. This paper refers to the organizational attempts by women prior to and during the constitutional drafting process to ensure that the new Constitution embodied the aspirations and reflected the struggles for women's rights by women activists in South Africa. This article is divided into six sections. Section Two describes the legacy of apartheid for all women in South Africa. This section shows how the laws …
