Visions in Leisure and Business

Hallmark or mega-events have been widely hailed as opportunities to enhance the awareness and appeal of tourist destinations. Because hallmark or mega events such as the Olympic games hold the market potential for national and international tourism development, studies of host residents' support of the Olympic games hold special significance. The purpose of this study was to examine Atlanta, residents on their perceptions of the State of Georgia hosting the 1996 Olympic games. Pre and post Olympic comparisons of residents showed strong support for Georgia hosting the Olympic games, limited change is willingness to attend Olympic events, and statistically significant …

An Investigation Of Tourist Involvement On International Tour Type Choices, Tsung-Chiung Wu

Visions in Leisure and Business

Involvement theory derived from social judgment theory has raised great research interests for leisure scholars since 1990s. The study issues for leisure involvement range from its conceptualization, measurement, antecedent and consequence factors, building causal relations, testing variations of leisure involvement among different recreation activities, and management and marketing applications. Although several inconclusive arguments exist, leisure involvement theory provides solid bases to explain leisure participation behavior, especially in the cases of participation patterns, message processing, and decision-making patterns.

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the appropriateness of applying involvement theory on international tour type choices. Ex post Facto …

Cross-Border Shopping In Hungary: Causes And Effects, Gabor Michalko, Dallen J. Timothy

Visions in Leisure and Business

Shopping tourism in Eastern Europe has grown enormously since the 1970s, and the geopolitical changes that occurred in the late 1980s and early 90s had a major bearing on its development. Within the context of shopping tourism, this paper examines cross-border shopping trends in Hungary, which is one of the most prominent shopping destinations in the former communist bloc. After a description. of the phenomenon and its magnitude in Hungary, spatial patterns in the borderlands are considered and the probable impacts of Hungary's future admission into the European Union are explained.

Tourist Shopping Activities And Development Of Travel Sophistication, Russell K. Smith, Lorene S. Olson

Visions in Leisure and Business

An ethnographic research approach was used to investigate shopping and consumption behavior of international tourists. This research informed a model that positions a tourist's market-place activity as an evolving process that parallels and supports their advance in travel sophistication. The model illustrates that shopping and consumption may originate as a leisure-recreational pursuit for tourists but is transformed into a learning activity that facilitates their assimilation of a host culture. This, in turn, plays an important role in the tourist's development of travel self-efficacy, as well as their motivation for return trips.

The Need For Diversity In The Tourism And Hospitality Industry, Joel Frater

Visions in Leisure and Business

Examined at a macro level, there are several key factors that are likely to influence the tourism and hospitality industry. The first factor is the changing face of the American population. A second factor is the rate of growth of the tourism industry. A third, and very important factor is the extent to which the industry embraces diversity. There is a need for industries to reach out to a diverse group of customers and employees. The need for cross-cultural responsiveness and the adoption of training models is apparent. This paper examines population and travel industry data-trends as a corner stone …
