Quantum Confinement Transition In A D-Wave Superconductor, Courtney Lannert, T. Senthil, Matthew P. Fisher
Quantum Confinement Transition In A D-Wave Superconductor, Courtney Lannert, T. Senthil, Matthew P. Fisher
Physics: Faculty Publications
We study the nature of the zero-temperature phase transition between a d-wave superconductor and a Mott insulator in two dimensions. In this "quantum confinement transition", spin and charge are confined to form the electron in the Mott insulator. Within a dual formulation, direct transitions from d-wave superconductors at half-filling to insulators with spin-Peierls (as well as other) order emerge naturally. The possibility of striped superconductors is also discussed within the dual formulation. The transition is described by nodal fermions and bosonic vortices, interacting via a long-ranged statistical interaction modeled by two coupled Chern-Simons gauge fields, and the critical properties of …
Electron Spectral Function In Two-Dimensional Fractionalized Phases, Courtney Lannert, Matthew P.A. Fisher, T. Senthil
Electron Spectral Function In Two-Dimensional Fractionalized Phases, Courtney Lannert, Matthew P.A. Fisher, T. Senthil
Physics: Faculty Publications
We study the electron spectral function of various zero-temperature spin-charge separated phases in two dimensions. In these phases, the electron is not a fundamental excitation of the system, but rather “decays” into a spin-1/2 chargeless fermion (the spinon) and a spinless charge e boson (the chargon). Using low-energy effective theories for the spinons (d-wave pairing plus possible Néel order) and the chargons (condensed or quantum-disordered bosons), we explore three phases of possible relevance to the cuprate superconductors: (1) (formula presented) a fractionalized antiferromagnet where the spinons are paired into a state with long-ranged Néel order and the chargons are 1/2-filled …

Health Care Financing And Delivery In Hong Kong : What Should Be Done, Lok Sang Ho
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
In this paper, I would provide a logically consistent taxonomy of alternative health care financing avenues. I then explore the implications of these alternatives, finally establishing the conclusion that a combination of tax-financing and capped voluntary payments, supplemented by the setting of "moral hazard neutral" fees, would serve the purposes of expenditure containment, universal access to health care, and optimal resource allocation.

The World Currency Unit : Can It Work?, Lok Sang Ho
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
This paper uses the World Currency Unit framework of Ho (2000) to consider the feasibility and the benefits for a country to link its currency to the WCU. It also throws light on the workability of “global bonds” denominated in the WCU. Empirical data from Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, the UK, and South Korea are used. The data suggest that a real exchange rate concept that can be compared across nations can be built on the WCU and is a useful explanatory variable for real exports. A country that pegs its currency to the WCU is also likely …

Size Scaling Relationships In The Active Fault Networks Of Japan And Their Correlation With Gutenberg-Richter B Values, Ali Osman Öncel, Thomas H. Wilson, Osamu Nishizawa
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Fractal properties of active fault systems in Japan are evaluated and compared to Gutenberg-Richter h values Properties of the active fault network and seismicity were evaluated at 20 km intervals along three lines oriented along the length of Honshu, the main island of Japan Fractal dimensions for the active fault network are calculated using the box counting method. The box curves often reveal the presence of an abrupt transition in slope at ∼8 km scales. This transition separates linear regions in the box curves that span box sizes of 17.5 to 8.5 km and 7.75 to 2 km Power law …
Oxygen Impurities In Nial: Relaxation Effects, David Djajaputra, Bernard R. Cooper
Oxygen Impurities In Nial: Relaxation Effects, David Djajaputra, Bernard R. Cooper
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
We have used a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method to calculate the effects of oxygen impurities on the electronic structure of NiAl. Using the supercell method with a 16-atom supercell we have investigated the cases where an oxygen atom is substitutionally placed at either a nickel or an aluminum site. Full relaxation of the atoms within the supercell was allowed. We found that oxygen prefers to occupy a nickel site over an aluminum site with a site selection energy of 138 mRy (21,370 K). An oxygen atom placed at an aluminum site is found to cause a substantial relaxation of …
