The Road Less Traveled: Alternative Routes To Certification, Rita Seedorf
The Road Less Traveled: Alternative Routes To Certification, Rita Seedorf
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
Washington State has recently designed alternative routes to certification for those who have worked in the schools as paraprofessionals and those coming into the profession from another career. Alternative routes to certification along with alternative certificates are becoming increasingly popular as teacher shortages increase and public demand grows for teachers better prepared in their subject areas. When incentives such as signing bonuses and higher pay do not entice enough certified teachers in urban areas, alternative certificates are offered. In its quest for quality teachers, Washington has decided to institute three alternative routes to certification rather than issue alternative certificates to …

A University/K-12 Parnership That Works, Dianne Fields
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
As stated in the Turning Points 2000, Educating Adolescents for the 21 '1 Century, the entirety of a teachers career should be a seamless continuum of learning and development focused on student learning. Critical steps along the continuum include high-quality pre-service teacher preparation, carefully designed mentoring and induction programs. This statement only reinforces what we have been doing in a partnership between Eastern Washington University and Shaw Middle School for the past seven years. The program provides a year long experience in one school for pre-service teachers. This enables the pre-service teachers to increase their understanding of the school, its …

Diversity And School Reform, Terry Armstrong
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
For the past century, school reform has centered around political solutions. Numerous attempts have been made to improve the education of youth. Heat Tolerance Of Kentucky Bluegrass As Affected By Trinexapac-Ethyl, Neil L. Heckman, Garald Horst, Roch E. Gaussoin, Linda J. Young
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Heat accumulation during storage of sod may reach lethal temperatures within 4 days, decreasing sod quality. Treatment with trinexapac-ethyl reduces heat accumulation during sod storage. However, heat tolerance of grasses treated with trinexapacethyl has not been documented. Our objectives were to: 1) determine the lethal temperatures for Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.); and 2) identify the effect of a single application of trinexapac-ethyl on heat tolerance. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications and a two (trinexapac-ethyl vs. control) × two (cultivars) factorial arrangement of treatments. Ten days after chemical treatment, Kentucky bluegrass sprigs were exposed …
