Prostasin Is A Glycosylphosphatidylinositol-Anchored Active Serine Protease, Li-Mei Chen, Melanie L. Skinner, Steven W. Kauffman, Julie Chao, Lee Chao, Catherine D. Thaler, Karl X. Chai Jan 2001

Prostasin Is A Glycosylphosphatidylinositol-Anchored Active Serine Protease, Li-Mei Chen, Melanie L. Skinner, Steven W. Kauffman, Julie Chao, Lee Chao, Catherine D. Thaler, Karl X. Chai

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A recombinant human prostasin serine protease was expressed in several human cell lines. Subcellular fractionation showed that this serine protease is synthesized as a membrane-bound protein while a free-form prostasin is secreted into the culture medium, Prostasin was identified in nuclear and membrane fractions. Membrane-bound prostasin can be released by phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C treatment, or labeled by [H-3]ethanolamine, indicating a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchorage. A prostasin-binding protein was identified in mouse and human seminal vesicle fluid. Both the secreted and the membrane-bound prostasin were able to form a covalently linked 82-kDa complex when incubated with seminal vesicle fluid. The complex formation between …

The Marsokhod rover returned data from six stations that were used to decipher the geomorphology and geology of a region not previously visited by members of the geomorphology field team. Satellite images and simulated descent images provided information about the regional setting. The landing zone was on an alluvial apron flanking a mountain block to the west and a playa surface to the east. Rover color images, infrared spectra analysis of the mountains, and the apron surface provided insight into the rock composition of the nearby mountains. From the return data the geomorphology team interpreted the region to consist of …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Paleotopographic reconstructions based on a synthesis of published geologic information and high-resolution topography, including topographic profiles, reveal the potential existence of an enormous drainage basin/aquifer system in the eastern part of the Tharsis region during the Noachian Period. Large topographic highs formed the margin of the gigantic drainage basin. Subsequently, lavas, sediments, and volatiles partly infilled the basin, resulting in an enormous and productive regional aquifer. The stacked sequences of water-bearing strata were then deformed locally and, in places, exposed by magmatic-driven uplifts, tectonic deformation, and erosion. This basin model provides a potential source of water necessary to carve the …

Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Characterization Of The Diffusion Properties Of 17 Elements Implanted Into Silicon, H. Francois-Saint-Cyr, E. Anoshkina, F. Stevie, L. Chow, K. Richardson, D. Zhou Jan 2001

Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Characterization Of The Diffusion Properties Of 17 Elements Implanted Into Silicon, H. Francois-Saint-Cyr, E. Anoshkina, F. Stevie, L. Chow, K. Richardson, D. Zhou

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A systematic investigation of the diffusion of Be, B, Na, Mg, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Ge, Rb, and Mo in silicon has been carried out. The elements were implanted into silicon wafers as low dose impurities, and then postheat treatments of the ion-implanted samples were conducted at different temperatures for a specific time. Following the anneals, the depth profiles were obtained by secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses. A wide range of diffusion behavior has been observed for these elements. Based on differences in the depth profiles the diffusion mechanism was identified where possible. (C) …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

On April 15 and 19, 1998, two intense dust storms were generated over the Gobi desert by springtime low-pressure systems descending from the northwest. The windblown dust was detected and its evolution followed by its yellow color on SeaWiFS satellite images, routine surface-based monitoring, and through serendipitous observations. The April 15 dust cloud was recirculating, and it was removed by a precipitating weather system over east Asia. The April 19 dust cloud crossed the Pacific Ocean in 5 days, subsided to the surface along the mountain ranges between British Columbia and California, and impacted severely the optical and the concentration …

Ion Channeling Effects On The Focused Ion Beam Milling Of Cu, B. W. Kempshall, S. M. Schwarz, B. I. Prenitzer, L. A. Giannuzzi, R. B. Irwin, F. A. Stevie

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The use of focused ion beam (FIB) instruments for device modification and specimen preparation has become a mainstay in the microelectronics industry and in thin film characterization. The role of the FIB as a tool to rapidly prepare high quality transmission electron microscopy specimens is particularly significant. Special attention has been given to FIB milling of Cu and Si in the microelectronics arena. Although FIB applications involving Si have been extremely successful, it has been noted that Cu tends to present significant challenges to FIB milling because of effects such as the development of milling induced topographical features. We show …

Effect Of Spin-Orbit Interaction In Photoionization Of Bromine, H. P. Saha, Dong Lin Jan 2001

Effect Of Spin-Orbit Interaction In Photoionization Of Bromine, H. P. Saha, Dong Lin

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The partial and total photoionization cross sections from the initial P-2(3/2) ground state of atomic Br to the final Br+ P-3(1) components across the 4p(4)(D-1(2))6d,8s(P-2, D-2, F-2, S-2) autoionization resonances are presented. The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) method has been used to calculate both bound and continuum wave functions in the nonrelativistic limit. The Breit-Pauli approximation is applied to determine the effect of spin-orbit interactions in the photoionization of atomic Br with the MCHF wave function as input. Our calculated results are compared with experimental data.

Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks Jan 2001

Morphological Operations On Color Images, Lloyd J. Sartor, Arthur R. Weeks

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Morphological image processing has been widely used to process binary and grayscale images, with morphological techniques being applied to noise reduction, image enhancement, and feature detection. Relying on an ordering of the data, morphology modifies the geometrical aspects of an image: object contours in binary images and object surfaces in grayscale images. Extending morphological operators to color image processing has been problematic because it is not easy to define geometry of a vector-valued function and ordering of vectors is not straightforward We propose a new set of color morphological operators based on a combination of reduced ordering and conditional ordering …

Nanoscale P-N Junction Fabrication In Silicon Due To Controlled Dopant Electromigration, Leonid Chernyak, Mikhail Klimov Jan 2001

Nanoscale P-N Junction Fabrication In Silicon Due To Controlled Dopant Electromigration, Leonid Chernyak, Mikhail Klimov

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

An external electric field (up to 10(6) V/cm) was used for nanoscale p-n junction fabrication in Si doped with Li (Si:Li) in situ in a scanning probe microscope. Creation of nano-p-n junctions was ascribed to the thermally assisted electromigration of Li+ ions. Tunneling I-V spectroscopy provided evidence for a conversion of the electrical conductivity type from p to n. A local temperature increase during an electric field-induced p-n junction fabrication was estimated to be up to 160 degreesC.

Possible Roles Of Protein Kinase A In Cell Motility And Excystation Of The Early Diverging Eukaryote Giardia Lamblia, Erika S. Abel, Barbara J. Davids, Liza D. Robles, Clarence E. Loflin, Frances D. Gillin, Ratna Chakrabarti Jan 2001

Possible Roles Of Protein Kinase A In Cell Motility And Excystation Of The Early Diverging Eukaryote Giardia Lamblia, Erika S. Abel, Barbara J. Davids, Liza D. Robles, Clarence E. Loflin, Frances D. Gillin, Ratna Chakrabarti

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Since little is known of how the primitive protozoan parasite, Giardia lamblia, senses and responds to its changing environment, we characterized a giardial protein kinase A (gPKA) catalytic subunit with unusual subcellular localization. Sequence analysis of the 1080-base pair open reading frame shows 48% amino acid identity with the cyclic AMP-dependent kinase from Euglena gracilis, Northern analysis indicated a 1.28-kilobase pair transcript at relatively constant concentrations during growth and encystation, gPKA is autophosphorylated, although amino acid residues corresponding to Thr-197 and Ser-338 of human protein kinase A (PKA) that are important for autophosphorylation are absent, Kinetic analysis of the recombinant …

Mathematical Model For The Irradiance Probability Density Function Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Turbulent Media, M. A. Al-Habash, L. C. Andrews, R. L. Phillips Jan 2001

Mathematical Model For The Irradiance Probability Density Function Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Turbulent Media, M. A. Al-Habash, L. C. Andrews, R. L. Phillips

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We develop a model for the probability density function (pdf) of the irradiance fluctuations of an optical wave propagating through a turbulent medium. The model is a two-parameter distribution that is based on a doubly stochastic theory of scintillation that assumes that small-scale irradiance fluctuations are modulated by large-scale irradiance fluctuations of the propagating wave, both governed by independent gamma distributions. The resulting irradiance pdf takes the form of a generalized K distribution that we term the gamma-gamma distribution. The two parameters of the gamma-gamma pdf are determined using a recently published theory of scintillation, using only values of the …

Variations In The Onset Diameter For Martian Layered Ejecta Morphologies And Their Implications For Subsurface Volatile Reservoirs, Nadine G. Barlow, John Koroshetz, James M. Dohm Jan 2001

Variations In The Onset Diameter For Martian Layered Ejecta Morphologies And Their Implications For Subsurface Volatile Reservoirs, Nadine G. Barlow, John Koroshetz, James M. Dohm

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We investigated regional variations in the onset diameter of craters displaying a single layer ejecta morphology within +/- 30 degrees latitude using Viking imagery. Our results generally agree with those of previous studies which show onset diameters of 5 to 6 km in the equatorial region, but we have identified localized regions with unusually small onset diameters. The largest region is located in Solis and Thaumasia Planae. The 3-5 km onset diameter range in this area indicates a near-surface ice-rich reservoir (depth similar to 110 m). This unusual concentration of near-surface ice may have resulted from magmatic-driven uplifts associated with …

Liquid Crystal-Based Self-Aligning 2 X 2 Wavelength Routing Module, Sarun Sumriddetchkajorn, Nabeel A. Riza, Deepak K. Sengupta

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A novel retroreflective polarization insensitive 2x2 fiber optic switch (FOS) using programmable quarter waveplates (QWPs) is introduced. Key features include low polarization sensitivity and a self-aligning module via a compact retroreflective structure. A proof of concept 2x2 FOS using ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC)-based (PIPS) Laboratory programmable QWPs is demonstrated, providing a response speed of 394 mus and a low 10.14-mW total electrical power consumption for the and worst case. Multiwavelength switch operation in the 1550-nm wave length region indicates an average optical loss of 6.02 dB with a +/-0.18-dB loss fluctuation, and an optical coherent crosstalk of -21.6 dB with …

Strategic Interdependence In Organizations: Deconglomeration And Marketing Strategy, P. Rajan Varadarjan, Satish Jayachandran, J. Chris White Jan 2001

Strategic Interdependence In Organizations: Deconglomeration And Marketing Strategy, P. Rajan Varadarjan, Satish Jayachandran, J. Chris White

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Although strategy exists at multiple levels in a firm (corporate, business, and functional), there is a dearth of research in marketing literature that focuses on the dependency among strategy at different levels. The authors address this issue by examining the relationship between deconglomeration and marketing strategy. Deconglomeration refers to the divestiture behavior of a conglomerate firm and the transformation of its business portfolio from one that is largely composed of several unrelated businesses to one composed of fewer and related businesses. Drawing on multiple theoretical perspectives, the authors propose a conceptual model delineating the environmental and organizational drivers of deconglomeration …

Photoelectron Spectrometry Of Atomic Scandium In The Region Of The 3p - > 3d Giant Resonance, S. B. Whitfield, K. Kehoe, R. Wehlitz, M. O. Krause, C. D. Caldwell Jan 2001

Photoelectron Spectrometry Of Atomic Scandium In The Region Of The 3p - > 3d Giant Resonance, S. B. Whitfield, K. Kehoe, R. Wehlitz, M. O. Krause, C. D. Caldwell

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A determination of the relative partial photoionization cross sections of the 3d and 4s main lines and associated satellite lines of atomic scandium in the region of the 3p-- > nd,ms excitations has been carried out using electron spectrometry in conjunction with monochromatized synchrotron radiation. The superior resolution inherent in these measurements has revealed additional structure not previously seen in earlier experimental work, highlighting the rich and complex structure of this relatively simple open-shell atom. Relative intensities and binding energies of the 3p photolines are also reported. A comparison with recent many-body perturbation theory calculations in LS coupling shows only marginal …

Practical Experience Using A Computational Model For The Design Of Heterogeneous Distributed Software, T. L. Williams, R. J. Parsons Jan 2001

Practical Experience Using A Computational Model For The Design Of Heterogeneous Distributed Software, T. L. Williams, R. J. Parsons

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Heterogeneous cluster environments are becoming an increasing popular platform for executing parallel applications. Efficient heterogeneous programs must account for the differences inherent in such an environment. We propose the HBSP(1) model of computation as a framework for developing applications for heterogeneous clusters of workstations. The utility of the model is demonstrated through the design and analysis of the scatter and one-to-all broadcast algorithms. Extensive experimentation illustrates the benefits of using the model for heterogeneous program development. By hiding the non-uniformity of the underlying system, the HBSP(1) model provides a framework that embraces the heterogeneity of the underlying system.

Cervantes And The Reinvention Of The Picaresque Narrative In The Novelas Ejemplares, Mark J. Mascia Jan 2001

Cervantes And The Reinvention Of The Picaresque Narrative In The Novelas Ejemplares, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

This article presents an analysis of a number of stories in Miguel de Cervantes' Novelas Ejemplares, illustrating how he experimented with and altered the picaresque narrative by openly incorporating many elements of the genre into this work. This article shows how Cervantes is not a purely canonical picaresque author, but rather a quasi- or semi-picaresque writer, inventing what might be called Cervantine picaresque literature.
