Dc Power-Bus Design Using Fdtd Modeling With Dispersive Media And Surface Mount Technology Components, Xiaoning Ye, Marina Koledintseva, Min Li, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

DC power-bus modeling in high-speed digital design using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is demonstrated herein. The dispersive character of the dielectric layers used in printed circuit board substrates is taken into account in this study. In particular, FR-4 is considered. The complex permittivity of the dielectric is approximated by a Debye model. A wide-band frequency response (100 MHz-5 GHz) is obtained through a single FDTD simulation. Good agreement is achieved between the modeled and measured results for a typical dc power-bus structure with multiple surface mount technology (SMT) decoupling capacitors placed on the printed circuit board (PCB). The FDTD …

Emi Mitigation With Multilayer Power-Bus Stacks And Via Stitching Of Reference Planes, Xiaoning Ye, David M. Hockanson, Min Li, Yong Ren, Wei Cui, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

General methods for reducing printed circuit board (PCB) emissions over a broad band of high frequencies are necessary to meet EMI requirements, as processors become faster and more powerful. One mechanism by which EMI can be coupled off a PCB or multichip module (MCM) structure is from high-frequency fringing electric fields on the dc power and reference planes at the substrate periphery An approach for EMI mitigation by stitching multiple ground planes together along the periphery of multilayer PCB power-bus stacks with closely spaced vias is reported and quantified in this paper. Power-bus noise induced EMI and coupling from the …

The New Techie: The Times They Are A-Changing, And Techies Along With Them, Melodee Landis

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

It’s great to be a former English teacher working in the world of technology — although it hasn’t always been pretty. When I first started working in technology (in the late 1980s), techies greeted me with wary disdain. I didn’t know the lingo, I didn’t live to be the first to know about the next hardware release, and my idea of a good time on Saturday night was to spend time with a warm, breathing being, not a keyboard and a screen. Furthermore, I was much too verbal, too in-your-face. I lacked that certain je ne c’est quoi, that cool …

Service Learning: Discovering Effective Communication Strategies By Emphasizing The Community's Perspective, Elizabeth Oppe Nov 2001

Service Learning: Discovering Effective Communication Strategies By Emphasizing The Community's Perspective, Elizabeth Oppe

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Service learning is a broadly defined term that may encompass a spectrum of projects and course work ranging from acts of charity to activism for social change. "The aim of service learning is always to heighten awareness in our communities that we have the capacity to both learn from and serve each other... and work toward a more just and egalitarian society" (bttp://www.invcol.pdx.edulic.htm). Another description of service learning from Brevard Community College's The Power (1994) explains that, for many community organizations, students augment service delivery, meet crucial human needs, and provide a basis for future citizen support. The Power depicts …

High-Pressure Elastic Properties Of Major Materials Of Earth's Mantle From First Principles, Bijaya B. Karki, Lars Stixrude, Renata M. Wentzcovitch

Faculty Publications

The elasticity of materials is important for our understanding of processes ranging from brittle failure, to flexure, to the propagation of elastic waves. Seismologically revealed structure of the Earth's mantle, including the radial (one-dimensional) profile, lateral heterogeneity, and anisotropy are determined largely by the elasticity of the materials that make up this region. Despite its importance to geophysics, our knowledge of the elasticity of potentially relevant mineral phases at conditions typical of the Earth's mantle is still limited: Measuring the elastic constants at elevated pressure-temperature conditions in the laboratory remains a major challenge. Over the past several years, another approach …

Micromagnetics Simulation Of Deep-Submicron Supermalloy Disks, Scott Whittenburg Nov 2001

Micromagnetics Simulation Of Deep-Submicron Supermalloy Disks, Scott Whittenburg

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The results of recent micromagnetic simulations of deep submicron supermalloy disks are presented. A recent experimental measurement of the hysteresis and magnetic domain structure in supermalloy disks with diameters ranging from 55 to 500 nm and thickness ranging from 6 to 15 nm has been reported. Our micromagnetic simulations show remarkable agreement with the experimental hysteresis loops. The simulation results show that for thin or small diameter disks a single magnetic domain exists with all spins aligned. The hysteresis loop represents free rotation of these spins. For larger diameter disks or as the thickness increases the hysteresis loops change shape …

Concentration Gradient, Diffusion, And Flow Through Open Porous Medium Near Percolation Threshold Via Computer Simulations, Ras B. Pandey, J.F. Gettrust, D. Stauffer

Faculty Publications

The interacting lattice gas model is used to simulate fluid flow through an open percolating porous medium with the fluid entering at the source-end and leaving from the opposite end. The shape of the steady-state concentration profile and therefore the gradient field depends on the porosity (p). The root mean square (rms) displacements of fluid and its constituents (tracers) show a drift power-law behavior, R∝t in the asymptotic regime (t→∞). The flux current density (j) is found to scale with the porosity according to, j∝(Δp)β with Δp …

Host-Switching Does Not Circumvent The Ni-Based Defence Of The Ni Hyperaccumulator Streptanthus Polygaloides (Brassicaceae), Micheal A. Davis, Robert S. Boyd, James H. Cane

Faculty Publications

Elevated tissue concentrations of metals have been shown to defend metal-hyperaccumulating plants against both herbivores and pathogens. Tolerance of metal-based defences presents a challenge to herbivores, because heavy metals cannot be degraded or metabolized. One strategy that herbivores can employ to counter high-metal defences is dietary dilution, or host switching. Highly mobile herbivores are most likely to use this strategy, but less mobile lepidopteran larvae can also Improve their performance on toxic hosts if early instar development occurs on more favourable hosts. We examined the effects of host switching on growth and survival of a generalist folivore. Specifically, we tested …

Electronic Discovery And The Litigation Matrix, Martin H. Redish Nov 2001

Electronic Discovery And The Litigation Matrix, Martin H. Redish

Duke Law Journal

The impact of the technological revolution on the operation of the discovery system in the federal courts has been dramatic. The enormous increase in storage capacity and communication that the use of computers in the corporate world has brought about has correspondingly increased both the burdens and stakes of the discovery process. This Article considers the extent to which these dramatic practical changes have created a need to develop a legal framework especially for the discovery of electronically stored information. Because the burdens of electronic discovery are likely to be substantially more severe than those involved in traditional discovery, the …

Would The Kroger Rule Survive The Ali’S Proposed Revision Of § 1367?, Edward A. Hartnett

Duke Law Journal

Supplemental jurisdiction has been a treacherous area over the past decade. Previously, supplemental jurisdiction-then generally called pendent or ancillary jurisdiction-had been left nearly entirely to judicial development, but in 1989 the Supreme Court criticized several of its own prior cases for failing to make a "specific examina- tion of jurisdictional statutes" to determine whether Congress had authorized the exercise of jurisdiction.' Although the Court stated that it had "no intent to limit or impair" these already established cases, it declared that it would not extend them. It acknowledged that "the scope of jurisdiction conferred by a particular statute can of …

Adapting Forces To A New Era: Ten Transforming Concepts, Hans Binnendijk, Richard L. Kugler Nov 2001

Adapting Forces To A New Era: Ten Transforming Concepts, Hans Binnendijk, Richard L. Kugler

Defense Horizons

A key Department of Defense goal is to build highly capable forces whose mastery of high-tech warfighting will allow decisive victories against new threats and well-armed opponents in future operations. A set of new operational concepts, many of which have surfaced in the ongoing defense strategy review, may facilitate this goal. They focus on rapid and decisive operations in distant theaters rather than on homeland defense. As generic concepts for future warfighting, they offer valuable insights on combat capabilities that should be acquired. Before these principles can be adopted, they must be scrutinized on their individual merits and integrated to …

Code Blue! Ambulance Manufacturing Specifications May Pre-Empt State Common Law Claims, Michael J. Denning Nov 2001

Code Blue! Ambulance Manufacturing Specifications May Pre-Empt State Common Law Claims, Michael J. Denning

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment seeks to apply contemporary pre-emption jurisprudence to the area of federal purchasing specifications. The piece first lays the foundation of pre-emption, and more specifically discusses its inception and maturation, and then provides an analysis of how courts should apply these principles today. Next, the piece introduces federal purchasing specifications, specifically the specification governing the government's acquisition of ambulances. The comment argues that because the specification was written to provide federal uniformity to the ambulance manufacturing field, any state claim seeking to hold a manufacturer to a higher standard than that written into the specification should be pre-empted through …

Malnutrition In Children With Congenital Heart Defects, Poothirikovil Venugopalan, Felix O. Akinbami, Khalid M. Al-Hinai, Ajit K. Agarwal Nov 2001

Malnutrition In Children With Congenital Heart Defects, Poothirikovil Venugopalan, Felix O. Akinbami, Khalid M. Al-Hinai, Ajit K. Agarwal

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of malnutrition in children with congenital heart defects in a hospital outpatient setting. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-two children with congenital heart defects (patients), and an equal number of children with innocent cardiac murmurs (controls) attending the Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman from 1997 to 1998 were prospectively studied. Weight, height and head circumference were used for evaluation of nutritional status. Patients and controls were categorized into acute malnutrition (weight <3rd percentile for age, and height >3rd centile), and chronic malnutrition (weight and height <3rd centile), based on the National Centre for Health Statistics standards. Children with symptomatic congenital heart defects (Group I, number = 73) were also compared with those without symptoms (Group II, number = 79). RESULTS: The study patients showed a higher frequency of both acute (27%) and chronic (24%) malnutrition (p<0.01). Children in Group I had a significant reduction in weight (p<0.01), height (p=0.02) and head circumference (p<0.01) compared to controls, however for those in Group II the differences were not significant. Acute malnutrition was higher in both groups, 31% (p<0.01) and 16% (p=0.04), whilst chronic malnutrition was significantly higher only in Group I, 31% (p<0.01). Infants in Group I were more frequently affected (33/45) compared to older children (13/28; p=0.02). CONCLUSION: Malnutrition remains a problem among children with congenital heart defects, especially in those with either heart failure or cyanosis, and symptomatic infants are the worst affected. Greater attention is required in the dietary management, early diagnosis and intervention to restore normal growth.
