Ktp-Laser And Fibrin Glue For Treatment Of Fistulae In Ano, Aws S. Salim, Talal M. Ahmed Nov 2001

Ktp-Laser And Fibrin Glue For Treatment Of Fistulae In Ano, Aws S. Salim, Talal M. Ahmed

Saudi Medical Journal

Fistulae-in-ano remains a significant surgical problem due to the limitations pertinent to accurate assessment and the magnitude, shortcomings and side effects of the various procedures currently employed for their management. Six consecutive fistulae-in-ano patients (males, age range 30 to 58 years) were successfully treated by KTP laser (20-watt continuous aim for 20 to 30 seconds delivering a total energy of 400 to 600 joules) with rapid solidification fibrin glue then followed up for 3 months without recurrence. This approach offers a simple, expeditious and effective treatment for fistulae-in-ano thereby overcoming many of the restrictions associated with other methods.

Ipsilateral Dislocation Of The Shoulder And Elbow, Mohammed R. Khan, Tarek M. Mirdad Nov 2001

Ipsilateral Dislocation Of The Shoulder And Elbow, Mohammed R. Khan, Tarek M. Mirdad

Saudi Medical Journal

Ipsilateral dislocation of shoulder and elbow joints is a rare injury. Only 2 such cases have been reported in the English literature. We report a case of a 35-year-old man involved in a road traffic accident under the influence of alcohol. He sustained posterior left elbow and anterior left shoulder dislocation with minimally displaced greater tuberosity fracture. He also had partial median nerve palsy. Under intramuscular pethidine and intravenous diazepam, close reduction of elbow followed by shoulder was carried out. At 2 months, median nerve function returned to normal. At 3 months, almost full elbow and shoulder joint movement returned. …

Swimming Mechanics And Behavior Of The Shallow-Water Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol, Mark R. Patterson, Roger Mann Nov 2001

Swimming Mechanics And Behavior Of The Shallow-Water Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol, Mark R. Patterson, Roger Mann

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Although squid are among the most versatile swimmers and rely on a unique locomotor system, little is known about the swimming mechanics and behavior of most squid, especially those that swim at low speeds in inshore waters. Shallow-water brief squid Lolliguncula brevis, ranging in size from 1.8 to 8.9 cm. in dorsal mantle length (DML), were placed in flumes and videotaped, and the data were analyzed using motion-analysis equipment. Flow visualization and force measurement experiments were also performed in water tunnels. Mean critical swimming speeds (Ucrit) ranged from 15.3 to 22.8 cm s-1, and mean …

Blood-Squirting Variability In Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma), Wade Sherbrooke, George Middendorf, C. Guyer Nov 2001

Blood-Squirting Variability In Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma), Wade Sherbrooke, George Middendorf, C. Guyer

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Variability within the genus Phrynosoma in the occurrence of ocular-sinus blood-squirting, reportedly a defense used in canid encounters, is reviewed from the literature. Six species have been reported to squirt blood, and seven species remain unreported. Five of the latter species were tested in dog trials; one exhibited blood-squirting (Phrynosoma hernandesi), one exhibited precursor behaviors but failed to squirt blood (Phrynosoma ditmarsi), and three yielded negative results (Phrynosoma mcallii, Phrynosoma modestum, and Phrynosoma platyrhinos). Instances of blood-squirting in response to human encounters were collected and largely support the negative results for the three species P. mcallii, P. modestum, and P. …

God, Man, And Law: Of Rights And Responsibilities, E. Thomas Ryder Nov 2001

God, Man, And Law: Of Rights And Responsibilities, E. Thomas Ryder

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the evolving construction, modifications and improvements made to the "wall of separation between church and state." Initially, the comment presents an analysis of the unifying religious themes of individual responsibilities, which underlie our rights, as a reason why religion is important, even in schools. The author then reviews the historical origins and early development of the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses, and examines modem Establishment Clause jurisprudence. The comment then examines the Cleveland, Ohio elementary school voucher program, applying current Establishment Clause jurisprudence. The conclusion then recommends embracing anew the dynamic role of religion in United States …

Is There No Simple Battery Under Illinois Law?, Azhar J. Minhas Nov 2001

Is There No Simple Battery Under Illinois Law?, Azhar J. Minhas

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This piece argues that judicial interpretation of 720 ILCS 5/12-4(b)(8) (1997) of the Illinois Criminal Code, the statute which enhances simple battery to aggravated battery, has opened the door for the abuse of prosecutorial discretion in applying the statute and has led the courts away from its true legislative intent. Specifically, the application of the statute has been overbroad and courts' interpretations of the legislative intent have been far-reaching. Through statutory analysis and the consideration of case law, the author explores the judicial expansion of section (b)(8) and argues for words of limitation in the statute that will help to …

Practicing Law In The Global Economy, Nancy L. Kaszak Nov 2001

Practicing Law In The Global Economy, Nancy L. Kaszak

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This essay is an edited version of a lecture given by Ms. Kaszak as part of the Francis X. Riley Lecture series at the Northern Illinois University College of Law. It begins by discussing the development of the global economy as resulting from technological developments, such as the personal computer, with the ability to connect globally via the internet, that combine with the relative ease of transporting goods and services across borders making the global economy a reality. It develops the global enterprise as the natural evolution of business in the redefined global economy. The piece then looks at the …

Should The Government Be Allowed To Engage In Racial, Sexual, Or Other Acts Of Discrimination?, Walter E. Block, Roy Whitehead

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Arkansas law provides scholarship funds to students who meet specified academic criteria. This article examines the constitutional implications of making direct monetary payments to non-secular schools. It analyzes this practice in light of the Establishment Clause, and claims disparate impact discrimination under current administration of the scholarship program. The merits of a private cause of action under §1983 are addressed. The article concludes with the Libertarian perspective of the issues raised.
