Profile Combinatorics For Fragment Selection In Comparative Protein Structure Modeling, Deacon Sweeney, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer Nov 2001

Profile Combinatorics For Fragment Selection In Comparative Protein Structure Modeling, Deacon Sweeney, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer

Kno.e.sis Publications

Sequencing of the human genome was a great stride towards modeling cellular complexes, massive systems whose key players are proteins and DNA. A major bottleneck limiting the modeling process is structure and function annotation for the new genes. Contemporary protein structure prediction algorithms represent the sequence of every protein of known structure with a profile to which the profile of a protein sequence of unknown structure is compared for recognition. We propose a novel approach to increase the scope and resolution of protein structure profiles. Our technique locates equivalent regions among the members of a structurally similar fold family, and …

Beggar-Thy-Neighbor Advertising: Theory And Application To Generic Commodity Promotion Programs, Jennifer S. James, Julian M. Alston, John W. Freebairn Nov 2001

Beggar-Thy-Neighbor Advertising: Theory And Application To Generic Commodity Promotion Programs, Jennifer S. James, Julian M. Alston, John W. Freebairn

Agribusiness

Profits from generic advertising by a producer group often come partly at the expense of producers of closely related commodities. The resulting tendency toward excessive advertising is exacerbated by check-off funding. To analyze this beggar-thy-neighbor behavior we compare a scenario where different producer groups cooperate and choose their advertising expenditures jointly to maximize the sum of profits across the groups, and a scenario where they optimize independently. In an illustrative example using 1998 data for U.S. beef and pork, the noncooperatively chosen expenditure on beef and pork advertising is more than three times the cooperative optimum.

Polygonal Chains Cannot Lock In 4d, Roxana Cocan, Joseph O'Rourke Nov 2001

Polygonal Chains Cannot Lock In 4d, Roxana Cocan, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We prove that, in all dimensions d ≥ 4, every simple open polygonal chain and every tree may be straightened, and every simple closed polygonal chain may be convexified. These reconfigurations can be achieved by algorithms that use polynomial time in the number of vertices, and result in a polynomial number of “moves.” These results contrast to those known for d = 2, where trees can “lock,” and for d = 3, where open and closed chains can lock.

Asymmetric Warming Over Coastal California And Its Impact On The Premium Wine Industry, Ramakrishna R. Nemani, Michael A. White, Daniel R. Cayan, Gregory V. Jones, Steven W. Running, Joseph C. Coughlan, David L. Peterson Nov 2001

Asymmetric Warming Over Coastal California And Its Impact On The Premium Wine Industry, Ramakrishna R. Nemani, Michael A. White, Daniel R. Cayan, Gregory V. Jones, Steven W. Running, Joseph C. Coughlan, David L. Peterson

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Climatic changes over coastal California from 1951 to 1997 may have benefited the premium wine industry, as seen in higher quality wines and larger grape yields. Observed temperature warming trends were asymmetric, with greatest warming at night and during spring. Warming was associated with large increases in eastern Pacific sea surface temperatures (SST) and amounts of atmospheric water vapor. Although the average annual temperature warming trend was modest (1.13°C/47 yr), there was a 20 d reduction in frost occurrence and a 65 d increase in frost-free growing season length. In the Napa and Sonoma valleys, warmer winter and spring temperatures …

FLUXNET is a global network of micrometeorological flux measurement sites that measure the exchanges of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and energy between the biosphere and atmosphere. At present over 140 sites are operating on a long–term and continuous basis. Vegetation under study includes temperate conifer and broadleaved (deciduous and evergreen) forests, tropical and boreal forests, crops, grasslands, chaparral, wetlands, and tundra. Sites exist on five continents and their latitudinal distribution ranges from 70°N to 30°S.

FLUXNET has several primary functions. First, it provides infrastructure for compiling, archiving, and distributing carbon, water, and energy flux measurement, and meteorological, plant, and soil …

Hubble Space Telescope Wfpc2 Imaging Of Cassiopeia A, R. A. Fesen, J. A. Morse, R. A. Chevalier, K. J. Borkowski, C. L. Gerardy

Dartmouth Scholarship

The young galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A was imaged with Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope through filters selected to capture the complete velocity range of the remnant's main shell in several emission lines. The primary lines detected, along with the specific WFPC2 filters used, were [O III] λλ4959, 5007 (F450W), [N II] λ6583 (F658N), [S II] λλ6716, 6731 + [O II] λλ7319, 7330 + [O I] λλ6300, 6364 (F675W), and [S III] λλ9069, 9532 (F850LP). About three-quarters of the remnant's 4' diameter main shell was imaged with all four filters in three WFPC2 pointings, …

Running Aground On The (Shoal) Waters Of The United States: The Supreme Court Invalidates The Migratory Bird Rule, William F. Northrip

Missouri Law Review

For the better part of the last fifty years, the Commerce Clause provided a safe harbor for congressional legislation. However, the legislative landscape began to change with the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Lopez. For the first time in nearly sixty years, an act of Congress was invalidated as exceeding the authority granted to Congress by the commerce Clause. As courts applied the stricter standard announced in Lopez, some regulations began to founder under the newly heightened scrutiny. Among the regulations that struggled in these rough waters was 33 C.F.R. § 328.3, the United States Army Corps of …

John Wilkes And The Enlightenment, Stephen Carruthers Nov 2001

John Wilkes And The Enlightenment, Stephen Carruthers

Masters

Based on the absence of a substantial political philosophy and a scandalous reputation, modern assessments of John Wilkes have tended to marginalise his role in the development of radical political ideas in England in the 1760s and 1770s. This evaluation is reassessed in the context of an analysis of Wilkes’s collaboration with Charles Churchill on the North Briton and his political writings of the period, in particular his Introduction to the History of England (1768). Furthermore, Wilkes enjoyed extensive and prolonged contact with the leading continental philosophers of the period, and in particular d’Holbach, Diderot, Suard, Helvétius, and Chastellux, which …

Compelled Statements From Police Officers And Garrity Immunity, Steven D. Clymer Nov 2001

Compelled Statements From Police Officers And Garrity Immunity, Steven D. Clymer

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, Professor Steven Clymer describes the problem created when police departments require officers suspected of misconduct to answer internal affairs investigators' questions or face job termination. Relying on the Supreme Court's decision in Garrity v. New Jersey, courts treat such compelled statements as immunized testimony. That treatment not only renders such a statement inadmissible in a criminal prosecution of the suspect police officer, it also may require the prosecution to shoulder the daunting and sometimes insurmountable burden of demonstrating that its physical evidence, witness testimony, and strategic decisionmaking are untainted by the statement. Because police internal affairs …

Nearly Forgotten Supervisory Power: The Wrench To Retaining The Miranda Warnings, The, Nathan E. Ross

Missouri Law Review

This Comment addresses the supervisory power generally, and it specifically focuses on how the existence of the Court’s supervisory power jurisprudence created a conundrum for the Rehnquist Court’s attempt to preserve the Miranda warnings. Part II traces the history and development of the supervisory power as an independent basis for decision and the alleged sources of this power. Part III analyzes the Court’s decision in Dickerson v. United States, including Justice Scalia’s dissent, within the context of Miranda and Section 3501. Finally, Part IV discusses why the Court chose to constitutionalize the Miranda warnings, instead of invoking it supervisory power, …

Crime Of Dispassion: Eighth Circuit (Mis)Applies Deshaney In Failing To Hold State Employees Accountable To The Children They Protect, Bryan R. Berry

Missouri Law Review

This Note reviews the legal landscape of Fourteenth Amendment substantive due process theory promulgated by the Supreme Court and discusses the importance of the landmark decision in DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services in that context. Next, this Note discusses the treatment of DeShaney by the circuit courts, focusing on two exceptions to DeShaney’s analysis that have been carved out by many courts. This Note then reviews the decision in McMullen, and argues that the court of appeals improperly applied DeShaney to the facts in McMullen and that, in any event, DeShaney is an unfortunate extension of an …

Antitrust Decisions And Legislative Intent, David F. Shores Nov 2001

Antitrust Decisions And Legislative Intent, David F. Shores

Missouri Law Review

While recent decisions leave no doubt that the Court has revised its view concerning the purpose or goals of the antitrust laws, exactly when the revisionist period began is less clear. Continental T.V., Inc. v. GTE Sylvania Inc., was decided in the 1976-77 term. In overruling its decision in United States v. Arnold Schwinn & Co., decided just ten years earlier, the Court relied heavily on the writing of Robert Bork. Bock since has become the leading advocate for the new antitrust thinking. The 1976-77 Supreme court term seems to be a reasonable point of departure. Thus, the article will …

A Disengaging Metal Spike And Putting Green Quality, C. Jayne Brahler, Joe Macgowan, Marjorie Kapper, Katie Murphy, Mike Pequignot, Cristi Seidelson, Vicki Denlinger, Carrie Crites

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Over the past few years, some disadvantages to alternative spikes have surfaced. The amount of damage to putting surfaces is in question, but the damage may not be noticed immediately, as it is with the conventional 8-mm length metal spike. The present study questions the effect of alternative spikes on putting green quality and ball roll.
