Mechanical, Geometrical, And Electrical Characterization Of Silicon Membranes For Open Stencil Masks, E. Sossna, A. Degen, I. W. Rangelow, M. Drzik, P. Hudek, T. E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Silicon membranes are used for stencil masks which are key to charged particle projection lithography, particularly for ion projection lithography, electron beam projection. Quantitative and qualitative determination of the mechanical properties of the true thickness, thickness variations (morphology), electrical conductivity and stress is critical to the development of next generation lithography. The metrology setup includes high accuracy thickness, refractive index and electrical conductivity measurement based on infrared variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, thickness variation characterization based on the Fizeau interferometric scheme and mechanical stress evaluation based on a novel double bulging technique.

Ananke In Herodotus, Rosaria Vignolo Munson Nov 2001

Ananke In Herodotus, Rosaria Vignolo Munson

Classics Faculty Works

This paper examines Herodotus' use of words of the ananke family in order to determine which external of internal constraints the historian represents as affecting the causality of events. M. Ostwald's "Ananke in Thucydides" (1988) provides a foundation for examining the more restricted application of these terms in Herodotus (85 occurrences vs. 161 in Thucydides). In Herodotus, divine necessity (absent in Thucydides) refers to the predictable results of human wrongdoings more often than to a force constraining human choices. This represents an especially ambiguous Herodotean category, however, and is expressed by a wider range of terms than those with ananke-stems. …

Monitoring Subsurface Drainage Flow At Remote Locations, Stephen R. Workman, Stephen F. Higgins, Scott A. Shearer Nov 2001

Monitoring Subsurface Drainage Flow At Remote Locations, Stephen R. Workman, Stephen F. Higgins, Scott A. Shearer

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Laboratory evaluations and field results are presented for a slotted weir used to measure discharge from subsurface drains. The head–discharge curve for the vertical slot is a simple power function with an exponent of 1.5. There was excellent agreement (r2 > 0.99 and 1:1 slope) between predicted and observed discharge in laboratory testing of 12 test weirs representing five slot widths. The primary advantages of the vertical slot weir are its simplicity, ease of maintenance, and ability to measure small flow rates. Disadvantages include a tendency for the slot to close a small amount over time as a result of …

Practical Issues For The Application Of High-Performance Concrete To Highway Structures, John J. Myers, Yumin Yang Nov 2001

Practical Issues For The Application Of High-Performance Concrete To Highway Structures, John J. Myers, Yumin Yang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, the advantages of high-performance concrete (HPC) have been well documented. Among others, these advantages include enhanced design flexibility and improved durability performance that results in reduced maintenance costs and an increased service life. Despite these obvious benefits, the implementation of HPC has been very slow. This can be attributed to several factors including the uncertainty related to current design codes and a lack of familiarity of designers and contractors with practices and requirements for proper design and construction of high-performance concrete structures. This paper introduces and discusses several fundamental issues that affect the implementation of HPC and …

Thermal Stability Of Isolated And Complexed Ga Vacancies In Gan Bulk Crystals, K. Saarinen, T. Suski, I. Grzegory, David C. Look Nov 2001

Thermal Stability Of Isolated And Complexed Ga Vacancies In Gan Bulk Crystals, K. Saarinen, T. Suski, I. Grzegory, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

We have applied positron annihilation spectroscopy to show that 2-MeV electron irradiation at 300 K creates primary Ga vacancies in GaN with an introduction rate of 1 cm-1. The Ga vacancies recover in long-range migration processes at 500–600 K with an estimated migration energy of 1.5 (2) eV. Since the native Ga vacancies in as-grown GaN survive up to much higher temperatures (1300–1500 K), we conclude that they are stabilized by forming complexes with oxygen impurities. The estimated binding energy of 2.2 (4) eV of such complexes is in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculations.

Electrical Characterization Of 1.8 Mev Proton-Bombarded Zno, F. D. Auret, S. A. Goodman, M. Hayes, M. J. Legodi, H. A. Van Laarhoven, David C. Look Nov 2001

Electrical Characterization Of 1.8 Mev Proton-Bombarded Zno, F. D. Auret, S. A. Goodman, M. Hayes, M. J. Legodi, H. A. Van Laarhoven, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

We report on the electrical characterization of single-crystal ZnO and Au Schottky contacts formed thereon before and after bombarding them with 1.8 MeV protons. From capacitance–voltage measurements, we found that ZnO is remarkably resistant to high-energy proton bombardment and that each incident proton removes about two orders of magnitude less carriers than in GaN. Deep level transient spectroscopy indicates a similar effect: the two electron traps detected are introduced in extremely low rates. One possible interpretation of these results is that the primary radiation-induced defects in ZnO may be unstable at room temperature and anneal out without leaving harmful defects …

When Lawyers Were Serial Killers: Nineteenth Century Visions Of Good Moral Character, Roger Roots Nov 2001

When Lawyers Were Serial Killers: Nineteenth Century Visions Of Good Moral Character, Roger Roots

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article provides a historical look at the meaning of the phrase "good moral character" in the context of the fitness of an individual for the practice of law. Going back to the 1700s, the author traces the origins of fitness requirements. This historical timeline uncovers a shockingly violent period when engaging in duels with pistols seemed to be an unwritten requirement to be considered a gentleman and a lawyer.

Articles

We describe the target selection and resulting properties of a spectroscopic sample of luminous, red galaxies (LRG) from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). These galaxies are selected on the basis of color and magnitude to yield a sample of luminous, intrinsically red galaxies that extends fainter and further than the main flux-limited portion of the SDSS galaxy spectroscopic sample. The sample is designed to impose a passively-evolving luminosity and rest- frame color cut to a redshift of 0.38. Additional, yet more luminous, red galaxies are included to a redshift of 0.5. Approximately 12 of these …

"I Only Wish I Had Known It Sooner." Education Students' Changing Conceptions Of Learning Strategies., Irene Styles, Susan Beltman, Alex Radloff Nov 2001

"I Only Wish I Had Known It Sooner." Education Students' Changing Conceptions Of Learning Strategies., Irene Styles, Susan Beltman, Alex Radloff

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

One of the cornerstones of student learning is the ability to use appropriate learning strategies. Awareness and orchestration of learning strategies are central to self-regulation of learning. Effective learners have a range of strategies and use them appropriately for different tasks. Effective learners are flexible and can adapt their strategy use to achieve their learning goals. If we expect prospective teachers to help their students become effective learners, they themselves need to be aware of and manage their own learning. But are our prospective teachers themselves effective learners in terms of strategy use? Using a qualitative approach, we examined the …

The Empty Centre : Power/Knowledge, Relationships And The Myth Of 'Student Centered Teaching' In Teacher Education., David R. Geelan

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The notion of ‘student centred learning’ is a popular and influential one in education at all levels. Questions of exactly how this may be defined, and what it would look like in practice are, however, much more difficult to address. During second semester 1998, I was involved in teaching a Masters level unit on teacher action research to a group of middle school teachers. I placed a high value on the knowledge, values and experience of these students, and attempted to allow them considerable freedom to construct their own learning activities and assessment procedures. Some students accepted the offered challenges, …

Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption On Solid Surfaces (Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption), D. Song, Daniel Forciniti Nov 2001

Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption On Solid Surfaces (Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption), D. Song, Daniel Forciniti

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of a short peptide in bulk water and at charged and neutral surfaces were performed. To pursue the objective of finding whether or not the water structure around the peptide changes upon adsorption and how these changes affect the orientation of the peptide at the surface, the water structure around the peptide in the bulk and at charged and neutral surfaces were compared by analyzing the pair correlation functions (PCFs) between selected groups in the peptide and the surrounding water. In general, evidence was obtained that water is not homogeneously distributed over the peptide surface.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electron-impact excitation of the 4p55s and 4p55p levels of Kr I has been investigated in detail by calculating cross sections using distorted-wave and close-coupling approaches. The results are presented from the excitation thresholds up to 50 eV incident energy. They are contrasted among the different calculations and compared with other theoretical predictions and experimental data. Significant disagreement is found with many of the recent experimental data of Chilton et al. [Phys. Rev. A 62, 032714 (2000)].

Three-Body Coulomb Problem Probed By Mapping The Bethe Surface In Ionizing Ion-Atom Collisions, Robert Moshammer, Appathurai N. Perumal, Michael Schulz, V. D. Rodriguez, Holger Kollmus, Rido Mann, Siegbert Hagmann, Joachim Hermann Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The three-body Coulomb problem has been explored in kinematically complete experiments on single ionization of helium by 100 MeV / u C 6 + and 3.6 MeV / u u 5 3 + impact. Low-energy electron emission (E e < 150 eV ) as a function of the projectile deflection ϑ p (momentum transfer), i.e., the Bethe surface [[15]], has been mapped with Δ ϑ p ± 25 nanoradian resolution at extremely large perturbations (3.6 MeV / uAu53+ ) where single ionization occurs at impact parameters of typically 10 times the He K -shell radius. The experimental data are not in agreement with state-of-the-art continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state theory.

Altitudinal Effects On Leaf Morphology And Their Implications Of Plasticity In Piper Species, November 2001, Rachel Chambers Nov 2001

Altitudinal Effects On Leaf Morphology And Their Implications Of Plasticity In Piper Species, November 2001, Rachel Chambers

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Leaf morphology is affected by environmental conditions and has therefore been studied in response to many environmental factors, including altitudinal gradients, which can be used to show responses to climatic changes of temperature and moisture. The ability of a plant to respond morphologically to its environment should influence the extent of its range along a gradient of changing environmental conditions. This study shows changes in width/length ratios, surface area, toughness, and petiole length of both young and old leaves within three Piper species along an altitudinal gradient. The ranges of two species, P. amalago and P. dotanum, extend to the …

Narrated Voices Of African American Women In Academe, Sharon L. Holmes Nov 2001

Narrated Voices Of African American Women In Academe, Sharon L. Holmes

Student Affairs Faculty Scholarship

This study was conducted to investigate the academic experiences of selected African American women faculty and administrators employed by two-year and four-year predominantly white institutions. The sample selection was purposeful, and three faculty members and two administrators agreed to participate. Each participant was interviewed on five separate occasions using an open-ended interview guide. Data analysis followed the standard inductive coding procedures articulated by Y. Lincoln and E. Guba (1985), and the constant comparative method (A. Strauss and J. Corbin, 1990) was used to generate theory in the study. The narratives of the participants provide insight into the academic experiences of …

Photomicrographs, The Npr 100, And Student Teaching: Library Liaison Ideas That Really Work, Katherine Furlong, Janelle L. Wertzberger

All Musselman Library Staff Works

In 1997, Gettysburg College's Musselman Library revived a dormant liaison program. Librarians were assigned to each department and program on campus and expected to serve as the first point of library contact for the teaching faculty.

Some core communications and activities emerged that we now encourage every liaison to practice; attending department meetings, sending reviews of new materials, tracking faculty book orders, and visiting faculty offices are seen as standard liaison activities.

We were delighted to find that almost every librarian had some unique and interesting experiences to report. The authors collected these experiences so that they could be shared …

Is Altruism Feasible? Interdependent Preferences Provide The Answer, Vicki Knoblauch Nov 2001

Is Altruism Feasible? Interdependent Preferences Provide The Answer, Vicki Knoblauch

Economics Working Papers

Is it possible to be altruistic in the face of altruism? With a naive definition of altruism, the answer is no. If an altruistic consumer is defined to be one whose preferences over allocations satisfy an appropriate interdependence condition, then the answer is yes. However, altruism in the face of malice is impossible. One of our findings is that if two consumers are mutually altruistic, exactly one of them should adopt selfish preferences over allocations.
