Enzymological And Radiotracer Studies Of Lipid Metabolism In The Flight-Capable And Flightless Morphs Of The Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Gryllus Firmus, Z. Zhao, Anthony J. Zera Nov 2001

Enzymological And Radiotracer Studies Of Lipid Metabolism In The Flight-Capable And Flightless Morphs Of The Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Gryllus Firmus, Z. Zhao, Anthony J. Zera

Anthony Zera Publications

The flight-capable morph of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, exhibited significantly higher activities of each of five lipogenic enzymes compared with the obligately flightless morph on a standard and a high-carbohydrate diet during early adulthood. Similarly, the rate of incorporation of [14C]-acetate into total lipid was higher in the flight-capable morph during this time. By contrast, activities of lipogenic enzymes and rates of lipid biosynthesis, in general, did not differ between morphs on a low nutrient diet during early adulthood. Differences in lipid biosynthesis account for previously documented differences in lipid reserves between morphs on some, but …

The Counterproliferation Imperative: Meeting Tomorrow's Challenges, Center For Counterproliferation Research

Books and Book Chapters

The proliferation of nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) weapons poses major strategic and operational challenges to the United States and an important political challenge to the international community. In the hands of hostile states, these weapons threaten stability in key regions, put U.S. forces at risk, and undermine the U.S. ability to project power and to reassure friends and allies. Increasingly, the American homeland is at risk as well. U.S. intelligence officials routinely warn that more than a dozen states are actively pursuing offensive chemical or biological weapons programs. Moreover, the 1998 Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests, as well as …

Field Evaluation Of Sounding Accuracy In Deep Water Multibeam Swath Bathymetry, Christian De Moustier Nov 2001

Field Evaluation Of Sounding Accuracy In Deep Water Multibeam Swath Bathymetry, Christian De Moustier

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

A new Kongsberg-Simrad EM120 multibeam echo-sounder has been installed aboard Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Research Vessel Roger Revelle in January 2001. This system can map reliably a 20 km swath of seafloor in 4000 m water depth with 191 soundings per ping. Such a wide swath width demands highly accurate (<0.05' RMS) roll information from a motion sensor, and makes estimating sounding accuracy across the swath an interesting challenge. It is shown that good accuracy estimates can be obtained by collecting data on station under control of the GPS-aided dynamic positioning system usually available on most modern long-range oceanographic vessels. A number of motion sensors, with RMS roll accuracy specifications ranging from 0.05' to 0.01' ,were tested with the EM120 sonar on station in 3800 m to 4000 m water depths. Unexpectedly, they yielded roughly the same depth uncertainty as a function of receive beam angle. This result might be explained by synchronization errors between the attitude data and the sonar data leading to beam pointing errors, other types of beam pointing errors, a range of roll accuracy narrower than specified for the motion sensors, or a combination of these factors

The purpose of this Brief is to pass on some key lessons learned in the pilot year of this project about laying the groundwork for collaboration and improving institutional practice.

Frequency Grid-A Simple Tool For Measuring Grassland Establishment, Kenneth P. Vogel, Robert A. Masters Nov 2001

Frequency Grid-A Simple Tool For Measuring Grassland Establishment, Kenneth P. Vogel, Robert A. Masters

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Simple, reliable tools are needed by land managers to quantify establishment success when seeding or re-seeding pastures or rangeland. A frequency grid was designed to measure seedling or plant establishment success for a single species, mixtures of species, or single species of a mixture. The frequency grid is a metal frame containing 25 squares (5 x 5) or cells and can be made from concrete reinforcing sheets that have 15 x 15 cm squares. When used, the frequency grid is either randomly or systematically placed within a seeded area. The number of cells containing 1 or more seeded plants is …

China's Wheat Production Projections And Implications For Imports, Bashir Qasmi, Yunqing Wang, Scott Fausti, Han Kim Nov 2001

China's Wheat Production Projections And Implications For Imports, Bashir Qasmi, Yunqing Wang, Scott Fausti, Han Kim

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Wheat production in China is analyzed using a seven-region model and data for 1978-1997. The empirical results indicate; 1) the area planted to wheat in China is responsive to the real wheat procurement price, 2) contrary to prior expectations, the growth in GNP, a proxy for industrialization and urbanization, did not seem to impact the wheat area significantly, 3) wheat yield showed a significant upward trend in all regions over time, depicting combined impacts of increased chemical fertilizer use, expansion of irrigated areas, increased investment, and other technological improvements, and 4) Chinese wheat production is projected to range from 132.33 …

Conflict Of Interest And Physical Therapy, Mike W. Martin, Donald L. Gabard Nov 2001

Conflict Of Interest And Physical Therapy, Mike W. Martin, Donald L. Gabard

Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

'In a chapter entitled “Conflict of Interest & Physical Therapy”, authors Martin & Gabard offer a cogent definition. They write simply, “conflicts of interest are situations in which individuals have interests that significantly threaten their role responsibilities, or would do so for a typical person having their role.” Likewise, Davis describes the standard view of conflict of interest as a situation in which a person P is in a relationship requiring P to exercise some judgment on another’s behalf and P has an interest “tending to interfere with the proper exercise of that judgment”. With regard to professional conflicts of …

U.S.-Saudi Relations: Rebuilding The Strategic Consensus, Joseph Mcmillan Nov 2001

U.S.-Saudi Relations: Rebuilding The Strategic Consensus, Joseph Mcmillan

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum examines the strain in U.S.-Saudi relations and outlines steps to rebuild a shared strategic foundation in the aftermath of shifting regional dynamics and rising tensions. It argues that the partnership, long rooted in mutual security interests, has been weakened by political, military, and societal pressures, including the challenges of sustaining U.S. military presence and differing priorities in the Middle East. The paper emphasizes Saudi Arabia’s critical role in U.S. efforts to address regional instability and counter terrorism, while highlighting the sensitivities surrounding sovereignty and legitimacy within the Kingdom. It proposes rebuilding consensus through clearer strategic alignment, improved …

Effect Of Altitude On Cyanide Concentration, Leaf Toughness, And Herbivory In Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae), November 2001, Matthew S. Martin Nov 2001

Effect Of Altitude On Cyanide Concentration, Leaf Toughness, And Herbivory In Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae), November 2001, Matthew S. Martin

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Insect herbivore diversity and abundance often decreases with increasing elevation due to greater extremes in temperature and climate (Janzen 1983; Hanson 2000). As a result, herbivore pressure on plants found at high altitude is lower. Thus, one might expect a reduction in the levels of antiherbivore defenses such as secondary metabolites or high fiber at higher altitudes. To test this, leaves from the tropical vine Passiflora biflora (Passifloraceae) were sampled in the Monteverde area of Costa Rica, from 800-1600m. Leaves were tested for cyanide levels, toughness, and percent herbivory. Cyanide in the leaves of P. biflora was found to increase …

Distribution And Host Species Ranges Of Umbonia Ataliba And Umbonia Crassicornis And The Potential For Interspecific Competition, November 2001, Charles A. Hernick Nov 2001

Distribution And Host Species Ranges Of Umbonia Ataliba And Umbonia Crassicornis And The Potential For Interspecific Competition, November 2001, Charles A. Hernick

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Umbonia crassicornis and Umbonia ataliba (Homoptera: Membracidae) elevational ranges and host tree ranges were studied in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Umbonia crassicornis was known to exist at elevations below 1000 m, while U. ataliba was known to exist at 1300 -1500 m. The possibility of interspecific competition or possible future competition was investigated in light of recent local and global warming trends and observed population shifts in birds and herps by Pounds et al. (1999). A census of Umbonia species and host plants was conducted along an elevational gradient, in addition to an experimental test, which examined U. crassicornis survivorship on …

Development Of Microbial Inocula For Silage Fermentations, Plunkett Clarke Nov 2001

Development Of Microbial Inocula For Silage Fermentations, Plunkett Clarke

Masters

Silage is the product formed by the fermentation process that occurs when grass is stored anaerobically. Microbial silage inoculants are often added to grass at ensiling in order to improve the silage fermentation. Inoculants normally contain strains of homofermentative lactic acid bacteria. In order to be effective 10 6 viable microorganisms must be added per gram grass ensiled. Literature reports have shown that there are a number of shortcomings associated with inoculants most notably a lack of viability and long lag phases. Therefore, the objective of the research was to improve the quality of silage inoculants. It was hoped to …
