Extended Tailing Of Bacteria Following Breakthrough At The Narrow Channel Focus Area, Oyster, Virginia, Pengfei Zhang, William P. Johnson, Timothy D. Scheibe, Keun-Hyung Choi, Fred C. Dobbs, Brian J. Mailloux Nov 2001

Extended Tailing Of Bacteria Following Breakthrough At The Narrow Channel Focus Area, Oyster, Virginia, Pengfei Zhang, William P. Johnson, Timothy D. Scheibe, Keun-Hyung Choi, Fred C. Dobbs, Brian J. Mailloux

OES Faculty Publications

Extended tailing of low bacterial concentrations following breakthrough at the Narrow Channel focus area was observed for 4 months. Bacterial attachment and detachment kinetics associated with breakthrough and extended tailing were determined by fitting a one-dimensional transport model to the field breakthrough-tailing data. Spatial variations in attachment rate coefficient (k(f)) were observed under forced gradient conditions (i.e., k(f) decreased as travel, distance increased), possibly because of decreased bacterial adhesion with increased transport distance. When pore water velocity decreased by an order of magnitude at 9 days following injection, apparent bacterial attachment rate coefficients did not decrease with velocity as expected …

Size-Induced Lattice Relaxation In Ceo₂ Nanoparticles, X.-D. Zhou, Wayne Huebner Nov 2001

Size-Induced Lattice Relaxation In Ceo₂ Nanoparticles, X.-D. Zhou, Wayne Huebner

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Size-induced lattice relaxation was observed for nanoscale CeO2 single crystals with an average size from 4 to 60 nm. Results showed the finest crystallites exhibited no strain-induced line broadening, while high temperature annealing resulted in larger grain sizes and significant strains. The observed shift in the x-ray diffraction lattice parameters was assumed to be due to the formation of defects on the lattice, specifically oxygen vacancies. Modeling revealed that the oxygen vacancy concentration ([V••O]) was found to be ≈4 x 1020/cm3 for the 4 nm crystallites, and decreased two orders of magnitude for …

Equilibrium Selection In Global Games With Strategic Complementarities, David M. Frankel, Stephen Morris, Ady Pauzner Nov 2001

Equilibrium Selection In Global Games With Strategic Complementarities, David M. Frankel, Stephen Morris, Ady Pauzner

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study games with strategic complementarities, arbitrary numbers of players and actions, and slightly noisy payoff signals. We prove limit uniqueness: as the signal noise vanishes, the game has a unique strategy profile that survives iterative dominance. This generalizes a result of Carlsson and van Damme (1993) for two player, two action games. The surviving profile, however, may depend on fine details of the structure of the noise. We provide sufficient conditions on payoffs for there to be noise-independent selection.

Fitting A Square Peg Into A Round Hole: The Application Of Traditional Rules Of Law To Modern Technological Advancements In The Workplace, Gregory I. Rasin, Joseph P. Moan Nov 2001

Fitting A Square Peg Into A Round Hole: The Application Of Traditional Rules Of Law To Modern Technological Advancements In The Workplace, Gregory I. Rasin, Joseph P. Moan

Missouri Law Review

In the ever-changing technological environment, the transmission of information has become as simple and as quick as the click of a mouse or the touch of a button. However, the emergence and widespread use of computers, electronic mail, and the Internet in the workplace also has created challenges for employers, their attorneys, and the courts. Specifically, the courts are forced to apply traditional rules of law to modern technological advancements. The lack of symmetry between these two notions has created uncertainty for today’s employer. This Article discusses the impact of new technology on employment law, particularly in the areas of …

The Optimal Concentration Of Creditors, Ivo Welch, Arturo Bris Nov 2001

The Optimal Concentration Of Creditors, Ivo Welch, Arturo Bris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

There are situations in which dispersed creditors (e.g., public creditors) have more difficulties and higher costs when collecting their claims in financial distress than concentrated creditors (e.g., banks). Under this assumption, our model predicts that measures of debt concentration relate [a] positively to creditors’ chosen aggregate debt collection expenditures; [b] positively to management’s chosen expenditures to avoid paying; [c] positively to total net litigation costs/waste in financial distress; and [d] positively to accomplished claim recovery by creditors (to which we present some preliminary favorable empirical evidence). Under additional assumptions, measures of debt concentration relate [e] positively to intrinsic firm quality; …

Differentiated Products Demand Systems From A Combination Of Micro And Macro Data: The New Car Market, Steven T. Berry, James Levinsohn, Ariel Pakes Nov 2001

Differentiated Products Demand Systems From A Combination Of Micro And Macro Data: The New Car Market, Steven T. Berry, James Levinsohn, Ariel Pakes

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we provide an algorithm for estimating characteristic based demand models from alternative data sources, and apply it to new data on the market for passenger vehicles. We find that, provided care is taken in constructing the demand system and rich enough data are available, the characteristic based model can both rationalize existing results and provide realistic out of sample predictions.

Taylor Cone And Jetting From Liquid Droplets In Electrospinning Of Nanofibers, Alexander L. Yarin, S Koombhongse, Darrell Hyson Reneker Nov 2001

Taylor Cone And Jetting From Liquid Droplets In Electrospinning Of Nanofibers, Alexander L. Yarin, S Koombhongse, Darrell Hyson Reneker

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Sessile and pendant droplets of polymer solutions acquire stable shapes when they are electrically charged by applying an electrical potential difference between the droplet and a flat plate, if the potential is not too large. These stable shapes result only from equilibrium of the electric forces and surface tension in the cases of inviscid, Newtonian, and viscoelastic liquids. In liquids with a nonrelaxing elastic force, that force also affects the shapes. It is widely assumed that when the critical potential phi (0*) has been reached and any further increase will destroy the equilibrium, the liquid body acquires a conical shape …

Il-1 Induces Collagenase-3 (Mmp-13) Promoter Activity In Stably Transfected Chondrocytic Cells: Requirement For Runx-2 And Activation By P38 Mapk And Jnk Pathways, John A. Mengshol, Matthew P. Vincenti, Constance E. Brinckerhoff Nov 2001

Il-1 Induces Collagenase-3 (Mmp-13) Promoter Activity In Stably Transfected Chondrocytic Cells: Requirement For Runx-2 And Activation By P38 Mapk And Jnk Pathways, John A. Mengshol, Matthew P. Vincenti, Constance E. Brinckerhoff

Dartmouth Scholarship

Osteoarthritic chondrocytes secrete matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) in response to interleukin-1 (IL-1), causing digestion of type II collagen in cartilage. Using chondrocytic cells, we previously determined that IL-1 induced a strong MMP-13 transcriptional response that requires p38 MAPK, JNK and the transcription factor NF-κB. Now, we have studied the tissue-specific transcriptional regulation of MMP-13. Constitutive expression of the transcription factor Runx-2 correlated with the ability of a cell type to express MMP-13 and was required for IL-1 induction; moreover, Runx-2 enhanced IL-1 induction of MMP-13 transcription by synergizing with the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. Transiently transfected MMP-13 promoters were not IL-1 …

A Study Of Muscle Activation In A Mathematical Model Of The Human Head And Neck, Janet Brelin-Fornari, A. Arabyan

Mechanical Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials

A model of the human head and neck that incorporates active and passive muscles is utilized in the analysis of non-impact loading in high “g” environments. The active muscles have the capability to be activated partially and in different combinations. The model is implemented in MADYMO using lumped parameters and Hill muscles. A comparison of simulation results with experimental data, generated by the Naval Biodynamics Laboratory (NBDL) for neck flexion and rebound, shows excellent agreement for a 15g impulsive load.

“Closet Case”: Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale And The Reinforcement Of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, And Transgender Invisibility, Darren Lenard Hutchinson Nov 2001

“Closet Case”: Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale And The Reinforcement Of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, And Transgender Invisibility, Darren Lenard Hutchinson

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article argues that the Supreme Court's decision in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale misapplies and ignores controlling First Amendment precedent and incorrectly defines “sexual identity” as a clinical or biological imposition that exists apart from expression or speech. This Article provides a doctrinal alternative to Dale that would protect vital interests in both equality and liberty and that would not condition, as does Dale, sexual “equality” upon the silencing of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals.

This Article proceeds in five parts. Part I provides an introduction to the case and issues.Part II discusses the evolution of the …

Role Of Protein Kinase C-Delta In The Regulation Of Collagen Gene Expression In Scleroderma Fibroblasts, Sergio A. Jimenez, Svetlana Gaidarova, Biagio Saitta, Nora Sandorfi, David J. Herrich, Joan C. Rosenbloom, Umberto Kucich, William R. Abrams, Joel Rosenbloom Nov 2001

Role Of Protein Kinase C-Delta In The Regulation Of Collagen Gene Expression In Scleroderma Fibroblasts, Sergio A. Jimenez, Svetlana Gaidarova, Biagio Saitta, Nora Sandorfi, David J. Herrich, Joan C. Rosenbloom, Umberto Kucich, William R. Abrams, Joel Rosenbloom

Selected Works of Sergio Jiménez, MD, MACR

Working with cultured dermal fibroblasts derived from control individuals and patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), we have examined the effects of protein kinase C-delta (PKC-delta) on type I collagen biosynthesis and steady-state levels of COL1A1 and COL3A1 mRNAs. Rottlerin, a specific inhibitor of PKC-delta, exerted a powerful, dose-dependent inhibition of type I and type III collagen gene expression in normal and SSc cells. Optimal rottlerin concentrations caused a 70-90% inhibition of type I collagen production, a >80% reduction in COL1A1 mRNA, and a >70% reduction in COL3A1 mRNA in both cell types. In vitro nuclear transcription assays and transient transfections …

A Note On Visualizing Response Transformations In Regression, R. Dennis Cook, David J. Olive Nov 2001

A Note On Visualizing Response Transformations In Regression, R. Dennis Cook, David J. Olive

Articles and Preprints

A new graphical method for assessing parametric transformations of the response in linear regression is given. Simply regress the response variable Y on the predictors and find the fitted values. Then dynamically plot the transformed response Y(λ) against those fitted values by varying the transformation parameter λ until the plot is linear. The method can also be used to assess the success of numerical response transformation methods and to discover influential observations. Modifications using robust estimators can be used as well.

Effects Of Endophyte Infection In Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea: Poaceae) On Community Diversity, Greg Spyreas, David J. Gibson, Beth A. Middleton Nov 2001

Effects Of Endophyte Infection In Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea: Poaceae) On Community Diversity, Greg Spyreas, David J. Gibson, Beth A. Middleton

Publications

Recent studies have suggested that the presence of endophytes in tall fescue can lead to decreased species richness in the associated plant community. To assess the generality of this hypothesis, a field study tested the effects of endophyte infection on a 3-yr-old successional field dominated by Festuca arundinacea. The potential importance of endophyte infection relative to other environmental factors was tested by including two additional treatments: the effects of soil fertility and mowing. Contrary to previous studies, a positive relationship was found between endophyte infection frequency and diversity (N = 23, F = 5.23, R2 = 0.19, P < 0.03). A strong interaction was found between the mowing treatment and endophyte infection frequency in predicting diversity (N = 22, F = 36.1, R2 …
