Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Electrical Studies Of As-Grown And Rapid Thermal Oxidized Si1−X−YGeXCY Films, W. K. Choi, W. Feng, L. K. Bera, Cary Y. Yang, J. Mi

Transmission electron microscopy results showed the formation of SiC precipitation in a rapid thermally oxidized (RTO) Si_1−x−yGe_xC_y sample with high-C content. The spectroscopic ellipsometry results showed that the E₁ gap increased and E₂ gap decreased as the C concentration increased. For the oxidized samples, the amplitude of the E₂ transitions reduced rapidly and the E₁ transition shifted to a lower energy. The reduction in the E₂ transitions was due to the presence of the oxide layer. A high-Ge content layer and the low-C content in the RTO films accounted for …

Meeting Medical Terminology Needs: The Ontology-Enhanced Medical Concept Mapper, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen

This paper describes the development and testing of the Medical Concept Mapper, a tool designed to facilitate access to online medical information sources by providing users with appropriate medical search terms for their personal queries. Our system is valuable for patients whose knowledge of medical vocabularies is inadequate to find the desired information, and for medical experts who search for information outside their field of expertise. The Medical Concept Mapper maps synonyms and semantically related concepts to a user's query. The system is unique because it integrates our natural language processing tool, i.e., the Arizona (AZ) Noun Phraser, with human-created …

Using A Civil Procedure Exam Question To Teach Persuasion, Sophie M. Sparrow

Law Faculty Scholarship

Studies show that learners master new material more effectively when it builds upon what they already know. By revisiting assignments from a previous semester, students can focus their efforts on persuading, rather than learning new doctrine or facts. Turning a predictive discussion into a persuasive argument demonstrates that making an argument requires the same rigorous thinking as predicting a result. One way to do this is to assign students to write an argument based on their fall Civil Procedure exam.

Existence Of Solutions Of The Classical Yang-Baxter Equation For A Real Lie Algebra, Jorg Feldvoss

We characterize finite-dimensional Lie algebras over the real numbers for which the classical Yang-Baxter equation has a non-trivial skew-symmetric solution (resp. a non-trivial solution with invariant symmetric part). Equivalently, we obtain a characterization of those finite-dimensional real Lie algebras which admit a non-trivial (quasi-) triangular Lie bialgebra structure.

Since Kautz and Selman's 1992 ECAI paper on satisfiability based planning, there has been several work on planning through finding models of a logical theory. Most of these works focus on finding a plan of a given length. If we want to find the shortest plan, then usually, we try plans of length 1, 2, ..., until we find the first length for which such a plan exists. When the planning problem is difficult and the shortest plan is of a reasonable length, this linear search can take a long time; to speed up the process, it has been proposed …

Detecting and removing over 300,000 estimated mines in Jordan’s 509 mine fields is a huge but not insurmountable problem. The deliberate clearing process requires courageous patience, a demonstrated quality of Jordan’s highly qualified engineer officers and soldiers. Trained and experienced deminers, outfitted with state-of-the-art protective equipment and using internationally recognized demining techniques and methodologies, form the base of the Royal Corps of Engineers Humanitarian Demining (HD) attack plan. Though many mines are unaccounted for due to erosion, flooding, and accidental detonation, Royal Corps of Engineer HD soldiers have an established perseverance that will prevail.

The United States seeks to relieve human suffering caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) while promoting U.S. foreign policy interests. U.S. objectives are to reduce civilian casualties, create conditions for the safe return of refugees and displaced persons to their homes and reinforce an affected country’s stability. The U.S. seeks to accomplish these objectives by helping to establish and support sustainable indigenous mine action capabilities in mine-affected nations where appropriate.
