State of the Animals 2001

After World War II, the animal protection movement enjoyed the revival that we discuss in this chapter. Contemporary scholarship suggests that social movements are more or less continuous, shifting from periods of peak activity to those of relative decline. The renaissance of animal protection during the past half century involved several distinct phases of evolution. Such divisions are discretionary, but they can clarify important trends. This analysis relies on a three-stage chronology in considering the progress of postwar animal protection, one that emphasizes revival, mobilization and transformation, and consolidation of gains.

Futurist fiction and fantasy encompasses a variety of subgenres: hard science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, sword-and-sorcerer fantasy, and cyberpunk. Unfortunately, even though nearly a century has expired since the advent of futurist fiction and fantasy, Richard Pryor’s observation and a call for action is still viable. Despite the growing number of Black futurist fiction and fantasy writers, the proportion of Black futurist fiction and fantasy authors to White futurist fiction and fantasy authors is dismal. From this mapping of genetic code, information such as the likelihood of developing cancer, diabetes, etc. would certainly become available. As a result of DoD transformation plans and recent operational experience (Air War Over Serbia and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM) portions of the 1999 U.S. Air Force White Paper on Long Range Bombers have become outmoded. In October 2001, the Secretary of the Air Force directed an updated Long-range Strike Aircraft White Paper incorporating our new defense planning guidance. This document provides an update to the 1999 White Paper and reflects current decisions concerning bomber force structure and basing. While modification plans remain largely intact, the focus has been refined to support the Global Strike Task Force concept.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) administers, enforces, and decides international trade disputes by establishing uniform rules of trade engagement designed to minimize trade wars. Countries that fail to abide by the WTO rules can be taken to the WTO courts and face eventual sanctioned retaliation. Without such rules, global economic competition can be as fierce as the most devastating battle and, as history has shown, can be the catalyst for war.

In Part II, we shall examine the Secession Statement in order to understand more fully the case it makes against the northern states and national government. Only then shall we be able to appreciate why this legally compelling document is ultimately not convincing. With that foundation, Part III examines One Florida opponents' arguments for preferences by government and the weaknesses of those arguments.
