Derivation Of Effective Hydraulic Parameters Of A Karst Aquifer From Discharge Hydrograph Analysis, S. J. Baedke, N. C. Krothe

In well‐developed karst terrains, three or more distinct portions of the karst continuum can be identified from hydrographs of springs issuing from the karst aquifer. Hydrographs from two karst springs within the same drainage basin at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indiana, have been analyzed, and ratios of transmissivity and specific yield (T /Sy ) have been established for the conduit and diffuse flow systems. These ratios have been compared with values of T derived from aquifer tests, so that independent values of Sy can be calculated for the diffuse system. Similarly, if the value of Sy is assumed …

Historical Fabrications On The Internet: Recognition, Evaluation, And Use In Bibliographic Instruction, John A. Drobnicki, Richard Asaro

Although the Internet provides access to a wealth of information, there is little, if any, control over the quality of that information. Side-by-side with reliable information, one finds disinformation, misinformation, and hoaxes. The authors of this paper discuss numerous examples of fabricated historical information on the Internet (ranging from denials of the Holocaust to personal vendettas), offer suggestions on how to evaluate websites, and argue that these fabrications can be incorporated into bibliographic instruction classes.

Alientating "Human" From "Right": U.S. And Uk Non-Compliance With Asylum Obligations Under International Human Rights Law, Inna Nazarova

Snapshot of the state of asylum seekers' rights in the United States and the UK at the time it was written. It provides an overview of U.S. and UK obligations to asylum seekers under international human rights law. The Comment also discusses the basics of U.S. and UK domestic law and procedure relevant to claims for asylum. The author advocates that the United State and the UK adopt a comprehensive approach to preserve asylum seekers' rights and concludes that domestic law should not become a pretext for human rights violations of asylum seekers in the post-September 11th world.

This article examines the legality and wisdom of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (“NATO”) intervention in Kosovo in 1990. The Kosovo campaign pushed at the boundaries of international law in at least two important respects. First, NATO's decision to engage in large-scale military action without prior Security Council authorization raised significant doubts about the status of the law governing the use of force and the viability of United Nations (“U.N.”) primacy in matters of international peace and security. On November 13, 2001, President Bush issued a sweeping and highly controversial Military Order for the purpose of creating military commissions with exclusive jurisdiction to try certain designated foreign nationals "for violations of the laws of war and other applicable laws" relevant to any prior or future "acts of international terrorism." The mentor-student relationship is a recurring motif in the work of playwright David Mamet. Mamet's portrayal of this relationship demonstrates a conception of human interaction in ways that closely parallel Jurgen Habermas's theory of "communicative action." Habermas posits his theory as a decentered method of examining human subjects' attempts to establish intersubjective claims of validity with other subjects through the media of communication and argumentation. Within this concept, Habermas defines the "Ideal Speech Situation" (ISS), or rational discourse free of any relations of domination aimed at creating an intersubjective recognition of validity between two speaking subjects; Mamet's own conception of …

The essence of the argument is this: all punishment must be inflicted in cold blood; whatever damage we do to others not in cold blood is not punishment but self-defense or revenge; what we have a right to inflict in cold blood is a question of the rules of just social cooperation and especially the justice of the sanctions required to sustain those rules; it is here argued that the fundamental principle is that we may inflict whatever punishment is necessary to deter wrongdoing and not disproportionate to the offence; I do not dismiss 'pure' retribution as a goal of …

Periodic Acoustic Radiation From A Low Aspect Ratio Propeller, John David Muench

An experimental program was conducted with the objective of providing high fidelity measurements of propeller inflow, unsteady blade surface pressures, and discrete acoustic radiation over a wide range of speeds. Anechoic wind tunnel experiments were preformed using the SISUP propeller. The upstream stator blades generate large wake deficits that result in periodic unsteady blade forces that acoustically radiate at blade passing frequency and higher harmonics. The experimental portion of this research successfully measured the inflow velocity, blade span unsteady pressures and directive characteristics of the blade-rate radiated noise associated with this complex propeller geometry while the propeller was operating on …

The focus of this research is to develop a material composition that can be processed by rapid prototyping (RP) in order to produce tooling for the die casting process. Where these rapidly produced tools will be superior to traditional tooling production methods by offering one or more of the following advantages: reduced tooling cost, shortened tooling creation time, reduced man-hours for tool creation, increased tool life, and shortened die casting cycle time. This article outlines the case against NATO as having committed war crimes that the author believes should have been tried before the ICTY. The author argues that by not subjecting countries like the United States and other NATO members to international criminal trials and consequences, it undermines international criminal law. The author concludes by discussing the ICC and the United States qualified signing of, and suggested withdrawal from, the treaty and the ramifications that it has for the legitimacy of international criminal law.

The Vietnamese government's anxiety and fear of foreign involvement within its borders can be traced back to its history of foreign domination. Many generations of Vietnamese endured continuous warfare to obtain Vietnam's current independence.

This Note walks through Vietnam's economic changes over the past fifteen years. It describes Vietnam's Labor Code, and analyzes the Vietnamese legal system's shortcomings in protecting workers from exploitation by multinational corporations. The Note then identifies possible explanations and solutions to some of the problems, and concludes with an overview of doi moi ("new economic thinking").

This response to Father Schall's article explores just how three principles, which he proposes in general terms as central to integrity in moral reasoning and decision over the use of military force, serve, in fact, to organize an assessment of the rights and wrongs of actions by states and individuals within a conflict like the one coming to a crisis on September 11th. Archery is becoming more popular as a recreational sport, so it is likely that physical therapists will be seeing more archery-related injuries and will need to know how to treat these athletes. Few studies available specify which muscles are used when shooting compound or traditional bows. The purpose of this study is to identify the muscles around the wrist and elbow that are recruited from draw to release, the specific timing of this recruitment, and the differences in recruitment and muscle activity when using a compound bow compared to a traditional bow.

There are to date some six significant judicial pronouncements dealing with the interpretation and application of article 4--genocide - of the ICTY Statute: two Rule 61 hearings; the Trial Chamber rulings in Jelisic, Krstic, and Sikirica; and the Appeals Chamber decision in Jelisic. In the course of these judgments, the ICTY has made important pronouncements about the actus reus of genocide, the nature of the protected groups, the quantitative dimension of the crime, and the concept of intent.

The purpose of this project was to better understand cultural change over time in Western Sicily. We performed archaeological survey in Western Sicily to gather evidence of early contact with Phoenicians in this particular area. Research was conducted over a six-week period of survey at Mokarta, near the city of Salemi. Collection at Site 159 included retrieval of over 1200 diagnostic pottery shreds, which were analyzed for cultural characteristics. Significant findings included an artifact-rich site with a nearly complete chronological record, ranging from the Prehistoric Iron-Age to the Late Mediaeval period.
