Attribute Agenda-Setting In An Open Primary: An Examination Of Press Coverage And Political Ad Effects, Scott Hobbs Jan 2001

Attribute Agenda-Setting In An Open Primary: An Examination Of Press Coverage And Political Ad Effects, Scott Hobbs

LSU Master's Theses

Creating a favorable candidate image is one of the more difficult tasks a political consultant faces. Besides researching which issues their client will address, the consultant must analyze what attributes voters find most appealing in a candidate. Then, through a complex process, a candidate image is finally packaged and presented to the public. This thesis looks at the end result of the packaging process for a Mayoral candidate in East Baton Rouge parish. By examining the press coverage and campaign ads in a local election in a mid-size city, this study expands on previous second level agenda-setting research. Literature in …

The Uncertain Future Of Fair Use In A Global Information Marketplace, Marshall Leaffer Jan 2001

The Uncertain Future Of Fair Use In A Global Information Marketplace, Marshall Leaffer

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The author of this article forecasts an increasingly troubled future, if not the demise of the doctrine of fair use in copyright law. Legal developments, both at home and abroad, driven by technological change, and the push toward the international harmonization of legal norms, threaten the very survival of fair use. Given these realities the doctrine will, of necessity, be reconceptualized Although fair use values will always be inscribed in copyright law, these values will have their practical manifestation in decentralized form, and effectuated, in large part, through industry agreement. They will exist in conjunction with certain bright line exceptions …

Online Liberty: Freedom Of Expression In The Information Age, Robert Dawkins Jan 2001

Online Liberty: Freedom Of Expression In The Information Age, Robert Dawkins

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Cyberspace is generally conceived as a highly participatory environment that facilitates broad-based participation in the free marketplace of ideas. This paper considers the impact of the new media context upon the constitutional validity of laws regulating expressive content. Canadian jurisprudence regarding freedom of expression rights pursuant to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms are reviewed and contrasted with the American medium specific approach. It is argued that current Canadian jurisprudence indicates that the new media context should not alter the level of scrutiny in the Section 1 analysis. While the democratizing influence of cyberspace is laudable, new media must …

Oxygen Impurities In Nial: Relaxation Effects, David Djajaputra, Bernard R. Cooper Jan 2001

Oxygen Impurities In Nial: Relaxation Effects, David Djajaputra, Bernard R. Cooper

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We have used a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method to calculate the effects of oxygen impurities on the electronic structure of NiAl. Using the supercell method with a 16-atom supercell we have investigated the cases where an oxygen atom is substitutionally placed at either a nickel or an aluminum site. Full relaxation of the atoms within the supercell was allowed. We found that oxygen prefers to occupy a nickel site over an aluminum site with a site selection energy of 138 mRy (21,370 K). An oxygen atom placed at an aluminum site is found to cause a substantial relaxation of …

The program provides a year long experience in one school for pre-service teachers. This enables the pre-service teachers to increase their understanding of the school, its …

Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan Jan 2001

Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan

Theses : Honours

Artificial wetlands are becoming an ever more visible feature of the landscape of Perth and the Swan Coastal Plain. They are appearing in the centre of new suburbs and also in the remediation of stormwater systems. Crucially wetlands have been a denigrated and abused part of the landscape. Imported landscape aesthetics have seen the function of wetlands as being an impediment to progress and the development of land. For indigenous Aboriginal peoples of the land, Nyoongar peoples, wetlandspaces (Giblett, I996a) are crucial to their inclusive understanding of 'country'. Intertwined with notions of spirituality, stewardship, and food source among others. With …
