Upper Rio Grande Basin: Finding Flexibility In Federal Reservoir System Operations Within The Web Of Water Laws, Policies, And Institutions, Gail Stockton, William Deragon, Lisa Robert
Law of the Rio Chama
An intricate structure of water laws, policies and institutions in the upper Rio Grande basin provides the framework for operation of nearly a dozen federal reservoirs and related projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation. These two agencies are responsible, respectively, for controlling and safely passing flood flows, and for storing and releasing water for agricultural, municipal / industrial use and other uses. The institutions encountered or affected by the Rio Grande as it flows from its headwaters in Colorado to Fort Quitman, Texas, include two counties, as many local governments and a myriad …

Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan
Docile Bodies Of Water : Artificial Wetlands And Imagineered Suburbs, Steven Philip Mckiernan
Theses : Honours
Artificial wetlands are becoming an ever more visible feature of the landscape of Perth and the Swan Coastal Plain. They are appearing in the centre of new suburbs and also in the remediation of stormwater systems. Crucially wetlands have been a denigrated and abused part of the landscape. Imported landscape aesthetics have seen the function of wetlands as being an impediment to progress and the development of land. For indigenous Aboriginal peoples of the land, Nyoongar peoples, wetlandspaces (Giblett, I996a) are crucial to their inclusive understanding of 'country'. Intertwined with notions of spirituality, stewardship, and food source among others. With …

This report discusses the operation of doppler units, provides a comparison of the technology, benefits, cost, and use.
Pumped Storage: Simple Changes, Big Savings, Charles M. Burt
Pumped Storage: Simple Changes, Big Savings, Charles M. Burt
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Several California irrigation districts achieved savings on electrical energy charges by implementing various types of pumped storage systems. Pumped storage uses some type of reservoir to store pumped water at a higher elevation than the original water supply. During times of peak statewide electricity demand, pumping is reduced while water is withdrawn from the reservoir which acts as a buffer.
High-Temperature Stress-Accerated Grain Boundary Oxidation Mechanism On Inconel 783 Superalloy, Cezar Cisloiu
High-Temperature Stress-Accerated Grain Boundary Oxidation Mechanism On Inconel 783 Superalloy, Cezar Cisloiu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Under high temperature and stress (as in the front of the crack tip) oxygen can diffuse to the grain boundaries and react with the constitutive elements of the alloy producing brittle oxide layers, which cause the embrittlement of the material, and a brittle elastic, intergranular failure. Crack growth tests were performed on INCONEL 783 three-point-bend specimens in air and controlled oxygen atmosphere at 650°C and 538°C on two types of specimens, with and without beta-phase. Initial elastic crack growth was observed at test specimens without beta-phase. The specimens with beta-phase didn't reveal elastic crack growth. Based on the results of …

Research Article Introductions In Thai: Genre Analysis Of Academic Writing., Chalermsri Jogthong
Research Article Introductions In Thai: Genre Analysis Of Academic Writing., Chalermsri Jogthong
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study presents an analysis of research article introductions (RAIs) written in Thai by Thai academic writers. The analysis is based on 40 Thai RAIs taken from Thai journals in educational and medical fields. The rhetorical characteristics and linguistic features of the RAIs are examined using the CARS model proposed by Swales (1990). The results show that the pattern of studied RAIs supports the general framework presented by Swales but the specific steps in the introductions are less consistent with the model. The Thai writers avoided criticizing and evaluating the works of others. They adopted different strategies in establishing a …
Beyond The Workplace: The Uneven Development Of The Japanese Space -Economy And The Role Of Labor, 1965-1994., Shawn Michael Banasick
Beyond The Workplace: The Uneven Development Of The Japanese Space -Economy And The Role Of Labor, 1965-1994., Shawn Michael Banasick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite the rapid industrialization and high rates of economic growth that Japan experienced for much of the postwar period, there have been relatively few attempts by English-language researchers to investigate Japan's domestic space-economy at the regional scale. This dissertation examines the process of uneven development in Japan from 1965 to 1994. The conceptual framework for the analysis is a regional political economy approach, combining theories of uneven development with recent work by Michael Webber and David Rigby on regional profit rates in manufacturing and the determinants of profit rate change over time. In addition, insights from the recent literature on …
An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya
An Analysis Of Quality Of Life, Income Distribution And Rural Development In West Virginia., James Obadiah Bukenya
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The term quality of life has been described as a vague entity (Grayson and Young, 1994) and conceptualizing it, has proved to be difficult. Nevertheless, understanding how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction is important because these subjective evaluations determine life adjustment and mobility behavior and is the basis of demand for public actions. Additionally, more effective social programs can be designed based on the knowledge of how individuals form their needs to create life satisfaction and avoid problems that may result because the perceptions of the planners and policy makers do not always coincide with those of …
A Flow Rate Measurement System For A Mobile Emissions Measurement System., Andrew David Fuller
A Flow Rate Measurement System For A Mobile Emissions Measurement System., Andrew David Fuller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The most realistic procedure for the determination of regulated diesel engine exhaust emissions is over-the-road testing. A Mobile Emissions Measurement System (MEMS) was developed by West Virginia University for over-the-road emissions testing. A component of this system is the flow rate measurement device, an Annubar, incorporated within a flow tube. To measure flow rate from this differential pressure device, a differential and absolute pressure transducer had to be selected. Experimentation was performed and it was determined that a Validyne P365 differential pressure transducer and an Omega PX-203 absolute transducer were optimal. Flow pulsations are present in diesel engine exhaust and …

Modeling Of Hand-Arm-Glove Vibration System And Testing And Evaluating Of Antivibration Gloves, Jianying Cui
Modeling Of Hand-Arm-Glove Vibration System And Testing And Evaluating Of Antivibration Gloves, Jianying Cui
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Work-related hand-arm disorders (HAVS) caused by exposure to vibration while operating vibrational tools were discussed; no clear dose-effect relationship between vibration exposure and HAVS was found yet. Ways to avoid or delay harmful impact on workers were explored, one means of which is using antivibration gloves during operation. Four types of antivibration gloves were tested per standard ISO 10819, test setup and procedures were presented. Two models of hand-arm-glove system were developed and analyzed; the models were used for predicting the gloves' transmissibility before carrying out actual tests. Model fit was done for the two models to the actual tested …
Thunder In The Desert: Commercial Air Travel And Tourism In Las Vegas, 1959--2001, Daniel Kenneth Bubb
Thunder In The Desert: Commercial Air Travel And Tourism In Las Vegas, 1959--2001, Daniel Kenneth Bubb
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis carefully examines the relationship between the commercial air travel and tourist industries in Las Vegas, especially highlighting their unprecedented growth in the second half of the twentieth century. It not only provides an accurate historic account of both industries, but clearly delineates the dependence of tourism on commercial air service as the primary source of transportation to Las Vegas; While the thesis's overarching theme focuses on commercial air travel and tourism, it also contains a set of subthemes, one of which highlights the symbiotic relationship of the commercial air travel industry with the Strip "mega-resorts," and the air …
Analysis Of Casino Table Game Tipping By Comdex Conventioneers, Joseph Nelson Christensen
Analysis Of Casino Table Game Tipping By Comdex Conventioneers, Joseph Nelson Christensen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study analyzed the mean tips earned per table game dealer of a mega-resort casino located on the Las Vegas "strip" during Comdex, a large annual computer convention located in Las Vegas. Members of the media and gaming authorities have claimed that Comdex conventioneers do not gamble or tip as much as most convention attendees, yet no substantiated and documented explanation has been offered to explain why. This study hypothesized that Comdex conventioneers have the "programmer personality," which is low in the personality dimensions of neuroticism and extraversion. Since the amount tipped has been shown to positively correlate with high …
Microbial Implications For Structural Integrity During Nuclear Waste Storage, Terry Ann Leilani Else
Microbial Implications For Structural Integrity During Nuclear Waste Storage, Terry Ann Leilani Else
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The study of microorganisms in oligotrophic environments is vital to understanding the geology and ecology of Nevada, and in particular, Yucca Mountain and the Nevada Test Site. Native to the Yucca Mountain tuff and to the Nevada Test Site soil are microorganisms, existing in biofilms, which are capable of corroding metals, and producing acids or enzymes that can degrade materials such as wood and cardboard. Studying the environmental conditions that could promote the growth of such microorganisms is essential for the modeling of the Yucca Mountain repository and the waste burial program on the Nevada Test Site. The first phase …
Algal Growth Potential And Nutrient Limitation In The Las Vegas Bay, Lake Mead, Nevada, Xiaomo Du
Algal Growth Potential And Nutrient Limitation In The Las Vegas Bay, Lake Mead, Nevada, Xiaomo Du
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Algal bioassays were conducted to determine algal growth potential (AGP) and nutrient limitation of the Las Vegas (LV) Bay of Lake Mead using the standard test organism Selenastrum capricornutum and the Lake phytoplankton. Results for the current nutrient levels in the LV Bay revealed that the AGP of the LV Bay waters, measured by the maximum specific growth rates is limited by phosphorus (P). Both the growth rates and the biomass content indicated the LV Bay is P-limited. Bioassay results, using higher nitrogen (N) and phosphorus levels, showed that increasing the N and P of the Bay concentrations to levels …
Emotion And Meaning-Making: Affordances In The Classroom, Kathy L. Schuh, Julie Rea
Emotion And Meaning-Making: Affordances In The Classroom, Kathy L. Schuh, Julie Rea
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
It is well known that emotion plays a significant role in the learning process. In this study, we describe affect/emotion incidents as part of students’ personal knowledge construction efforts in three sixth grade classrooms. These affect/emotion responses are identified by word choice, topic, punctuation, or description. The role of each classroom as it served as an affordance for affect/emotion knowledge construction efforts is also discussed. We posit that the role of dialog and activity choice, which traditionally lie within the hands of the teacher, serve as the primary affordances through which students are provided opportunity to use affect/emotion responses in …
Participation Input And Participation Equality Within Cross-Cultural Computer Mediated Communication (Cmc) Environments, Roberto J. Mejias
Participation Input And Participation Equality Within Cross-Cultural Computer Mediated Communication (Cmc) Environments, Roberto J. Mejias
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
The current study measured the influence of national culture, anonymity levels, and technological support (CMC and non-CMC) upon participation input and participation equality within and between forty-two U.S. and Mexican groups constituting a total of 469 participants. Results indicate that both U.S. and Mexican groups supported by CMC technology (i.e., group support systems) were more productive in generating participation input than corresponding manual groups. While U.S. manual groups generated more unique or non-redundant ideas than U.S. CMC groups, Mexican CMC groups in contrast, generated more unique ideas than Mexican manual groups. With regard to perceived participation equality, U.S. groups indicated …

Participation Equality: Measurement Within Collaborative Electronic Environments-A Three Country Study, Roberto W. Zmud, Roberto J. Mejias, Bruce A. Reinig, Isabel M. Martinez-Martinez
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
While the engendering of participation equality is generally viewed as a desirable group process attribute, findings from prior empirical research are both inconsistent and inconclusive regarding the measurement of participation equality within collaborative electronically supported environments. One explanation for this inconsistency lies in the manner in which the “participation equality” construct has been studied and measured. Results of analyses performed across three distinct national cultures utilizing 86 experimental groups and over 660 participants from the United States, Hong Kong and Spain are presented with recommendations for future research involving the participation equality construct. This is a first paper in a …
