Heci V. Neel: Application Of The Discovery Rule To Damages Arising Out Of Oil And Gas Leases., L. Melanie Martin Jan 2001

Heci V. Neel: Application Of The Discovery Rule To Damages Arising Out Of Oil And Gas Leases., L. Melanie Martin

St. Mary's Law Journal

Texas landowners face a heavy burden in bringing claims for damages arising out of inherently undiscoverable damages to mineral estates because the statute of limitations starts at the time of injury rather than the time of discovery. Previously, courts adopted the discovery rule as an exception to the statute of limitations, effectively stalling the starting point of the statute of limitations. A two-pronged threshold inquiry is held before the application of the discovery rule. First, the court must determine if the injury is inherently undiscoverable or not detected despite the use of due diligence. Secondly, there must be objectively verifiable …

Dynamic Performance Of Isolated Power Converters, David Badia Jan 2001

Dynamic Performance Of Isolated Power Converters, David Badia

Theses

Isolated power converters are primarily used in applications where electrical galvanic isolation is required for safety purposes. They are also used in applications, which require various output voltages level. They have been studied from many different aspects, but in this thesis the fundamental circuits of the flyback, the forward and the half-bridge converters are studied and compared extensively, with regard to their dynamic performance.

This analysis will lead us to a better understanding of their behaviour, that is a crucial point in the selection of each topology for a particular application. Moreover, the dynamic response of each converter is different; …

‘ Europe is losing its competitiveness ‘ was the underlying message in the Tanaiste’s, Ms Mary Harney, opening address, at the 3^^ annual Benchmarking Conference held in the O’Reilly Hall, Dublin, on the 28^^ of February 2001. According to the latest figures from the European Commission, the European GDP lags its Japanese and American rivals by 17% and 33% respectively. Small and medium sized enterprises provide over 66% of the European Community employment and 65% of the turnover, which indicate the vital role played by small and medium sized enterprises in Europe’s economy. The objective of this thesis was to …

Heavy Metal Distribution For Aqueous And Solid Phases In Urban Runoff, Snowmelt And Soils, Donald W. Glenn Iii Jan 2001

Heavy Metal Distribution For Aqueous And Solid Phases In Urban Runoff, Snowmelt And Soils, Donald W. Glenn Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

At the start of the third millennium, over 50% of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Anthropogenic activities associated with urban development such as traffic generate significant particulate and heavy metal mass loadings. Ten urban highway sites located throughout the metropolitan area of Cincinnati, Ohio were studied. Storm water, snow and transportation land use soil/residual complexes (RSCs) were collected at each site. For the storm water, results are presented for a series of eight rainfall runoff events over a two-year period and included analyses between dissolved and particulate-bound fractions of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd and Zn), and water …

Breakdown Voltage In Thin Iii-V Avalanche Photodiodes, Mohammad A. Saleh Jan 2001

Breakdown Voltage In Thin Iii-V Avalanche Photodiodes, Mohammad A. Saleh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

  1. The dead-space multiplication theory of Hayat et al. [Journal of Lightwave Technology 10, 1415 (1992)], in conjunction with the multiplication-width-independent ionization-coefficient model developed by Saleh et al. [IEEE Trans. Electron Devices 47, 625 (2000)], are shown to accurately predict breakdown voltages for thin avalanche photodiodes of GaAs, InP, In0:52Al0:48As, and Al0:2Ga0:8As, over a broad range of device widths. The breakdown voltage is determined from the analytical expression for the impulse-response-function decay rate.

Artin-Schreier Families And 2-D Cycle Codes, Cem Guneri Jan 2001

Artin-Schreier Families And 2-D Cycle Codes, Cem Guneri

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We start with the study of certain Artin-Schreier families. Using coding theory techniques, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition for such families to have a nontrivial curve with the maximum possible number of rational points over the finite field in consideration. This result produces several nice corollaries, including the existence of certain maximal curves; i.e., curves meeting the Hasse-Weil bound. We then present a way to represent two-dimensional (2-D) cyclic codes as trace codes starting from a basic zero set of its dual code. This representation enables us to relate the weight of a codeword to the number of rational …

Pervaporation Of Solvent Mixtures Using Polymeric And Zeolitic Membranes: Separation Studies And Modeling, Dhaval S. Shah Jan 2001

Pervaporation Of Solvent Mixtures Using Polymeric And Zeolitic Membranes: Separation Studies And Modeling, Dhaval S. Shah

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The separation characteristics of binary alcohol-water mixtures were studied overa wide range of feed concentration and temperature using polymeric and zeoliticpervaporation membranes. For the hydrophilic PVA membrane, the total flux (at 55 0C)for the ethanol-water system decreased from 0.45 to 0.05 kg/m2/hr as the feed ethanolconcentration was increased from 30 to 95 wt. %. The separation factor (water/ethanol)was found to increase by about 100 times for the same range of concentration. TheUNIQUAC theory was used to predict the activity of binary alcohol-water mixtures in thePVA membrane. The UNIQUAC theory successfully takes into account the nonidealitiespresent in the alcohol/water-PVA membrane system. …

Datalog With Contraints: A New Answer-Set Programming Formalism, Deborah J. East Jan 2001

Datalog With Contraints: A New Answer-Set Programming Formalism, Deborah J. East

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Knowledge representation and search are two fundamental areas of artificial intelligence. Knowledge representation is the area of artificial intelligence which deals with capturing, in a formal language, the properties of objects and the relationships between objects. Search is a systematic examination of all possible candidate solutions to a problem that is described as a theory in some knowledge representation formalism. We compare traditional declarative programming formalisms such as PROLOG and DATALOG with answer-set programming formalisms such as logic programming with stable model semantic. In this thesis we develop an answer-set formalism we can DC. The logic of DC is based …

Finite Memory Policies For Partially Observable Markov Decision Proesses, Christopher Lusena Jan 2001

Finite Memory Policies For Partially Observable Markov Decision Proesses, Christopher Lusena

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation makes contributions to areas of research on planning with POMDPs: complexity theoretic results and heuristic techniques. The most important contributions are probably the complexity of approximating the optimal history-dependent finite-horizon policy for a POMDP, and the idea of heuristic search over the space of FFTs.

Texture, Microstructure And Formability Of Aluminum Alloys, Xiang-Ming Cheng Jan 2001

Texture, Microstructure And Formability Of Aluminum Alloys, Xiang-Ming Cheng

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Texture, microstructure and formability were studied in Direct Chill Cast (DC) and Strip Cast (SC) aluminum alloys with regard to crystallographic anisotropy, the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect and aging softening behavior. It was found that material properties change greatly with manufacturing processes (DC vs. SC) and chemical composition (3xxx vs. 5 xxx alloys). DC cast hot band materials are usually fully recrystallized and have strong softening textures while SC hot band materials have a rolling structure with strong deformation textures. Softening textures cause 90 earing while deformation textures result in 45 earing after deep drawing. During cold rolling, 90 earing in …

Porosity, Percolation Thresholds, And Water Retention Behavior Of Random Fractal Porous Media, Michael C. Sukop Jan 2001

Porosity, Percolation Thresholds, And Water Retention Behavior Of Random Fractal Porous Media, Michael C. Sukop

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Fractals are a relatively recent development in mathematics that show promise as a foundation for models of complex systems like natural porous media. One important issue that has not been thoroughly explored is the affect of different algorithms commonly used to generate random fractal porous media on their properties and processes within them. The heterogeneous method can lead to large, uncontrolled variations in porosity. It is proposed that use of the homogeneous algorithm might lead to more reproducible applications. Computer codes that will make it easier for researchers to experiment with fractal models are provided. In Chapter 2, the application …

Photooxidation Of Polymeric-Inorganic Nanocomposites: Chemical, Thermal Stability And Fire Retardancy Investigations, Adams Tidjani, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Nanocomposites of polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride/clay and polypropylene/clay were prepared by melt blending using two different approaches. X-Ray diffraction results showed an intercalated structure. Samples of nanocomposites were exposed to UV light under atmospheric oxygen and their photo-oxidative stability was studied using FTIR and UV spectroscopy. The consequences of this photo-oxidation on the thermal stability and fire retardant performance of the nanocomposites were also addressed from thermogravimetry analysis and Cone calorimetry.

Xps Characterization Of Friedel-Crafts Cross-Linked Polystyrene, Jiangqi Wang, Jianxin Du, Hongyang Yao, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2001

Xps Characterization Of Friedel-Crafts Cross-Linked Polystyrene, Jiangqi Wang, Jianxin Du, Hongyang Yao, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The combination of a difunctional alkylating agent, either hydroxymethylbenzyl chloride or α,α′-dichloroxylene with polystyrene or high-impact polystyrene together with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, 2-ethylhexyldiphenylphosphate, and an amine to react with hydrogen chloride has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results confirm what had been suggested from previous investigations using thermogravimetric analysis; cross-linking of the polymer occurs as the temperature is raised and the alcohol-containing alkylating agent gives a greater amount of cross-linking than does the dichloro compound.
