Institution Of A Behavior-Based Safety System In A Mid-Sized Corporation, Donald Gary Brown

All ETDs from UAB

A behavior-based safety system was instituted in a mid-sized corporation that employed approximately 650 individuals. The intervention consisted of training, observations, and feedback and used a time-series analysis with multiple baseness. One division received the intervention, while two other divisions served as concurrent baseness. Initially, the corporate safety team received training on the behavior-based safety system. They began conducting baseline observations in all three divisions in January 1998. In the division that received the intervention, the safety team began conducting baseline observations in April 1998 and the production personnel began their observations in June 1998. The other two divisional safety …

Prophylaxis Of Disease Caused By Bacterial Pathogens Of Man, Richard William Titball Jan 2001

Prophylaxis Of Disease Caused By Bacterial Pathogens Of Man, Richard William Titball

Other Faculty of Health Theses

This thesis reports research undertaken which will lead to improved pretreatments and therapies for disease caused by Clostridium perfringens, Francisella tularensis, Yersinia pestis and Burkholderia pseudomallei. C. perfringens is thought to be the most widely distributed bacterial pathogen and is the most important Clostridial species associated with enteric disease in domesticated animals. During warfare C. perfringens has been a significant causes of mortality. Between 1 and 10% of wounded personnel developed gas gangrene during the 1st and 2nd world wars. The ability of the bacterium to cause a range of diseases is due largely to the differential production of toxins. …

Rna Binding Domain Of Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase, Cary Lai, James R. Mitchell, Kathleen Collins Jan 2001

Rna Binding Domain Of Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase, Cary Lai, James R. Mitchell, Kathleen Collins

Biology Faculty Publications

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein reverse transcriptase that extends the ends of chromosomes. The two telomerase subunits essential for catalysis in vitro are the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and the telomerase RNA. Using truncations and site-specific mutations, we identified sequence elements of TERT and telomerase RNA required for catalytic activity and protein-RNA interaction for Tetrahymena thermophila telomerase. We found that the TERT amino and carboxyl termini, although evolutionarily poorly conserved, are nonetheless important for catalytic activity. In contrast, high-affinity telomerase RNA binding requires only a small region in the amino terminus of TERT. Surprisingly, the TERT region necessary and sufficient for …

Unbundling Ge/Honeywell: The Assessment Of Conglomerate Mergers Under Ec Competition Law, Götz Drauz Jan 2001

Unbundling Ge/Honeywell: The Assessment Of Conglomerate Mergers Under Ec Competition Law, Götz Drauz

Fordham International Law Journal

A careful approach needs to be taken by antitrust authorities in the assessment of the possible exclusionary effects of conglomerate mergers on competitive conditions. In general, conglomerate mergers will raise concerns when they make the leverage of market power possible, thus having as their effect or object a foreclosure of the market to effective competition. The resulting competitive harm stems from the accumulation of substantial market power across complementary products or product ranges that, not being based on normal business performance or competition on the merits, may substantially reduce consumers' choice and ultimately lead to higher prices and a loss …

'Consent' In Relation To Curbs Of Parallel Trade In Europe, Valentine Korah Jan 2001

'Consent' In Relation To Curbs Of Parallel Trade In Europe, Valentine Korah

Fordham International Law Journal

The most important development of 2000 in competition law for Intellectual Property (“IP”) advisors is, probably, the judgment in the Court of First Instance (“CFI”) in Bayer v. Commission. Preventing traders buying medicines in countries where the government permits them to be sold only at prices well below world levels has long created problems. Parallel traders then sell them in countries where the maximum price is higher.

Specificity Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test In Social Phobia, Carolyn Becker, N. Namour, Claudia Zayfert, M. T. Hegel Jan 2001

Specificity Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test In Social Phobia, Carolyn Becker, N. Namour, Claudia Zayfert, M. T. Hegel

Psychology Faculty Research

The specificity of the Social Interaction Self-Statement Test (SISST) was evaluated in sample of 277 patients seeking treatment for anxiety. Both the positive and negative scales significantly discriminated between patients diagnosed with social phobia and other anxiety disorder patients. Patients with social phobia scored significantly higher on the negative scale and significantly lower on the positive scale as compared with other treatment-seeking anxiety disorder patients. Negative SISST scores were significantly correlated with the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The positive scale was significantly correlated with the BDI. Despite this relationship, differences in BAI and BDI scores …

Security In A Distributed Processing Environment, Elizabeth Mary Joyce Jan 2001

Security In A Distributed Processing Environment, Elizabeth Mary Joyce

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Distribution plays a key role in telecommunication and computing systems today. It has become a necessity as a result of deregulation and anti-trust legislation, which has forced businesses to move from centralised, monolithic systems to distributed systems with the separation of applications and provisioning technologies, such as the service and transportation layers in the Internet. The need for reliability and recovery requires systems to use replication and secondary backup systems such as those used in ecommerce. There are consequences to distribution. It results in systems being implemented in heterogeneous environment; it requires systems to be scalable; it results in some …

Buckets: Smart Objects For Digital Libraries, Michael L. Nelson Jan 2001

Buckets: Smart Objects For Digital Libraries, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Current discussion of digital libraries (DLs) is often dominated by the merits of the respective storage, search and retrieval functionality of archives, repositories, search engines, search interfaces and database systems. While these technologies are necessary for information management, the information content is more important than the systems used for its storage and retrieval. Digital information should have the same long-term survivability prospects as traditional hardcopy information and should be protected to the extent possible from evolving search engine technologies and vendor vagaries in database management systems. Information content and information retrieval systems should progress on independent paths and make limited …

The Impact Of Intentional Learning Experiences For Personal Spiritual Formation On Seminary Students, Carol M. Tasker Jan 2001

The Impact Of Intentional Learning Experiences For Personal Spiritual Formation On Seminary Students, Carol M. Tasker

Dissertations

Problem. Many seminary students describe their time in seminary as a spiritual desert. Most Protestant seminaries do not provide spiritual formation classes for their students, thinking that such measures are unnecessary or inappropriate for theological education, or assuming that the church is the place for spiritual formation to take place. Nevertheless, pastors are expected to be spiritual leaders, and the pastor’s spirituality is ranked by laity as the highest priority needed by seminary graduates for effective church ministry. A literature survey of theological education shows that, in the last 150 years, students have consistently recognized their need for help …

Remediation Simulation/Optimization Demonstrations, Richard C. Peralta Jan 2001

Remediation Simulation/Optimization Demonstrations, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Applications of simulation/optimization (S/0) software to develop contamination remediation strategies include formal remediation optimization using heads and gradients (hydraulics-based) and concentrations (risk-based) constraints. The six reported cases involve pump and treat systems, or pump, treat and re-inject systems, together termed PAT systems. We used S/0 modeling to perform hydraulic optimization for two of the sites and transport optimization for four. For four of the six sites, other parties used normal simulation (S) modeling alone to develop pumping strategies. Comparing the S/0 model-developed strategies with the S model-developed strategies showed S/0 modeling benefits ranging up to: (a) 25 percent reduction in …

Simulation/Optimization Applications And Software For Optimal Ground-Water And Conjunctive Water Management, Richard C. Peralta Jan 2001

Simulation/Optimization Applications And Software For Optimal Ground-Water And Conjunctive Water Management, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Diverse water management simulation/optimization (S/O) experiences promoted the development of many S/O modeling approaches and models. Several of these are being incorporated within the Simulation/Optimization Modeling System (SOMOS). Non-modeler water scientists or engineers can apply one SOMOS module to optimize field-scale groundwater and conjunctive water management. Experienced groundwater modelers can apply other modules to optimally manage complex heterogeneous aquifer and stream-aquifer systems. SOMOS employs a variety of simulation models and approaches and optimization algorithms to optimize flow and contaminant management. SOMOS or its precursor modules have been well proven in real-world projects. Designed for use by consultants, students, academics, and …

Patch-Clamp Analysis Of Voltage-Activated And Chemically Activated Currents In The Vomeronasal Organ Of Sternotherus Odoratus (Stinkpot/Musk Turtle), D. A. Fadool, M. Wachowiak, J. H. Brann Jan 2001

Patch-Clamp Analysis Of Voltage-Activated And Chemically Activated Currents In The Vomeronasal Organ Of Sternotherus Odoratus (Stinkpot/Musk Turtle), D. A. Fadool, M. Wachowiak, J. H. Brann

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The electrophysiological basis of chemical communication in the specialized olfactory division of the vomeronasal (VN) organ is poorly understood. In total, 198 patch-clamp recordings were made from 42 animals (Sternotherus odoratus, the stinkpot/musk turtle) to study the electrically and chemically activated properties of VN neurons. The introduction of tetramethylrhodamine-conjugated dextran into the VN orifice permitted good visualization of the vomeronasal neural epithelium prior to dissociating it into single neurons. Basic electrical properties of the neurons were measured (resting potential, -54.5 +/- 2.7 mV, N=11; input resistance, 6.7 +/- 1.4 G Omega, N=25; capacitance, 4.2 +/- 0.3 pF, N=22; means +/- …

Y2k, The Apocalypse, And Evangelical Christianity: The Role Of Eschatological Belief In Church Responses, Lisa Graham Mcminn Jan 2001

Y2k, The Apocalypse, And Evangelical Christianity: The Role Of Eschatological Belief In Church Responses, Lisa Graham Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Apocalyptic beliefs in Christianity have endured for two thousand years and on occasion have motivated and justified radical and even revolutionary collective action (Boyer 1992). Why apocalyptic visions are part of some Christians' belief system is grounded in their beliefs about the end times, or eschatologies, that shape church cultures and subsequent behaviors. This paper considers cultural aspects of collective action, applying the concept of frames that give events meaning and inspire and legitimize collective behavior to Christian church responses to Y2K as a recent example of an anticipated apocalyptic event. Five interpretive frames linking eschatological ideation with specific collective …

Chapter 10: Upper-Middle-Class Politics And Policy Outcomes: Does Class Identity Matter?, Herman L. Boschken Jan 2001

Chapter 10: Upper-Middle-Class Politics And Policy Outcomes: Does Class Identity Matter?, Herman L. Boschken

Faculty Publications, School of Management

This chapter in Clark and lipset's book on class in American politics resulted from a multi-day workshop at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in the summer of 1999. The piece reverses the normal causality of class politics. It does not analyze citizens in elections, but government officials creating policies. It asks why policies differ across localities (specifically public transit decisions in 42 U.S. metropolitan areas). It probes how some government officials work with an "upper-middle-class" citizenry in mind, while others do so less. The chapter then tests for differences across localities and finds quite distinct patterns. The chapter …

Measurement And Modelling Of Uranium And Thorium In Natural Waters, Ernily Rachel Unsworth Jan 2001

Measurement And Modelling Of Uranium And Thorium In Natural Waters, Ernily Rachel Unsworth

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Uranium and thorium are the only elements in the actinide series which naturally occur in the environment in sufficient amounts for practical extraction. They are both radiotoxic and chemotoxic to humans due to the effects of the ionising radiation produced by their radioactive decay, the decay of their daughter products, and due to the chemical toxicity resulting from absorption into the body. Thus it is important to be able to quantitatively determine the levels of uranium and thorium in the environment. Measurement of low levels of uramum and thorium in the presence of high levels of inorganic and organic matrix …

Study Of The Effect Of Turbulence On The Properties Of Flocculated Mud, Andrew Manning Jan 2001

Study Of The Effect Of Turbulence On The Properties Of Flocculated Mud, Andrew Manning

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

For the successful management of an estuary, an accurate simulation model predicting sediment transport patterns is a necessity. This requires a knowledge of the vertical mass settling flux (MSF), which is the product of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration and the settling velocity (Ws). However the presence of cohesive sediments (i.e. mud) complicates this description due to the ability of mud particles to flocculate into larger aggregates (floes) which demonstrate faster settling velocities and lower effective densities (pe) than the component cohesive particles. The generation of turbulent shear stress (TSS) within the water column is regarded as having a …

These are computer generated, multi-user, graphical spaces within which people meet, form social groups and interact with each other in real time, typically through the exchange of text or audio messages. Each user is represented within the space by a digital image known as an avatar, which is usually humanoid in form, and is predominantly under the control of the person it represents. This thesisd escribesa creativep roject that is concernedw ith aspectso f social communication between users of "Ws. In particular, an avatar is …

Poetic Anatomy Of The Numinous Creative Passages Into The Self As Beloved, Partou Zia Jan 2001

Poetic Anatomy Of The Numinous Creative Passages Into The Self As Beloved, Partou Zia

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research is shaped by the actual experience of practice: as painter and writer. My preoccupation is with the nodal moment when conscious awareness is suspended, and both the corporal and psychic involvement in realising the work almost transport one to another zone of effectiveness. This zone, which I name as the poetic zone, is where the numinous enters the ordinary. The investigation for a space/place/moment that lies beyond the logic of acceptable discourse can help initiate and give shape to a new vocabulary - visual or literary. By orchestrating a methodology, which functions on several layers, I have endeavoured …

Fatigue Of A Spring Steel With Varying Levels Of Non-Metallic Inclusions, Alan Edwin Lee Holman Jan 2001

Fatigue Of A Spring Steel With Varying Levels Of Non-Metallic Inclusions, Alan Edwin Lee Holman

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Plain specimens of two batches of the commercial spring steel BS 251A58 of nominally identical processing but significantly differing levels of non-metallic inclusion levels, have been tested in rotating bending. The data produced has been analysed against some recent methods for the prediction of fatigue properties in high strength materials containing defects. The materials tested were specifically selected for their disparate cleanliness levels, yielding specimens with differing inclusion distribution and maxima. The morphology of critical inclusions is identical between the two material batches. Material microstructure is tempered martensite with ultimate tensile strength of approximately 2000 MPa, which renders it well …
