Chondrocranium And Visceral Skeleton Of Atelopus Tricolor And Atelophryniscus Chrysophorus, E O. Lavilla, Rafael O. De Sá

Atelopus tricolor and Atelophryniscus chrysophorus have gastromyzophorous tadpoles. Aside from specific differences, the larval chondrocrania and visceral skeletons show several shared character states, including an almost quadrangular, open chondrocranium , cornua trabeculae with expanded tips, cartilago suprarostralis as a single element, a posteriorly projected arcus subocularis quadrati, a closed muscular tunnel, and a simplified branchial basket, with only three pairs of ceratobranchiales. They are compared with diverse character states of suctorial larvae considering them as causally related to the stream life adaptations.

In both In the Heart of the Country (1977) by J. M. Coetzee and The Memoirs of a Survivor (1974) by Doris Lessing, a female narrator fabricates a sanctuary—mental rather than physical—that enables each woman to challenge, deflect, or adapt to a conflict and that shelters her from a hostile, patriarchal society. For Coetzee's narrator (Magda) in In the Heart of the Country, writing, rewriting, and editing provide the necessary devices to establish her asylum in her quest for identity. Depressive Symptoms And Academic Achievement In Fourth Grade Students, Michelle L. Harrison

The relationships among depressive symptoms, peer acceptance, and academic competence were examined in 43 fourth-grade students using a self-report measure of depression (Children's Depression Inventory); a teacher-rated measure of depression (Behavior Assessment System for Children — Teacher Rating Scale); peer acceptance and peer rejection; and grade point average. Results indicated higher levels of self-reported depression than previously found in children of this age. Correlations between self-reports of depression and peer rejection and self-reports of depression and grade point average were significant. The high cost of restoring and managing wetlands warrants careful assessment of their management potential. We designed this study to provide basic information on how seed banks and hydroperiod influence the development of habitat for migratory birds in restored wetlands at Carlyle Lake Wildlife Management Area (CLWMA). The objectives were to: (1) survey the composition of the seed banks; (2) investigate the effects of early- vs. late-drawdowns on the germination and growth of these plants; and (3) monitor the use of these communities by wetland birds during migration and the breeding season. The Effectiveness Of Non-Directive Play Therapy On Decreasing Inappropriate Behavior, Heather M. Sawyer

The present study investigated the effectiveness of non-directive play therapy, operationalized as non-contingent attention (NCA), no-demands, and an enriched environment, on three developmentally normal children with a history of abuse or neglect. A single-case reversal-replication design was employed. Baseline consisted of contingent attention, demands, and a relatively non-enriched environment. Results indicated that for one of the participants, NCA, no-demands, and an enriched environment successfully decreased inappropriate play behaviors. More specifically, destructive and disrupted play behaviors occurred much less frequently in both treatment conditions compared to the two baseline conditions. The other two participants did not show any clear pattern of …

Firefly Flashing Is Controlled By Gating Oxygen To Light-Emitting Cells, G. S. Timmins, F. J. Robb, C. M. Wilmot, S. K. Jackson, H. M. Swartz

Although many aspects of firefly bioluminescence are understood, the mechanism by which adult fireflies produce light as discrete rapid flashes is not. Here we examine the most postulated theory, that flashing is controlled by gating oxygen access to the light-emitting cells (photocytes). According to this theory, the dark state represents repression of bioluminescence by limiting oxygen, which is required for bioluminescence; relief from this repression by transiently allowing oxygen access to the photocytes allows the flash. We show that normobaric hyperoxia releases the repression of light emission in the dark state of both spontaneously flashing and non-flashing fireflies, causing continual …

The field of law and biology is growing rapidly, and the good scholarship typically has much to do with Owen Jones... The general message that Professor Jones disseminates in his articles is important. Law cannot reach peak effectiveness unless it is built on a sound behavioral model, and no model of human nature is ultimately sound unless it is consistent with the insights from behavioral biology. And the beauty of behavioral biology, for one who uses behavioral models, is that it tells us something about human tastes, preferences, and cognitive biases and limitations.

Deviance (Goode, 1997), in a general sense, is behavior that some members of a given society will find “offensive”. It is behavior which brings about, or would bring about if it were discovered, disapproval, punishment, condemnation, or hostility from another. This is any behavior that is likely to get the actor into “trouble”. Deviance is behavior which is considered to be outside the “bounds” of a given group or society. Another definition, in a more working sense, is “any departure from a social norm which does or could provoke sanctions” (p. 37).

Although it has been proposed that plant lectins play a number of roles, the function of these proteins in normal plant growth and development has been unclear. To analyze the functions of putative alfalfa lectin genes, lines of transgenic alfalfa plants expressing approximately half of the open reading frame of MsLEC1 or MsLEC2, in the antisense or sense orientation, were established and analyzed. The antisense plants displayed severe abnormalities in embryogenesis, and both vegetative and reproductive development were perturbed. Some differences were observed between MsLEC1- and MsLEC2-antisense plants, and abnormalities were especially severe during the early stages of development in …

During the first month when a Mormon Apostle and three missionaries arrived to begin proselytizing work in Japan, the local and national press published at least 160 articles on Mormonism, many of the articles appearing on the front page. The media attention was unprecedented for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in that country. Here the author explores the reaction from the Japanese press toward Mormons, the social and historical context that led to such interest, and some of the media controversies that arose. In Thinking from the Han, David Hall and Roger Ames compare Plato's - and Confucius's views of friendship in relation to the question of transcendence and arrive at the sad conclusion that Socrates and Confucius could not be friends. "Socratic irony would not allow the inequality Confucius requires as a means of self-betterment. Confucius would not permit he and Socrates to hold all things in common." The use of surrogate end points has become increasingly common in medical and biological research. This is primarily because, in many studies, the primary end point of interest is too expensive or too difficult to obtain. There is now a large volume of statistical methods for analysing studies with surrogate end point data. However, to our knowledge, there has not been a comprehensive review of these methods to date. In this study, some biological characteristics such as age and sex composition, growth in length and weight, age-length, age-weight and length-weight relationships, condition factor spawning time, age of sexual maturity, and fecundity of Silurus triostegus in Atatürk Dam lake were investigated. The percentage of females was 48.3% and that of males 57.7% out of 623 specimens belonging to age groups I-XI. Isometric growth patterns were proved from the length-weight relationships. It was estimated that the females had higher Lo (202.85 cm) and lower low K (0.046871) values than males (Lo 113.98 cm and K = 0.101972). Mean condition factors of …

A Study On The Feeding Biology Of Laudakia (=Agama) Stellio (L. 1758) (Lacertilia: Agamidae) Populations In The Antalya Region, Serdar Düşen, Mehmet Öz

The feeding biology of Laudakia (=Agama) stellio (L. 1758) was studied using 91 specimens collected from the Antalya region over two consecutive years (1995 and 1996). A total of 1224 prey items were identifed and their frequency of occurrence and percent of diet were tabulated. The majority of the diet consisted of the class Insecta (99.18%), and within this class, Hymenoptera (72.21%) was the major order represented, primarily by the families Formicidae (49.83%) and Apidae (16.74%). In addition to insects, L. stellio feeds on plant material, insect larvae and eggs, and even snails, showing opportunist feeding behavior.

The effect of cold storage on the adult longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson, a koinobiont, solitary and early instar larval endoparasitoid of the Small Wax Moth Achoria grisella Fabr. was investigated. The rearing of both parasitoid and host cultures and experiments related to the effect of storing Apanteles galleriae adults at low temperature (+ 6°C) were conducted at 25 ± 1°C, 60 ± 5% RH under a photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D). Cold storage (+ 6°C) considerably influenced the adult longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of the parasitoid. Experimental evidence showed that 85.27% of adults died after …

A total of 523 C. gariepinus caught in the River Asi were surveyed from October, 1996 to September, 1998 to find out the age distribution throughout the population that varied between 0+ and 5 years of age, with the one year age group observed to be dominant in number. Findings also showed that both sexes started to reach maturity at the age of 1, and all the fishes examined had become mature by the end of the second year. The average diameter of ripened eggs was 1.41 - 1.66 mm. They spawned in a period from May to August when …
