One can hardly imagine a more contentious issue in the American culture wars than the debate over how biological origins should be taught in the public schools. On the one hand, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Center for Science Education, and the American Civil Liberties Union have insisted that any departure from a strictly Darwinian approach to the issue constitutes an attack on science itself, and even an unconstitutional intrusion of religion into the public school science curriculum. Several compelling reports are calling for the improvement of undergraduate education. Their central concern is that colleges and universities are not learning communities, where both faculty and students are engaged in a powerful learning environment. The purpose of this study was to learn how faculty are addressing these concerns by approaching teaching as a scholarly activity. The case studies and qualitative analyses of the data revealed that diverse educational institutions and faculty from different disciplines are approaching teaching as an investigative process. Eighteen 200 ha plots were established in the Monongahela National Forest (MNF), Pocahontas County, West Virginia, and in the George Washington National Forest (GWNF), Augusta County, Virginia. From 1995-1999 Malaise traps and foliage pruning were used to collect Symphyta adults and larvae. During 1997 and 1998, six plots each were aerially treated with nucleopolyhedrosis virus (Gypchek™) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki. The remaining six plots were left untreated. Adult Symphyta richness and abundance were studied using Malaise traps. Each plot contained two Malaise traps, located at different elevations, which were monitored from early May through mid-August of 1995 through 1999. …

A Comparative Study Of The Feeding Ecology Of Chelonia Mydas (Green Turtle) And The Incidental Ingestion Of Prorocentrum Spp, Karen Gayle Holloway Adkins

The diets of green turtles from five dissimilar aggregations of juvenile C. mydas on the East Coast of Florida were analyzed. C. mydas were captured by tangle net from four of the study sites and a dietary sample was collected by an esophageal flushing technique. The gut content of stranded individuals was collected for the fifth site. The vegetation in these study areas differs in varying degrees of abundance and diversity. Analysis of the samples revealed the alga types preferred by green turtles from each population and provided the basis for examination of similarities and differences in their diets.

This work describes the use of a broadband spectral source for nonlinear spectroscopy to characterize various materials with potential applications in confocal microscopy, biological sample markers, optical limiting devices and optical switches. The goal is to study the spectrum of nonlinear absorption and the dispersion of nonlinear refraction as well as the dynamics of the nonlinearities by means of femtosecond excite-­probe experiments.

West Virginia aquaculture is an expanding industry currently characterized by smallscale, widely dispersed farms. In 2000, state sales of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss reached US$611,000. To facilitate future expansion with a focus on product quality as well as production efficiency, identification of limiting factors and new or alternative management techniques are needed. The evolutionary hypothesis of mate selection was tested by combining traits deemed as evolutionarily valued (Cramer, Schaeffer Et Reid, 1996) with pictures showing facial features deemed as physically attractive according to the evolutionary hypothesis (Buss, 1989; Singh, 1995). Traits and pictures not congruent with the evolutionary hypothesis were also presented. Four stimulus persons were presented to ninety-one male subjects and 114 female subjects who were asked to rate their desirability as a mate. The results showed a main effect for stimulus condition, with the physical attractiveness pictures receiving the highest ratings when combined with the valued evolutionary traits, F (3, …

There are genetic similarities between the biennial growth habit of Hyoscyamus niger (H. niger) and winter annual ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, including the response to demethylating agents. One focus of our research group at Marquette is to determine whether FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) homologs or FLC-related MADS-box genes are involved in biennialism of H. niger. This review also summarizes our initial characterization of expression profiles of 4 groups of H. niger MADS-box genes. The First Circuit reversed the district court's order dismissing Lucas Rosa's claim against Park West Bank. The appeals court's reversal seems to be part of an emerging nationwide rejection of cases from the 1970s and 1980s. In these cases courts summarily dismissed sex discrimination claims brought by transgender plaintiffs, no matter how squarely the facts appeared to present a clear-cut case of discrimination based on sex. This created that appeared to be a "transgender" exception to sex discrimination law. Little is known about incidence, risk factors, and etiology of acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI) and pneumonia among the very young children from the rural communities of the developing countries. This study examined incidence and risk factors for ALRI and etiology and risk factors for pneumonia in a group of infants in Bangladesh. A cohort of 252 newborns was prospectively followed from birth to 24 months of age. Data on respiratory symptoms and feeding habits were collected routinely by household visit. Objectives . This population-based study was conducted to examine the effects of various technologies, that evolved in the late 1980s and early 1990s to improve infant survival, on time to death. This report presents the results of a preliminary study that examines several critical coastal issues for New Hampshire including sea level fluctuations (past, present and future), shoreline migrations, and tidal flooding. Included are: 1) an analysis of sea level changes over the Holocene and resulting shoreline migrations, 2) an assessment of low-lying areas with elevations below selected tidal flooding datums in coastal areas, and 3) an assessment of increases in low-lying areas that are potentially at risk to tidal flooding over the next century due to sea level rise.
