Thymosin fraction 5 (TF5), comprised of an array of small molecular weight peptides, partially purified from the adult bovine thymus gland, contains multiple biologically active humoral factors. TF5 influences T cell differentiation, lymphokine production and restores immune deficiencies in a variety of animal models in vitro and in vivo. Because TF5 generally enhances immune reactivity, we examined the effects of TF5 on the proliferation of HL-60 human promyelocytic leukemia cells. Direct viable dye cell counting, the MTT reaction, and the clonogenic potential of HL-60 cells were used to determine cell proliferation. The potency and efficacy of TF5 for the inhibition …

Utilization of poor quality waters in the urban landscape has the potential of saving large quantities of good quality water for higher priority uses. Bernudagrass in particular is well suited to be irrigated with poorer quality water. A two-year field study was conducted to determine the long-term effects of applying shallow saline aquifer water to two turfgrass sports fields. The water (0.69-- 3.4 dSm-1) was applied using cyclic irrigation during peak demand months (May--Oct). Treatments consisted of cycling saline water through the existing irrigation systems. Craniofacial Morphology And The Consequences Of Intentional Cranial Deformation Among Prehistoric Andean Populations, Matthew Paul Rhode

This research examined the cultural practice of cranial deformation (annular and anteroposterior), and its effects on 27 craniometric measurements and biodistances among 350 prehistoric crania from the Azapa valley of northern Chile. Included among these 27 measurements were nine facial measurements previously considered to be unaffected by deformation. One-way ANOVA, Bonferroni multiple comparisons, and discriminant function analyses indicated that out of the 27 measurements were seven centrally located facial and basilar measurements unaffected by deformation: orbital breadth, palate (maxillo-alveolar) breadth, nasal breadth, basion-prosthion length, cranial base length, foramen magnum length, and foramen magnum breath. This thesis examines portrayals of terrorism in the New York Times during the 1990s. Using ethnographic content analysis, I analyze several dimensions of coverage including the emphasis given in articles to violence, the characterizations used to describe terrorists and their actions, the sources of information used in the reports, whether the cause of the terrorists are addressed, and the character of coverage for men and women terrorists. I argue that the portrayals focus on the most sensational and dramatic aspects of terrorism and authority's interpretations of the groups; they fail to provide readers an analysis of causes, contexts, and structural …

Inhibiting cancer cell migration could greatly improve the prognosis of cancer patients. Prior to commercialization of the Plopper laboratory designed a 96-well plate, we optimized our in vitro migration and cell viability assays to meet the standards set by the National Cancer Institute for use in a large-scale drug screen for anti-migration compounds. Using these assays, we measured the cytotoxicity and migration-inhibiting effect of dimethyl sulfuoxide, a drug solvent, in three cancer and one non-cancer cell lines. Next, we investigated plant-derived compounds called monoterpenes, known chemopreventive/chemotherapeutic agents, for non-cytotoxic, migration-inhibiting properties in MCF-10A normal and MDA-MB 435 cancerous breast cells. …

This thesis investigated parameters affecting perchlorate biodegradation in the Las Vegas Wash area in Las Vegas, NV. Perchlorate is known to interfere with the functioning of the thyroid gland of humans. Perchlorate concentrations along the Las Vegas Wash were found to range from zero to 1000 ppb, while perchlorate concentrations in the contaminated seepage were approximately 100 ppm. Microbial counts in 30 water samples from the Las Vegas Wash and the contaminated seepage indicated that indigenous perchlorate-reducing microbes are ubiquitous and present in reasonable numbers. In the contaminated area, natural perchlorate biodegradation seems to be limited by at least three …

Oxygen isotope analysis of shell material from the Camarones West Shell Midden and from the site of Quiani has revealed that year-round collection of shellfish for food by the people of the Chinchorro Culture was not practiced. Additional shell demographics from the site of Quiani further support the oxygen isotope results. Radiocarbon dating revealed that the midden sample spanned the Classic Chinchorro and Transitional Chinchorro epochs, from 5590 to 3830 B. P. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is a commonly cultivated turfgrass in Southern Nevada, one of North America's most arid climates. Recognized for its drought tolerance, tall fescue is nonetheless a significant water user in Southern Nevada. Since outdoor water use represents approximately 64% of all regional demand and peaks in the hot summer, efficient use of water on turfgrass such as tall fescue can make a significant contribution to water conservation as well as offset peak demand. This study examined mediating factors that lead to, or buffer against, development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after child maltreatment. Fifty-five children aged 8--17 years voluntarily completed self-report questionnaires and a structured diagnostic interview. It was hypothesized that (1) chronicity and severity of abuse amplify PTSD risk when a child has limited support networks, ineffective coping, external locus of control, affect dysregulation, and a dysfunctional family; (2) key family and victim characteristics would help to ameliorate effects of traumatic abuse; (3) the combination of precipitating and prophylactic factors would determine the effectiveness of managing traumatic maltreatment. The purpose of this descriptive study was to describe parental perceptions of their preschool child's weight status. Pender's Revised Health Promotion Model was used to guide this study. A convenience sample of 275 parents, who had a child between the age of 2--5 years, was obtained from Women, Infant's and Children (WIC) clinics in a Southwestern city, after informed consent was obtained. The sample had a high number of Hispanics (80%) compared to non-Hispanics (20%). It was found that overall parents perceive their child's weight accurately. Mentoring is a communication process where an experienced guide helps a novice adjust to new surroundings. The goal is to assist newcomers with difficult transitions. The literature review determined that mentoring has recently evolved to academia with a desire to aid students and faculty. A need arose to examine peer communication between graduate students. This study specifically examined peer mentoring among graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Non-intrusive geophysical investigations, both seismic and electrical, were performed at several locations on the Las Vegas Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, Nevada, along with intrusive drilling. These investigations were conducted to determine whether it is possible use geophysical methods to detect piping-induced cavities and shallow inclusions such as calcific nodules and horizons known as caliche in dry, desert soil, while at the same time characterizing the mechanical structure of the soil and distribution of soil moisture for engineering purposes. This thesis examines factors affecting recidivism (shelter reentry) among two-parent households, female-headed households, and single women, through a study of selected households utilizing a transitional shelter for the homeless in Las Vegas, Nevada. The paper touches on the history of homelessness in America, and explores some of the factors related to the increase in homelessness on the national and local level. It examines the shelter system---in particular, the provision of transitional shelter---as the primary intervention designed to return individuals and families to self-sufficiency. This study examined whether groups of adolescent girls, who society defines as having a positive body image, actually feel positive about their own body image and how they express it culturally. Cheerleaders and dancers were chosen as accessible groups that embodied the ideal body image as defined by popular Western teen culture. Qualitative analysis was conducted using interviews, observations, and focus groups to determine how these groups felt about their body image and how they defined a positive image. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between various family variables and anxiety sensitivity (AS) in a community sample of 159 youth ages 7--18 years and their parents. Youth completed self-report measures of anxiety and AS and parents completed measures of AS, attachment, psychopathology, family environment, and parenting practices. The primary purpose was to examine the extent to which these family variables predicted child AS. Results indicated that a combination of family factors including parenting style, parental psychopathology, and family environment significantly predicted child AS. This qualitative study integrated literature and personal interviews to examine issues of employment among people from the transgender population. By incorporating interviews, employment is addressed from the transgender person's reference point. This allows for integral examination of personal or internal and environmental or external factors that impact the transgender person while seeking or maintaining employment. In a study of seven people, common themes appeared to influence employment such as the ability to pass, coming out and transitioning, employer and type of employment, stigmas faced such as being "outed," and attitude. Rowett nude rats were injected intra-cranially with varying concentrations of 5-aminolevulinic acid (10, 20, 99, 199, 398 mM) and its hexylester (6.6, 13, 66, 132, 265 mM). Toxicity effects of these compounds were examined based on animal behavior and respiratory distress. It was determined that the maximum tolerable dose for intra-cranial injection is 99 mM 5-Aminolevulinic acid and 66 mM h-ALA; Human glioma spheroids were grown in vitro. After incubation, spheroids were sized (250--350 mum) and injected into the rat brain (10 spheroids per injection). The mushroom body miniature B ( mbmB) mutation has documented defects in adult mushroom body anatomy, olfactory memory and female fertility. In this thesis I report that mbmB mutants also have reduced viability and growth rate. I further demonstrate, using the mushroom body cell marker dachshund, that loss of mbmB function does not affect the early development of mushroom body neuroectoderm and neuroblasts. Additionally, I found the observed delay in growth and reduced viability were not manifested during embryonic development; Courtship behavior assays and immunohistochemical techniques were used to investigate causes of mbmB female sterility.
