The temporal dynamics of electroporation of cells subjected to ultrashort voltage pulses are studied based on a coupled scheme involving the Laplace, Nernst-Plank, and Smoluchowski equations. A pore radius dependent energy barrier for ionic transport, accounts for cellular variations. It is shown that a finite time delay exists in pore formation, and leads to a transient overshoot of the transmembrane potential V_mem beyond 1.0 V. Pore resealing is shown to consist of an initial fast process, a 10⁻⁴s delay, followed by a much slower closing at a time constant of about 10 ⁻¹s. This establishes a …

The promise of new genetic research is the ability to prevent, treat, and cure a wide range of physical and mental disorders-both monogenic and complex disorders. While astonishing progress has been made in gene discovery and the development of genetic tests, progress has been much slower in developing medicalinterventions. Consequently, there is likely to be a gap of varying and indetermi- nate time-lasting years or decades-between the ability to identify and predict genetic risk and the ability to prevent, treat, or cure the condition. Health-care and financial planning for the client with diminished capacity requires a holistic approach that includes consideration of the realities of dementia progression, cultural and linguistic diversity, capacity that may vary over time, issues of surrogate decision making, and recognition of the client's vulnerability to abuse, neglect, exploitation and undue influence. A goal of legal planning should be to limit the use of guardianship to the greatest extent possible.

Globally, millions of leprosy patients suffer irreversible peripheral nerve damage resulting in blindness or other disabilities as a consequence of Mycobacterium leprae infection. Schwann cells, the neural target of M. leprae, have a central role in leprosy histopathology including axonotrophy, altered myelin architecture and demyelination. The mechanisms of nerve damage have not been fully elucidated but appear to be the direct result of M. leprae within Schwann cells or a combined effect with an aggressive immune response to M. leprae within the nerves. Chitinases From The Plant Disease Biocontrol Agent, Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia C3, Z. Zhang, Gary Yuen, Gautam Sarath, A. R. Penheiter

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain C3, a biocontrol agent of Bipolaris sorokiniana in turfgrass, produced chitinases in broth media containing chitin. Chitinases were partially purified from culture fluid by ammonium sulfate precipitation and chitin affinity chromatography. The chromatography fraction with the highest specific chitinase activity was inhibitory to conidial germination and germ-tube elongation of B. sorokiniana, but it was less inhibitory than the protein fraction or the raw culture filtrate. The fraction exhibited strong exochitinase and weak endochitinase activity. Optimum temperature and pH for chitinase activity were 45 to 50°C and 4.5 to 5.0, respectively. Identification Of Seed Gall Nematodes Of Agronomic And Regulatory Concern With Pcr-Rflp Of Its1, Thomas O. Powers, Allen L. Szalanski, P. G. Mullin, T. S. Harris, T. Bertozzi, J. A. Griesbach

A molecular analysis of eight described species of seed gall nematode, along with six undescribed isolates from different hosts, has revealed a strong association between nucleotide sequence polymorphism and host status. Each anguinid nematode associated with a unique host produced a unique PCR-RFLP pattern for the ITS1 region. Anguina species that had been synonymized in the past, Anguina agrostis, A. funesta, and A. wevelli (Afrina wevelli), were readily discriminated. Two undescribed species from northern New South Wales and southeastern South Australia, reported to be vectors of Rathyaibacter toxicus in the disease called ‘‘floodplain staggers,’’ were differentiated …
