Development Of Predictors For Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Activity Using Atmospheric Stability Indices, Kenneth C. Venzke Mar 2001

Development Of Predictors For Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Activity Using Atmospheric Stability Indices, Kenneth C. Venzke

Theses and Dissertations

A detailed examination was performed on several commonly applied atmospheric stability indices and lightning activity from 1993 to 2000 to determine the indices usefulness as predictive tools for determining cloud-to-ground lightning activity. Predetermined radii of 50 nautical miles around upper-air stations in the Midwest U.S. were used for the lightning summaries. Also explored is an improvement upon the commonly accepted thresholds of the stability indices as general thunderstorm indicators. An improvement was found and new threshold ranges were developed for relating stability index values to lightning occurrence. Traditional statistical regression methods failed to find a significant predictive relationship. By examining …

Vertical And Horizontal Transcendence, Ursula Goodenough Mar 2001

Vertical And Horizontal Transcendence, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Transcendence is explored from two perspectives: the traditional concept wherein the origination of the sacred is “out there,” and the alternate concept wherein the sacred originates “here.” Each is evaluated from the perspectives of aesthetics and hierarchy. Both forms of transcendence are viewed as essential to the full religious life.

The Effects Of Buffer And Temperature Feedback On The Oceanic Uptake Of Co2, Chuixiang Yi, Peng Gong, Ming Xu, Ye Qi Mar 2001

The Effects Of Buffer And Temperature Feedback On The Oceanic Uptake Of Co2, Chuixiang Yi, Peng Gong, Ming Xu, Ye Qi

Publications and Research

The feedback between climate and carbon cycle systems is critical to the prediction of future CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and the capacity of the oceans to take up CO2 from the atmosphere. We calculated the magnitudes of the potential feedback between the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration, the carbonate chemistry of the oceans (via a buffer factor), and the global temperature. We find that the magnitude of the buffer feedback depends strongly on the level of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the oceans and increases rapidly with the increase of the atmospheric CO …

Mapping Weekly Rangeland Vegetation Productivity Using Modis Algorithms, Matthew Clark Reeves, Jerome C. Winslow, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

The great spatial extent of rangelands combined with recent emphasis on rangeland health has prompted a need for more efficient and cost effective management tools. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor of the Earth Observing System (EOS) will offer improved and more timely monitoring of rangeland vegetation, and, unlike any previous satellite sensor, the publicly available MODIS data stream will include estimates of rangeland productivity. These estimations of rangeland productivity can be used regionally for measuring biomass production and will be available every eight-days, with global coverage at 1- km^ resolution. MODIS derived estimates of rangeland productivity combine remote …

A Dynamical Systems Investigation Of Lower Extremity Coordination During Running Over Obstacles, Nikolaos Stergiou, Jody L. Jensen, Barry T. Bates, Shane D. Scholten, George Tzetzis

Journal Articles

Objective. To investigate intralimb coordination during running over a level surface and over obstacles of three different heights.

Design. The phasing relationships between the foot and leg motions in the frontal plane, and the shank and thigh motions in the sagittal plane were used to compare patterns of coordination.

Background. The coordinated actions of lower extremity segments are necessary to absorb the impact forces generated during running. The behavioral patterns of these segments can be studied under changing task demands using analysis techniques from the Dynamical Systems Theory.

Methods. Ten subjects ran at their self-selected pace …

Working Memory And Disinhibition In Children With Adhd, Nicholas Dietlein Mar 2001

Working Memory And Disinhibition In Children With Adhd, Nicholas Dietlein

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This research sought to test predictions from Barkley's (1997) theory of disinhibition in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). To this end, the performance differences among younger and older children with and without ADHD were measured. The testing paradigm used in this study was originally developed by Hale, Bronik, and Fry (1997), who sought to measure the verbal and spatial working memory differences in school age children. In this study, ADHD children performed significantly worse on the tasks than did non-ADHD children, indicating that the working memory of the children with ADHD was more subject to interference. Also, younger children performed …

A Precautionary Tale: The International Trade Implications Of Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In Australia And New Zealand, Denise M. Lietz Mar 2001

A Precautionary Tale: The International Trade Implications Of Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In Australia And New Zealand, Denise M. Lietz

Washington International Law Journal

The current international debate surrounding the development of genetically modified ("GM") foods centers around the selection of appropriate regulations to control the new technology's potential food safety risks. Australia and New Zealand have used a precautionary approach to develop their regulatory system for GM foods—a system that will soon include a stringent labeling requirement for all foods containing GM ingredients. The United States, on the other hand, has rejected the precautionary approach to regulating GM foods and does not require mandatory labeling of most GM foods. These differing national regulations may lead to restrictions on the importation of many U.S. …

Assessment Of Immune System Involvement In Tourette Syndrome, Ashley Dawn Levine Mar 2001

Assessment Of Immune System Involvement In Tourette Syndrome, Ashley Dawn Levine

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Tourette syndrome (TS) is currently hypothesized to be the result of genetic and immunological components. This study investigated whether TS subjects produce IgG and IgA antibodies that bind to caudate nucleus, hippocampus, frontal cortex, cerebellum, thalamus, globus pallidus interior, exterior and putamen. Thirty- two children (14 TS, 7 family control, and 11 non-family control) and thirty-nine adults (11 TS, 14 family control, and 14 non-family control) were studied. Immunofluorescent studies were performed on basal ganglia tissue using serum from TS children and their family members. Brain antigens were prepared as two fractions (supernatant and pellet) and used as targets for …

Structural Studies Of Scallop Abductin, A Compressible Elastomer That Translates Hydrophobic Interactions To Elasticity, Felipe Jimenez Jr. Mar 2001

Structural Studies Of Scallop Abductin, A Compressible Elastomer That Translates Hydrophobic Interactions To Elasticity, Felipe Jimenez Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Abductin is a natural elastomer found as the major component of the elastic hinge ligament in marine scallops. Until now, very little was known about the structure and function of this compressible elastomer. Biochemical studies of a synthetic 25 amino acid peptide of abductin produces fibers that assemble into a gel matrix at room temperature. Further investigation of this phenomenon via temperature-dependent turbidimetry revealed that this peptide self-assembles or aggregates at 23 °C. Secondary structural studies of this peptide at different temperatures revealed that it undergoes an inverse temperature transition much like soluble elastin peptides. Replacing phenylalanine with alanine in …

Branching Exponent Heterogeneity And Wall Shear Stress Distribution In Vascular Trees, Kelly Lynn Karau, Gary S. Krenz, Christopher A. Dawson Mar 2001

Branching Exponent Heterogeneity And Wall Shear Stress Distribution In Vascular Trees, Kelly Lynn Karau, Gary S. Krenz, Christopher A. Dawson

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A bifurcating arterial system with Poiseuille flow can function at minimum cost and with uniform wall shear stress if the branching exponent (z) = 3 [where z is defined by (D 1)z = (D 2)z + (D 3)z; D 1 is the parent vessel diameter and D 2 and D 3 are the two daughter vessel diameters at a bifurcation]. Because wall shear stress is a physiologically transducible force, shear stress-dependent control over vessel diameter would appear to provide a means for preserving this optimal structure through maintenance …
