Ice Storm Damage To Virginia Coastal Plain Forests During The Christmas 1998 Ice Storm, Peter Elstner, Stewart Ware Apr 2001

Ice Storm Damage To Virginia Coastal Plain Forests During The Christmas 1998 Ice Storm, Peter Elstner, Stewart Ware

Virginia Journal of Science

On December 23-25, 1998, a major ice storm struck southeastern Virginia. The storm-deposited glaze ice felled trees and limbs, causing a power outage and highway blockage. Between February and April, 1999, we recorded occurrence, severity, and type of damage to trees over 2.5 cm dbh in nine mostly gently sloping plots in Matoaka Woods at the College of William and Mary. Frequency and severity of damage varied with species and with size of trees. Canopy damage occurred in 75% of large Fagus grandifolia trees, but in only 6% of small Sassafras albidum stems. As a group, small (2.5 to 15 …

Comparison Of Spawning And Non-Spawning Substrates In Nests Of Species Of Exoglossum And Nocomis (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae), Eugene G. Maurakis, Terre D. Green Apr 2001

Comparison Of Spawning And Non-Spawning Substrates In Nests Of Species Of Exoglossum And Nocomis (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae), Eugene G. Maurakis, Terre D. Green

Virginia Journal of Science

Percent composition of pebble size classes from spawning and non-spawning substrates of nests were used to test the hypothesis that distribution of pebble sizes is random in nests of Exoglossum laurae, Exoglossum maxillingua, Nocomis leptocephalus, Nocomis micropogon, Nocomis platyrhynchus, and Nocomis raneyi in Virginia. In nests of the two species of Exoglossum, spawning areas (i.e., upstream bases of nests) contain significantly greater amounts of the 6.0 mm size class, and significantly smaller amounts of the 2.5 mm size class of stones than do non-spawning areas. Spawning areas (i.e., pits) in nests of N. leptocephalus contain …

Canine And Feline Parvoviruses Can Use Human Or Feline Transferrin Receptors To Bind, Enter, And Infect Cells, John S. L. Parker, William J. Murphy, Dai Wang, Stephen J. O'Brien, Colin R. Parrish Apr 2001

Canine And Feline Parvoviruses Can Use Human Or Feline Transferrin Receptors To Bind, Enter, And Infect Cells, John S. L. Parker, William J. Murphy, Dai Wang, Stephen J. O'Brien, Colin R. Parrish

Biology Faculty Articles

Canine parvovirus (CPV) enters and infects cells by a dynamin-dependent, clathrin-mediated endocytic pathway, and viral capsids colocalize with transferrin in perinuclear vesicles of cells shortly after entry (J. S. L. Parker and C. R. Parrish, J. Virol. 74:1919–1930, 2000). Here we report that CPV and feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), a closely related parvovirus, bind to the human and feline transferrin receptors (TfRs) and use these receptors to enter and infect cells. Capsids did not detectably bind or enter quail QT35 cells or a Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell-derived cell line that lacks any TfR (TRVb cells). However, capsids bound and …

Scientific Uncertainty And Causation In Tort Law, Mark Geistfeld Apr 2001

Scientific Uncertainty And Causation In Tort Law, Mark Geistfeld

Vanderbilt Law Review

Tort cases involving scientific uncertainty frequently present courts with a difficult causation issue. In the paradigmatic case, the available scientific evidence indicates that a substance might be hazardous, but does not establish that the substance is hazardous.' When presented with such evidence, courts must decide whether the plaintiff has adequately proven that her injury was tortiously caused by the substance.

This causal issue potentially arises whenever we do not fully understand how a substance interacts with the body and produces an adverse health outcome. We do not, for example, adequately understand the etiology of cancer.2 To assess whether a substance …

Oceans Act: Uncharted Seas For Offshore Development In Atlantic Canada?, Aldo Chircop, Bruce A. Marchand

Dalhousie Law Journal

Canada's Oceans Act, now five years old, is a ground-breaking piece of legislation in marine law which provides a framework for the development of a national oceans strategy, integrated planning and management, and institutional responsibilities. In this article, the authors review the Act and its issues and argue that the uncertainties found there provide opportunities for participants in the Atlantic Canada offshore oil and gas industry to influence the development of an oceans policy, legal and institutional framework that accommodates all interests.

Offshore Oil And Gas Facility Decommissioning In Nova Scotia And Newfoundland, Phillip Abraham

Dalhousie Law Journal

While planning for the ultimate decommissioning of Atlantic Canada offshore oil and gas facilities is a necessary requirement of project approval, this issue has not yet graduated to the level of attention it receives in other parts of the world with more mature offshore petroleum industries. In this article, the author reviews some decommissioning methods and examines the international and domestic law applicable to the decommissioning of oil and gas facilities on the continental shelf offshore Atlantic Canada.

Energy Budgets, Growth Rates, And The Rmal Constraints: Toward An Integrative Approach To The Study Of Life-History Variation, Peter H. Niewiarowski Apr 2001

Energy Budgets, Growth Rates, And The Rmal Constraints: Toward An Integrative Approach To The Study Of Life-History Variation, Peter H. Niewiarowski

Biology Faculty Research

Variation in thermal constraints on activity has been hypothesized to be an important ecological source of geographic variation in growth rates of juvenile eastern fence lizards Sceloporus undulatus. However, most of the evidence to support this hypothesis is either inferential or indirect. In this study, I quantitatively compared thermal constraints on activity and their relationship to growth rates of free-ranging juvenile fence lizards from two extremes of the range of variation in growth rate (Nebraska and New Jersey) used in a reciprocal transplant experiment. I also examined energy allocation made to growth and storage by yearling lizards. Reduced growth rates …

Optimal Shape Design Of Steadily-Loaded Journal Bearings Using Genetic Algorithms, Sulaymon Eshkabilov Apr 2001

Optimal Shape Design Of Steadily-Loaded Journal Bearings Using Genetic Algorithms, Sulaymon Eshkabilov

Theses

This thesis investigates the use of genetic algorithms to optimize the shape of an ungrooved fluid-film journal bearing under steady load and steady speed so that it can carry the maximum possible load while constrained to maintaining an adequate minimum film thickness. The shape of the bearing sleeve is assumed to vary only in the radial direction, and the shape is represented by linear interpolation of three film thickness design specifications along the bearing sleeve. Each set of film thickness specifications in the design space is encoded into a binary string called a chromosome, and a set of chromosomes makes …

Disease Emergence In Birds: Challenges For The Twenty-First Century, Milton Friend, Robert G. Mclean, F. Joshua Dein Apr 2001

Disease Emergence In Birds: Challenges For The Twenty-First Century, Milton Friend, Robert G. Mclean, F. Joshua Dein

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) conjunctivitis is an example of the rapid geographic spread that can result from disease emergence in naive populations. That event was neither novel nor transient relative to its occurrence or effects. Disease emergence and reemergence are hallmarks of the latter part of the twentieth century (Center for Disease Control 1994, Levins et al. 1994, DaSilva and Laccarino 1999, Gratz 1999). Current examples involving domestic animals include the problems in Europe with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or ‘‘mad cow disease’’) (Brown 2001) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) (Kitching 1999). Human health has been affected by diseases caused …
