A Comparison Of Methods For Detection Of Qualitative Interaction In Multicenter Trials, Boyd Jay Hanson Apr 2001

A Comparison Of Methods For Detection Of Qualitative Interaction In Multicenter Trials, Boyd Jay Hanson

Dissertations

This research evaluated and compared three methods for the detection of qualitative treatment-by-center interaction proposed by Azzalini and Cox, Gail and Simon and Ciminera et al., through the analysis of simulated data for multicenter studies of two and three centers with two treatments. The effect of unequal sample size and the presence of an overall treatment effect on characteristics of the methods were examined.

The approach, underlying assumptions and theory of the three methods differ. For this study, they were adapted to establish a common basis for evaluation, thus allowing a meaningful comparison of the methods. For the test presented …

A Distance Education Collaboration: The Learning Café Experience, Miriam B. Deutch, Beth Evans, Lori Scarlatos Apr 2001

A Distance Education Collaboration: The Learning Café Experience, Miriam B. Deutch, Beth Evans, Lori Scarlatos

Publications and Research

As distance education collaborations between high schools and colleges increase, there is a concern that little has been done to assess the quality and effectiveness of the resulting virtual courses (Carr & Young, 1999). Yet it is equally important to address or consider the many challenges and issues of the collaboration itself. How these issues are addressed will seriously impact the success of any college distance education project in collaboration with other institutions of learning, including K-12 schools, community centers, and private industry. This article is about collaboration issues between high schools and colleges. It focuses on what the developers …

Confronting Disease In A Global Arena, Lauren Z. Asher Apr 2001

Confronting Disease In A Global Arena, Lauren Z. Asher

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note argues that the global surge in infectious diseases necessitates the integration of human rights principles into international law to ensure effective and equitable responses to public health crises. It emphasizes the critical role of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Health Regulations (IHR) in addressing these challenges, while highlighting the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms, standardized funding, and universal adherence to health standards. The analysis underscores the importance of balancing public health measures with individual rights, particularly in areas such as quarantine, privacy, and mandatory treatment.

Dna Typing: Emerging Or Neglected Issues, Edward J. Imwinkelried, D.H. Kaye Apr 2001

Dna Typing: Emerging Or Neglected Issues, Edward J. Imwinkelried, D.H. Kaye

Washington Law Review

DNA typing has had a major impact on the criminal justice system. There are hundreds of opinions and thousands of cases dealing with DNA evidence. Yet, at virtually every stage of the process, there are important issues that are just emerging or that have been neglected. At the investigative stage, courts have barely begun to focus on the legal limitations on the power of the police to obtain samples directly from suspects and to use the data from DNA samples in various ways. Issues such as the propriety of "DNA dragnets" (in which large numbers of individuals in a geographic …

Abp1 Is Required For Organized Cell Elongation And Division In Arabidopsis Embryogenesis, Hemayet Ullah Apr 2001

Abp1 Is Required For Organized Cell Elongation And Division In Arabidopsis Embryogenesis, Hemayet Ullah

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

To directly address the function of a putative auxin receptor designated ABP1, a reverse genetic approach was taken to identify and characterize ABP1 mutant alleles in Arabidopsis. A homozygous null mutation in ABP1 confers embryo lethality. Null mutant embryos develop normally until the early stages of the globular embryo but are unable to make the transition to a bilaterally symmetrical structure because cells fail to elongate. Cell division was also aberrant both in the suspensor and embryo proper. Antisense suppression of ABP1 in tobacco cells causes slow proliferation and eliminates auxin-induced cell elongation and reduces cell division. The complete lack …

Characterization Of Murine Cytomegalovirus M142 And M143 Essential Gene Products, Bridget Linette Dalton Apr 2001

Characterization Of Murine Cytomegalovirus M142 And M143 Essential Gene Products, Bridget Linette Dalton

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a species-specific virus belonging to the Herpesviridae family. This DNA virus causes severe disease or even death in newborns and immunosuppressed patients. Murine CMV (MCMV) provides an opportunity to study the role of various viral products in replication and pathology in the natural host. Successful replication of CMV in the host depends upon the expression of a cascade of viral genes: immediate early (IE), early (E), and late (L). To date only three MCMV IE proteins have been characterized (IE1, IE2 and IE3). Our laboratory recently identified a novel IE gene region within the Hind III I …

Psychophysiological Measures And Performance Effects In An Adaptive Sustained Attention Task, Gerald Alan Hadley Apr 2001

Psychophysiological Measures And Performance Effects In An Adaptive Sustained Attention Task, Gerald Alan Hadley

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This experiment examined the effect of a biocybernetic system that had been successfully used to control an adaptive automation compensatory tracking task (Freeman, Mikulka, Prinzel, & Scerbo, 1999; Pope, Bogart, & Bartolome, 1995). The present study applied this adaptive automation system to a vigilance task. Recordings of EEG activity were used to derive an index of task engagement, beta/(alpha+ theta). A training session was used to establish a baseline level of this index. Index levels above baseline reflected an increase in arousal, while levels below baseline indicated decreased arousal. Three groups (production, reception, and control) performed the task which presented …

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Short-Term Fine Root Dynamics In A Barrier Island Dune Community, John Walter Hutton Apr 2001

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Short-Term Fine Root Dynamics In A Barrier Island Dune Community, John Walter Hutton

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Fine root dynamics are an important yet poorly understood component of terrestrial ecosystems. In recent years a number of researchers have focused on fine root dynamics; their work has looked at patterns across one or multiple growing seasons on a scale of monthly measures. The purpose of this study was to add to the overall understanding by looking at fine root dynamics on a shorter temporal scale. Minirhizotron observation tubes were used to assess the effect of nitrogen fertilization on short-term fine root dynamics in a nutrient limited, barrier island dune system. Root length elongation and mortality rates followed expected …

Detection Of Aneuploidy For Chromosomes 7 And 8 Using Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization In Patients With Aplastic Anemia And Sequencing Of The Mitotic Checkpoint Gene Hbub1, Laura Jane Aridgides Apr 2001

Detection Of Aneuploidy For Chromosomes 7 And 8 Using Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization In Patients With Aplastic Anemia And Sequencing Of The Mitotic Checkpoint Gene Hbub1, Laura Jane Aridgides

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Aplastic anemia (AA) is characterized by complete bone marrow failure. Progression to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) occurs frequently. At the time of transformation, cytogenetic abnormalities are common. Detection of cytogenetic abnormalities prior to leukemic transformation may indicate future disease progression. Karyotype analysis is the current method of choice to evaluate chromosome aberrations. However, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is more sensitive in detecting these abnormalities.

hBUB1, a mitotic spindle checkpoint gene, was shown to be mutated in two colorectal cancer cell lines with high levels of aneuploidy (Cahill, et al., 1998). Although theoretically possible, conclusive …

The Influence Of Race On Ethical Decision-Making Regarding Nonsexual Dual Relationships, Beatrice Antly Tatem Apr 2001

The Influence Of Race On Ethical Decision-Making Regarding Nonsexual Dual Relationships, Beatrice Antly Tatem

Dissertations

Ethical decision-making is a crucial part of the daily practice of psychologists. Psychologists are faced with the challenge of developing ethical decision-making strategies that effectively address the dilemmas associated with dual relationships. Nonsexual dual relationship is defined in this research as a clinical professional relationship that occurs simultaneously with a nonsexual professional and/or personal relationship. Psychologists, regardless of the environment in which they work or the client population with whom they work, can experience a nonsexual dual relationship.

The current study investigated whether ethnographic therapist characteristics influence the interpretation and application of the APA Ethical Guidelines and thus psychologists’ decision-making …

Beneath The Black And Blue: The Child Abuse-Delinquency Connection, Heather M. Baltodano Apr 2001

Beneath The Black And Blue: The Child Abuse-Delinquency Connection, Heather M. Baltodano

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to examine the child abuse-delinquency relationship, as well as mediating variables that may influence that relationship, such as parental attachment, witnessing family violence, and negative life events. Much of the research on this topic utilizes official government statistics and substantiated child abuse cases, which research has shown to be an undercount of the actual incidents of child abuse. This analysis utilizes the data resulting from the 1992 National Youth Victimization Prevention Survey (NYVPS) in which 2000 children between the ages of 10 and 16 were interviewed by telephone. This research examines the impact of …

Investigations Into The Innate Resistance Of The Tick, Dermacentor Variabilis, When Challenged With The Bacterium, Escherichia Coli, Shane Michael Ceraul

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

In addition to the soluble response, many invertebrates control bacterial infections by means of phagocytosis or melanotic encapsulation. In some insects, Escherichia coli growth is reported to be inhibited by aggregation/encapsulation. Soluble and phagocytic responses to bacterial challenge have been reported in ticks, but evidence of an aggregation/encapsulation response was reported only for inanimate (araldite) implants. This study was done to determine how ticks control infection by E. coli. Ticks were challenged by direct inoculation of bacteria into the hemocoel cavity. Using plate counts, no viable E. coli were detected I hour post-inoculation. A direct fluorescence assay (DF A) …

Effect Of Magnesium On The Production Of Scna And Scnr By Streptococcus Pyogenes, Strain Ff22, Laura E. Quinn Apr 2001

Effect Of Magnesium On The Production Of Scna And Scnr By Streptococcus Pyogenes, Strain Ff22, Laura E. Quinn

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The lantibiotic SA-FF22, produced by Streptococcus pyogenes strain FF22, was the first described antimicrobial peptide produced by a Streptococcus species. S. pyogenes is a group A Streptococcus responsible for such human illness as strep-throat, rheumatic fever, necrotizing fasciitis, endocarditis, and meningitis. Previous studies of SA-FF22 have shown that antimicrobial activity is lost in the presence of lmM magnesium. We hypothesize that the lack of SA-FF22 activity in the presence of magnesium is due to an absence of transcription of scnA, the gene encoding SA-FF22. The lack of transcriptional activation of scnA may be due to an absence of ScnR, a …
