A Guide To Utah Native Plants And Their Use In The Landscape, Jared F. Barnes May 2001

A Guide To Utah Native Plants And Their Use In The Landscape, Jared F. Barnes

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As a landscape architecture student, I am interested in the use of plant materials; they are a fundamental part of my design palette. However, I am concerned with the quantity of water used for irrigation of mostly non-native plant materials in built landscapes of the arid west. An estimated 60-65% of water consumed in Utah from May September is used to irrigate landscapes. Landscape architects must do their part in dealing with the impending water crisis by modifying current practices. An important first step is to use and encourage others to use more drought tolerant native plants. The purpose of …

A Natural Channel Design To Restore The Greenwater River, Washington, Gregory J. Laurie May 2001

A Natural Channel Design To Restore The Greenwater River, Washington, Gregory J. Laurie

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Channelization of the Greenwater River has resulted in a loss of habitat for Chinook salmon, a species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. In order to restore habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms, a design was developed to restore meanders to the original floodplain. The channel design process began at the watershed scale, and progressed down to the scale of the stream channel. A twelve-step design process was followed that considered the influence of watershed disturbances on channel forming processes. Trends in sediment yield were assessed using an existing landslide inventory, and changes in channel pattern were …

Characterization Of A Non-Ribosomal Peptide From Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Graham Strub May 2001

Characterization Of A Non-Ribosomal Peptide From Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Graham Strub

Honors Theses

The current efforts underway to sequence the genome of Agrobacterium tumefaciens have led to the discovery of a large region of DNA (52kb) with a strong homology to several polyketide synthetase genes. This was a matter of great interest to the Agrobacterium project; no current literature documents the production of a polyketide or non:iibosomal peptide from Agrobacterium. Furthermore, the multi-domain enzymes coded by these polyketide synthetase genes in other bacterial species are responsible for synthesizing several toxins, many which act as antibiotic agents {8, 9, 12, 16). This was also of great interest, since Agrobacterium is not known to produce …

The Effects Of Parental Age And Housing Type On The Reproductive Success Of The Purple Martin (Progne Subis Subis), Jessica A. Eads

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The reproductive success of the Purple Martin is dependent upon many factors. This study measured reproductive success of the Purple Martin (Progne subis subis) based on parental age and type of housing used. Reproductive parental ages consist of adults (experienced breeders) and subadults (first time breeders). Housing types included in this study were aluminum housing, wooden housing, plastic gourds, natural gourds, SuperGourds, and mailbox housing. The reproductive success was defined as the percentage of the original clutch that fledged. Study sites were located in Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Virginia. Pairs mating nonassortatively by age group …

"'Tis Hard To Dance With One Shoe": The Failure Of The Fathers In Walker's The Color Purple And Mccourt's Angela's Ashes., Gwendolyn Nicole Hale

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In his story, “The Commitments,” Roddy Doyle identifies the Irish as "the blacks of Europe" (148). This sentiment typifies the oppression of the two cultures. The overwhelmingly oppressive society of the two aforementioned groups creates an atmosphere of failure, particularly for the fathers, who, for the most part, are supposed to be the heads of their families. Through Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes, the reader discovers the effects of these failures of the fathers due to tyrannical societies that impose dominance over such groups as the African-Americans and the Irish. The main characters, Celie and …

Genetic Evaluation Of Cytochrome P450 Expression In Smoking And Nonsmoking Women, Satya Vijayanand Vadlamuri May 2001

Genetic Evaluation Of Cytochrome P450 Expression In Smoking And Nonsmoking Women, Satya Vijayanand Vadlamuri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

1. Regiospecific expression of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in human uterus of nonsmokers. The goal of this study was to investigate the expression of these isoforms in different regions of the human uterus. Expression was determined in the endometrium, endocervix and squamous (exocervix) regions from six nonsmoking women by using RT-PCR. The transcripts encoding for CYP1A1 were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the squamous (exocervix) region compared to other areas. However the expression of CYP1B1 was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the endometrium. CYP1B1 expression appeared to be extremely low in a woman in the secretory stage of the menstrual phase, relative to the endometrium of the other patients who were all in the proliferative stage at hysterectomy. It appears that variability in the expression of these isoforms may be responsible for the differential susceptibility to cancer in women.;2. Influence of menstrual phase and smoking status on expression of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in different regions of the uterus. The goal of this study was to investigate the expression of these isoforms in different regions of the uterus from smokers and nonsmokers. These results indicate that CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 are expressed variably in different regions of the human uterus. The expression of CYP1B1 may be susceptible both to hormonal control and cigarette smoking. The variability in the expression of these isoforms may be responsible for the differential susceptibility to cancer in some women.;3. The effect of menstrual phase on CYP3A expression in human endometrium. The CYP3A family consists of four closely related proteins. Of these, CYP3A3/4 is the most abundant P450 isoform and is responsible for metabolizing estrogen as well as a variety of therapeutic agents, whereas CYP3A7, the fetal liver form, is involved in the biosynthesis of estriol. The goal of this study was to evaluate the expression of these two major CYP3A isoforms in human uterine tissue during the proliferative (PROL) and secretory (SEC) phases of the menstrual cycle. Expression of CYP3A7 in endometrium appeared to be several fold higher (∼10-fold) in the proliferative phase compared to the secretory phase. CYP3A4 expression was comparable between the two phases of the menstrual cycle. The RTPCR results indicated differential expression of CYP3A7 in various phases of the menstrual cycle. These results indicate that CYP3A isoforms may be subject to hormonal regulation during the menstrual cycle in endometrium of premenopausal women. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Potential Residential Development In The City Of Pacifica, Michael Keaney

Master's Projects

Pacifica is located three miles south of San Francisco, in San Mateo County. It is on the coastal side of the San Francisco Peninsula and is separated from the rest of the peninsula by the Coast Range (A map of the area is shown in Figure 3). The area was first settled area after the discovery of the San Francisco Bay, by the Portola Expedition in 1769. The Portola Expedition began on the northern tip of Baja California and planned to explore north to Monterey Bay. They passed through the Salinas area and missed the bay as they continued north. …

Cohousing: Beneficial For People, Communities, And The Environment, Claire E. Butler May 2001

Cohousing: Beneficial For People, Communities, And The Environment, Claire E. Butler

Master's Projects

Cohousing is the name of a type of collaborative housing that has been developed in the past thirty years. It attempts to overcome the alienation of modern subdivisions in which few people know their neighbors and tries to increase the sense of community. This type of housing development is similar to a traditional village or a close-knit neighborhood and some liken it to the best of small-town America where many of us grew up.

Cohousing is characterized by private, self-sufficient dwelling units; each having their own kitchen, living room, dining room, and bedrooms. Each cohousing development also has a common …

Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding May 2001

Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding

Theses

This thesis project is concerned with the role that graphic designers have in making learning materials more effective. It is focused on the need for instructional materials to reflect current advances in cognitive psychology and our society's definition of intelligence. Most instructional materials today are outdated and ineffective. Some reasons are political, others are socio-economic, and some fall within the scope of the designed environment. Learning materials, especially textbooks, designed before the 1980's have been designed without standards, and at a time when intelligence was seen as a narrow list of abilities.

Community Structure Of Vascular Epiphytes In A Costa Rican Elfin Forest, May 2001, Duryea Delacroix

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Neotropical montane forests are characterized by their great abundance and high diversity of epiphytes. This study examines the distribution of epiphytic families in three zones of sixMeliosma vemicosa trees using single-rope climbing techniques to access the forest canopy. Nine-hundred ninety-seven vascular epiphytes from eight angiosperm families and division Pteridophyta occurred at the study site. Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Araceae, Ericaceae, Piperaceae, and Gesneraceae were the most common angiosperm families. Pteridophytes accounted for 40% of the individuals present. Friedman's test for Shannon -Weiner index and Orchidaceae showed a significant Chi-squared value (X2 =8.4, and X2 =7.4) and tied p-value (p = 0.02, and …

Nesting Behavior Of The Female And Male Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno), May 2001, Jennifer Heller

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Knowledge of nesting behaviors of tropical birds, even for the magnificent Resplendent Quetzal, comes from few records of observations outside the nest. However, the popularity of the bird in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve inspired the Tropical Science Center to place a camera inside one of the box nests just before the 2000 nesting season. I studied the images taken during the entire nesting period. Upon analysis of the data, I found that parental care and behavior changed significantly as the chick aged. Additionally, only females slept in the nest, and although both the male and female brooded and attended …

Determinants Of Morphological Characteristics, Thermogenetic Heating And Scarabaeidae Pollination In Xanthosoma Robustum (Araceae), May 2001, Joshua A. Craig May 2001

Determinants Of Morphological Characteristics, Thermogenetic Heating And Scarabaeidae Pollination In Xanthosoma Robustum (Araceae), May 2001, Joshua A. Craig

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Xanthosoma robustum (Araceae) relies upon thermogenic heating just after sunset to attract its mutualist Scarabidae pollinator. All morphological characteristics measured (number of leaves, leaf size, stalk height, spathe length, spadix length, and kettle diameter) were correlated; demonstrating larger plants have more leaves, larger leaves, taller stalk heights, taller spathes, taller spadices and wider kettles. However, no measured characteristic was found to influence Scarabaeidae visitation. Maximum temperature of an inflorescence was found to be positively correlated with leaf size and negatively correlated with spadex height (t-test p-values 0.0007 and 0.0150, respectively). However, no recorded temperature measurements were found to influence Scarabidae …

Patterns Of Avian Productivity Indices At Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge (1995–1999), Tina Louise Gallegos

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

I examined demographic parameters at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, 1995–1999 utilizing Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship protocol. The Olive Sparrow was the species most frequently captured. The capture rate of adult and young birds remained fairly steady over the years and no significant linear trends were observed. Productivity was highest in 1997, which influenced the number of adults captured in 1998, and was significantly related to annual rainfall. Mean total capture rates were higher at the Highland station than the Resaca station. Demographic comparisons between mist nets and point counts were variable, suggesting that both sampling techniques have their …

Chthonic Power Versus Synthetic Power: Iconography And Color Symbolizing The Female Principle Relative To The Male Principle, Kathryn M. Thorn-Simpson

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The images depict an exploration of an expressive, abstract aesthetic that delineates visual content with symbolism: depicted by color, iconography, and form. The artistic intention underlying the imagery is to evoke emotional awareness of the possibility that chthonic forces of nature—the mysterious life force generated by earth and the universe—in contrast to man-made synthetic powers—technology, science, machines, war, and ideas related to control over nature—are manifested as a dichotomy of experience between female and male; the forces of nature as the female principle and synthetic powers as the male principle. The imaginative elements in the imagery use colors and forms …

The Links Between Functionally Distinct Adult Assemblages Of Sardinops Sagax : Larval Advection Across Management Boundaries, Daniel J. Gaughan, K V. White, Warrick (Rick) J. Fletcher

Fisheries Research Articles

Otolith increment data were used to age larval Sardinops sagax collected from shelf waters between Kangaroo Island in South Australia (SA) and Albany in Western Australia (WA). Distributions of both ages and hatch-dates were compared between six regions across this broad area to examine the hypothesis that larvae arising from spawning sardines in WA may be advected by the Leeuwin Current to the central coast of SA prior to metamorphosis. Current and wind data were analysed to estimate potential rates of passive transport. It appears likely that larvae arising from commercially exploited S. sagax populations in WA can be passively …

Effect Of Music By Mozart And Sounds Claiming To Contain Beta-Frequency Enhancing Audio Signals On Backward Digit Span Recall, Bryan Pickett May 2001

Effect Of Music By Mozart And Sounds Claiming To Contain Beta-Frequency Enhancing Audio Signals On Backward Digit Span Recall, Bryan Pickett

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Neurofeedback is the process of monitoring and manipulating brainwaves. In 1976, Lubar and Shouse used neurofeedback to treat a child with Attention Deficit\ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The most typical method for treating ADHD is to increase beta waves (14+ Hz), which are linked with increased focus and attention and to decrease theta waves ( 4-8 Hz), which are linked to daydreaming states. Recently this principle of increasing focus and attention through increasing beta waves has been used in audio technology that claims to increase beta waves through sound. The idea that sound or music can increase a person's attention, and …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Certain human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause most cervical cancer, which remains a significant source of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide. HPV recombinant virus-like particles (VLPs) are promising vaccine candidates for controlling anogenital HPV disease and are now being evaluated as a parenteral vaccine modality in human subjects. Vaccines formulated for injection generally are more costly, more difficult to administer, and less acceptable to recipients than are mucosally administered vaccines. Since oral delivery represents an attractive alternative to parenteral injection for large-scale human vaccination, the oral immunogenicity of HPV type 11 (HPV-11) VLPs in mice was previously investigated; it was found …

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Alterations in the expression of integrin receptors for extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins are strongly associated with the acquisition of invasive and/or metastatic properties by human cancer cells. Despite this, comparatively little is known of the biochemical mechanisms that regulate the expression of integrin genes in cells. Here we demonstrate that the Ras-activated Raf-MEK-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway can specifically control the expression of individual integrin subunits in a variety of human and mouse cell lines. Pharmacological inhibition of MEK1 in a number of human melanoma and pancreatic carcinoma cell lines led to reduced cell surface expression of alpha6- and …

Characteristics Of Nest Sites Of Northern Bobwhites In Western Oklahoma, Darrell E. Townsend Ii, Ronald E. Masters, Robert L. Lochmiller, David M. Leslie Jr., Stephen J. Demaso, Alan D. Peoples

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Previous authors have described nesting habitat of the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) throughout its range, but few have compared structural or compositional differences of vegetation between nest sites and random non-use sites, and successful and non-successful nests. From 1996-1998, we compared cover and structure of 85 plant species from 80 nest sites of northern bobwhite in western Oklahoma. Nest sites were consistently associated with greater structural complexity than what was available at random. Bobwhites selected nest sites with a greater coverage of grass (ca. 50%) and woody (ca. 20-30%) vegetation with a relatively low percentage of bare ground, …
