Bear-Viewing Ecotourism In British Columbia: Ecological, Economic, And Social Perspectives Using A Case-Study Analysis Of Knight Inlet Lodge, Bc, Julian S. Smith May 2001

Bear-Viewing Ecotourism In British Columbia: Ecological, Economic, And Social Perspectives Using A Case-Study Analysis Of Knight Inlet Lodge, Bc, Julian S. Smith

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Following a worldwide pattern of rapid ecotourism growth, British Columbia's wildlife-viewing industry is poised to expand in the near future. Using a case study example of Knight Inlet Lodge, the province's first and to date only destination for viewing grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in the wild, I examine three criteria for sustainability that may help determine the short- and long-term direction and success of this industry: economic viability, ecological sensitivity, and cultural appropriateness.

A high demand for ecotourism and wildlife viewing, both worldwide and in British Columbia in particular, is tempered by the potential economic pitfalls of ecotourism …

The Effect Of Parental Divorce On Young Adult Women's Marital Attitudes, Anne Catherine Schmidt May 2001

The Effect Of Parental Divorce On Young Adult Women's Marital Attitudes, Anne Catherine Schmidt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examines how the experience of a parent's divorce during adolescence affects young adult women's attitudes about relationships, marriage and divorce.
Research questions looked at how participants felt about marriage, their relationship with their parents following the divorce, and how the experience of parental remarriage shapes attitudes about marriage. Fifteen young adult women were interviewed.

The most significant findings were that experiencing a parental divorce leads to
fee lings of ambivalence about marriage. Religious beliefs and positive role models can alleviate some of the negative feelings about marriage that may be present following a parental divorce. Experiencing parental conflict …

Perceived Family Relationships Associated With Coming Out Of Mormon Male Homosexuals, Brad Benson May 2001

Perceived Family Relationships Associated With Coming Out Of Mormon Male Homosexuals, Brad Benson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is one of the first to include data from both male homosexuals and their family members to investigate disclosure of sexual orientation. Being homosexual in U.S. society can be particularly traumatic for males because strong pressures oppose the violation of masculine gender norms. Being homosexual and Mormon has unique complications. Reactions from the Mormon community toward individuals of homosexual orientation is defined by prevailing attitudes toward homosexuality, which are largely based on existing theories of etiology, attribution of etiology, and the religious and cultural beliefs extant in the community. The role of family relationships in the coming out …

The Effect Role Modeling And The Apparent Fatness Of A Physical Educator Has On Student Learning And Attitudes, Kurt K. Weaver May 2001

The Effect Role Modeling And The Apparent Fatness Of A Physical Educator Has On Student Learning And Attitudes, Kurt K. Weaver

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a physical education instructor appearing overweight versus lean, and role modeling exercise behavior versus “do as I say” on student learning and attitudes.

The results indicated that role modeling desired behavior had a significant and positive effect on the test scores and attitudes of participants. Specifically students who viewed the role modeling tapes scored significantly higher on the knowledge test (ES = 62 SD). The students also showed a significant effect for attitude (F[3,100] = 2.10, p < .05) from the role modeling tapes vs. the “do as I say” tapes.

Further analysis revealed students liked the role modeling instructor better than the …

The Taxonomic Rank Of Spizella Taverneri: A Response To Mayr And Johnson, John Klicka, Robert M. Zink, Jon C. Barlow, W. Bruce Mcgillivray, Terry J. Doyle May 2001

The Taxonomic Rank Of Spizella Taverneri: A Response To Mayr And Johnson, John Klicka, Robert M. Zink, Jon C. Barlow, W. Bruce Mcgillivray, Terry J. Doyle

Ornithology Program (HRC)

Mayr and Johnson suggest that Spizella taverneri should be a subspecies of the biological species S. breweri, because it is possibly not reproductively isolated. We originally concluded that evidence from mitochondrial DNA sequences, habitat preferences, timing of breeding, vocalizations, and morphology supported the recognition of S. taverneri as a phylogenetic and biological species. Nothing in the commentary by Mayr and Johnson causes us to change that conclusion. We believe that it is probable that these two allopatric taxa are isolated. Contrary to Mayr and Johnson, we believe that more information is given by ranking S. taverneri as a species, because …

Intralimb Coordination Following Obstacle Clearance During Running: The Effect Of Obstacle Height, Nikolaos Stergiou, Shane D. Scholten, Jody L. Jensen, Daniel Blanke

Journal Articles

The purpose of this study was to investigate the different coordination strategies used following obstacle clearance during running. Ten subjects ran over a level surface and over obstacles of six different heights (10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20 and 22.5% of their standing height). Analysis based upon the dynamical systems theory (DST) was used and the phasing relationships between lower extremity segments were examined. The results demonstrated that the increasing obstacle height elicited behavioral changes. The foot and the leg became more independent in their actions, while the leg and the thigh strengthened their already stable relationship. The 15% obstacle height …

Trophic Cascades, Nutrients, And Lake Productivity: Whole-Lake Experiments, Stephen R. Carpenter, Jonathan J. Cole, James R. Hodgson, James F. Kitchell, Michael L. Pace, Darren Bade, Kathryn L. Cottingham

Dartmouth Scholarship

Responses of zooplankton, pelagic primary producers, planktonic bacteria, and CO2 exchange with the atmosphere were measured in four lakes with contrasting food webs under a range of nutrient enrichments during a seven-year period. Prior to enrichment, food webs were manipulated to create contrasts between piscivore dominance and planktivore dominance. Nutrient enrichments of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus exhibited ratios of N:P > 17:1, by atoms, to maintain P limitation. An unmanipulated reference lake, Paul Lake, revealed baseline variability but showed no trends that could confound the interpretation of changes in the nearby manipulated lakes. Herbivorous zooplankton of West Long Lake (piscivorous fishes) …

PkA Determination Of Enzyme Bound Coenzyme M With Epoxyalkane: Com Transferase, Matthew Stephen Mciff May 2001

PkA Determination Of Enzyme Bound Coenzyme M With Epoxyalkane: Com Transferase, Matthew Stephen Mciff

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Epoxide metabolism in the aerobic bacterium Xanthobacter strain Py2 proceeds by a coenzyme M (2-mercaptoethanesulfonic acid), NADPH, and NAD+ dependent carboxylation reaction that form beta keto acids as products. Epoxide carboxylase, the enzyme catalyzing this reaction, was resolved into four protein components that are required for functional reconstitiution of epoxide carboxylase activity. Component I, the first step in epoxide carboxylation, catalyzes the conversion of R and S-epoxypropane into Rand S-hydroxypropyl-coenzyme M respectively. This reaction consists of an epoxide ring opening, nucleophilic addition of coenzyme M, and oxygen reduction. Coenzyme M, a compound previously found only in the methanogenic Archaea, …

New Approaches To Processing Nanoparticles And Nanostructures, Mathew M. Maye May 2001

New Approaches To Processing Nanoparticles And Nanostructures, Mathew M. Maye

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The study of nanoparticles is an emerging field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. A challenging issue is how deliberate tailoring and processing of the nanoscale materials can lead to well defined and functional nanostructures. In this thesis, we explore new strategies of nanoscale design and processing to address the challenge.

A core-shell chemical processing route towards fabrication of functional composite nanomaterials with defined sizes, shapes, compositions and surface properties is demonstrated. New findings of an investigation of thermally-activated core-shell reactivities of nanoparticles in solutions are described. Gold nanoparticles of ~2-nm core size with thiolate monolayer encapsulation were chosen as a model …

Science Gone Astray: Evolution And Rape, Elisabeth A. Lloyd May 2001

Science Gone Astray: Evolution And Rape, Elisabeth A. Lloyd

Michigan Law Review

Throughout A Natural History of Rape, coauthors Randy Thomhill and Craig Palmer resort to what is known among philosophers of science as "The Galileo Defense," which amounts to the following claim: I am telling the Truth and doing excellent science, but because of ideology and ignorance, I am being persecuted. The authors have repeated and elaborated upon this defense during the si:lable media flurry accompanying the book's publication in February 2000. Now, history has accepted this defense from Galileo. But in order for it to work for Thornhill and Palmer, of course, they must be telling the Truth and doing …

Foreword: On Academic Fads And Fashions, Cass R. Sunstein May 2001

Foreword: On Academic Fads And Fashions, Cass R. Sunstein

Michigan Law Review

Why did critical legal studies disappear? Will it reappear? Why does the Federalist Society prosper? Why, and when, do people write books on constitutional law, rather than tort law or antitrust? Why did people laugh at the notion of "animal rights," and why do they now laugh less? Why do law professors seem increasingly respectful of "textualism" and "originalism," ideas that produced ridicule and contempt just two decades ago? How do book reviewers choose what books to review? Why has law and economics had such staying power? Academics are generally committed to truth, and they are drawn to ideas that …

Are We Protecting The Wrong Rights?, Jennifer L. Saulino May 2001

Are We Protecting The Wrong Rights?, Jennifer L. Saulino

Michigan Law Review

Elizabeth Bartholet, in her book Nobody's Children, takes a strong step toward beginning a new kind of dialogue about abused and neglected children. She positions herself as a liberal who has come to terms with the fact that traditional liberal ideals are in conflict with the needs of abused and neglected children (p. 5). In doing so, she tries to convince her readers that, regardless of ideology, we all should have a different focus in the area of child abuse and neglect law. She uses Sabrina as one of several examples of how programs for abused and neglected children that …

An Examination Of Juvenile Delinquency And Victimization Using An Integrated Model Approach., Kimberly Dawn Dodson May 2001

An Examination Of Juvenile Delinquency And Victimization Using An Integrated Model Approach., Kimberly Dawn Dodson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The theories of social bond, differential association and routine activities were synthesized into one theoretical model to determine its predictive utility in the explanation of juvenile delinquency and victimization. Using cross-sectional data obtained from the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) survey, a sample of 1,555 middle school students was examined. The results of the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions indicate that the integrated model explains between 33% and 37% of the variation in delinquent behavior (i.e., property crime, violent crime and alcohol and illegal drug use). The analysis also indicates that the integrated model explains between 15% and 27% …

Isaac Bashevis Singer: Speak English, Think Yiddish-- Adaptation Versus Assimilation., Susan L. Gardberg May 2001

Isaac Bashevis Singer: Speak English, Think Yiddish-- Adaptation Versus Assimilation., Susan L. Gardberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Critics use the words "vanished culture" to describe Isaac Bashevis Singer's work for Polish Jewry had been destroyed. However, Singer's characters survive the travails of anti-Semitism and resettle in America. This study explores Singer's Polish Jews to determine whether they assimilate into their new culture; or maintain their strong Jewish traditions and adapt to the freedoms of America.

Singer's life is analyzed, including the people and places that have influenced his work. Two of Singer's works are examined in this thesis. Chapters Three and Four explicate an allegorical short story, "The Little Shoemakers." Singer writes a fairytale view of a …

A Correlational Study Of Firefighter Personality Traits And Emotional Exhaustion, Jeffrey P. Mccall May 2001

A Correlational Study Of Firefighter Personality Traits And Emotional Exhaustion, Jeffrey P. Mccall

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The occupational stress of the firefighter has received much attention over the last two decades in a variety of professional articles and studies. Elevated levels of stress may facilitate the onset of occupational burnout within this public service. The emotional exhaustion component of Maslach's burnout theory, which can be conceptualized as the first stage of burnout, will be specifically addressed in this study. The subjects were 81 firefighters from a large urban fire department, with a range in age, years of service, marital status, and ethnicity. A Pearson product-moment correlation was conducted to ascertain correlations between personality traits as noted …

Development Of A Bird-Avoidance Model For Naval Air Facility El Centro, California, Edward J. Zakrajsek May 2001

Development Of A Bird-Avoidance Model For Naval Air Facility El Centro, California, Edward J. Zakrajsek

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bird strikes (collisions between birds and aircraft) pose a significant threat to aviation safety. For example, Naval Air Facility El Centro, California, lost an F-18 jet to a bird strike in October 1995. To help combat the bird-strike threat at Naval Air Facility El Centro, I developed a bird-avoidance model as a risk-management tool for the installation. It can be used to schedule flights at NAF El Centro and its two associated practice-bombing ranges during times of low-bird activity. I calculated bird-strike risks and published them in web-page format on both the installation's server and the USGS/Utah State University, College …
