What's On Page One? How Minorities Are Depicted In The National Print Press, Susan Guthrie Chang Saridakis May 2001

What's On Page One? How Minorities Are Depicted In The National Print Press, Susan Guthrie Chang Saridakis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose was to identify how positively minority groups and non minority groups are depicted in the American print media. Fifty-two editions each of USA Today and The Wall Street Journal published during 2000 were rated for how positively and negatively minority and non-minority groups were portrayed. Two raters completed a questionnaire, identifying 1,144 newspaper stories and providing 1,626 ratings of minority and/or non-minority groups. Descriptive data and correlational results were calculated. No relationship between socioeconomic status of readership and positive presentation of group or minority/non-minority group membership and positive presentation of group were found. However, it was found that …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Thank you for inviting me to be here with you today. I've now completed four months as University of Nebraska Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources and Harlan Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and I welcome every opportunity that comes my way to meet and talk with Nebraska's residents. I'm particularly happy to be here with you; I appreciate your interest in agriculture, and Ed Woeppel tells me that many members of this group are very supportive of the Institute, and worked hard to create IANR in the '70s.

Alu Insertion Polymorphisms And The Genetic Structure Of Human Populations From The Caucasus, Ivane Nasidze, Gregory M. Risch, Myles Robichaux, Stephen T. Sherry, Mark A. Batzer, Mark Stoneking May 2001

Alu Insertion Polymorphisms And The Genetic Structure Of Human Populations From The Caucasus, Ivane Nasidze, Gregory M. Risch, Myles Robichaux, Stephen T. Sherry, Mark A. Batzer, Mark Stoneking

Faculty Publications

An analysis of 8 Alu insertion loci (ACE, TPA25, PV92, APO, FXIIIB, D1, A25, B65) has been carried out in six populations from the Caucasus, including Indo-European-speaking Armenians; Altaic-speaking Azerbaijanians; North Caucasian-speaking Cherkessians, Darginians, and Ingushians; and South Caucasian (Kartvelian)-speaking Georgians. The Caucasus populations exhibit low levels of within-population variation and high levels of between-population differentiation, with the average Fst value for the Caucasus of 0.113, which is almost as large as the Fst value of 0.157 for worldwide populations. Maximum likelihood tree and principal coordinate analyses both group the Caucasus populations with European populations. Neither geographic nor linguistic relationships …

Metal Ion Stabilization Of G-Tetrads Containing 6-Thioguanosine, Julia Drees May 2001

Metal Ion Stabilization Of G-Tetrads Containing 6-Thioguanosine, Julia Drees

Honors Theses

As alternative structures to the double helix, G-tetrads are thought to occur in DNA with many repeating deoxyguanosines (dG). These tetrads have one dG on each corner of a plane and can stack into tetraplexes that can be aptamers and may be found in telomeres. G-tetrads are destabilized by incorporation of 6-thiodeoxyguanosine (?sdG). Addition of metal ions that bind sulfur may stabilize these ?sdG-tetrads. We have carried out a survey of metal ion titrations into ?sG. Stable ?sG:MD? complexes were found for Hg2? (2:1), Cd2? (4:1), Ag2? (0.7:1) and Pt2? (thought to be 2:1). UV/Visible spectrophotometry indicates that G-tetrads containing …

Effects Of Smooth Brome (Bromus Inermis) Invasion On Tallgrass Prairie., Sarah Jo Mann May 2001

Effects Of Smooth Brome (Bromus Inermis) Invasion On Tallgrass Prairie., Sarah Jo Mann

Student Work

Data collected in 1984 and 2000 along a 65-m-long roadside-to-prairie gradient were compared to quantify brome (Bromus inermis) invasion into a native, tallgrass prairie in eastern Nebraska and to assess the effect of this expansion on prairie composition and diversity: Smooth brome expanded 15 meters further into tallgrass prairie during the 16 years of the study while also increasing cover an average of 8%. Overall, species diversity (H’) decreased from 1.04 to 0.95 along the entire toad-prairie gradient during this time although the decrease was significant (P ≤ 0.10) at only three of the five distances from the road that …
