Quantification Of Nanomolar Superoxide In Aqueous Solution : Flow Injection Analysis Using The Chemiluminescent Reagent Mcla., Nathan Boland May 2001

Quantification Of Nanomolar Superoxide In Aqueous Solution : Flow Injection Analysis Using The Chemiluminescent Reagent Mcla., Nathan Boland

Honors Theses

A flow injection system using the chemiluminescent reagent 2-methyl-6-(4methoxyphenyl)- 3,7-dihydroimidazo[1,2-a]pyrazin-3-one (MCLA) was used to quantify aqueous concentrations of superoxide. Stock solutions of superoxide were produced by photolysis of a solution of 2-propanol and benzophenone. The concentration of superoxide was quantified in the stock solutions by direct measurement of the absorbance at 240 nm. Quantified additions of superoxide to the flow injection analysis system reacted with MCLA at pH 5.1 demonstrated a detection limit of 0.074 nM superoxide. Selective superoxide detection was confirmed by pH-dependent decay of superoxide, which was in excellent agreement with published rates.

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt May 2001

Multidisciplinarity And Cognitive Science, Barbara Von Eckardt

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The aim of Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s (1998) study is to address the question of whether the current state of cognitive science, as represented by Cognitive Science and the Cognitive Science Society, “reflects the multidisciplinary ideals of its foundation.” To properly interpret and respond to their results, we need to ask a prior question: What is cognitive science’s multidisciplinary ideal? There are at least two conceptions—a “localist” conception, which seems to be implicit in Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s discussion, and a “holist” conception. I argue that while both have been endorsed by some cognitive scientists, there are reasons for preferring …

Mirror Self-Recognition In The Bottlenose Dolphin: A Case Of Cognitive Convergence, Diana Reiss, Lori Marino May 2001

Mirror Self-Recognition In The Bottlenose Dolphin: A Case Of Cognitive Convergence, Diana Reiss, Lori Marino

Sentience Collection

The ability to recognize oneself in a mirror is an exceedingly rare capacity in the animal kingdom. To date, only humans and great apes have shown convincing evidence of mirror self-recognition. Two dolphins were exposed to reflective surfaces, and both demonstrated responses consistent with the use of the mirror to investigate marked parts of the body. This ability to use a mirror to inspect parts of the body is a striking example of evolutionary convergence with great apes and humans.

The Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Food Production (Focusing Mainly On Rural Farms In Sub-Saharan Africa) And The Effects On The Supply, Demand, And Wages Of Farm Labor, Muhammad Zubair Qamar May 2001

The Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Food Production (Focusing Mainly On Rural Farms In Sub-Saharan Africa) And The Effects On The Supply, Demand, And Wages Of Farm Labor, Muhammad Zubair Qamar

Theses & Honors Papers

Utilizing empirical data from studies conducted mainly by international organizations, such as the UNAIDS and the Food and Agriculture Organization , the thesis aims to strengthen the hypothesis that the higher the frequency of HIVIAIDS, mainly in rural African farm communities, the higher the impact there is on food production. Moreover, the supply, demand, and wages of farm labor are also affected by HIV/AIDS. To give a background of the conditions of disease, the first part of the thesis gives an overview of the history of disease. The history and possible origins of HIV/AIDS are delved into, after …

Perceptions And Experiences Of Middle School General Education Social Studies And Science Teachers With Respect To The Inclusion Of Low Reading Level Students In Their Classrooms, David Walls May 2001

Perceptions And Experiences Of Middle School General Education Social Studies And Science Teachers With Respect To The Inclusion Of Low Reading Level Students In Their Classrooms, David Walls

Theses and Dissertations

P.L. 94-142, and subsequent laws, require that all students receive a free and appropriate public education provided in the least restrictive environment (LRE). When a child study team has determined that a child is eligible for special education services they decide which program will most benefit this child's academic progress. Numerous variables determine placement in the most appropriate and least restrictive environment, so that when a child is placed in the general education setting for content area classes it is in the best interest of that child.

This study provided documentation of the attitudes, perceptions, and concerns of general education …

The Effects Of Institutionalization On Romanian Children When Adopted Into Families In The United States, Dawn M. Roy May 2001

The Effects Of Institutionalization On Romanian Children When Adopted Into Families In The United States, Dawn M. Roy

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempts to research the dynamic factors involved in the assessment of children placed in adoptive homes in the United States who were taken from large institutional orphanages in Romania. This paper will discuss various aspects of problems that were encountered by children who lack the stimulation, stability and love that are crucial during the early years of development. It also endeavors to provide interventions that will enable these children to progress along more developmentally appropriate guidelines.

This project utilized a single subject design. The analysis was descriptive in nature. It measured the improvement of mean utterance length. The …
