Memory Recall Among Individuals Reporting Child Sexual Abuse: The Role Of Suggestibility, Dissociation, And Closeness With The Perpetrator, Tammy M. Schultz Jan 2001

Memory Recall Among Individuals Reporting Child Sexual Abuse: The Role Of Suggestibility, Dissociation, And Closeness With The Perpetrator, Tammy M. Schultz

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade, a contentious debate regarding delayed memories of child sexual abuse (CSA) has existed. Advocates on one side of the debate (Williams, 1994) maintain that common sequelae to traumatic events include memory disturbances. Dissociation and the dependent relationship between the victim and perpetrator are used to explain these memory disturbances. In contrast, proponents from the other end of the continuum (Loftus, 1993) argue abusive events are memorable, and suggestible clients adopt erroneous traumatic memories, as a result of leading questions used in therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiology of CSA, and address …

New Sequential And Scalable Parallel Algorithms For Incomplete Factor Preconditioning, David A. Hysom Jan 2001

New Sequential And Scalable Parallel Algorithms For Incomplete Factor Preconditioning, David A. Hysom

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The solution of large, sparse, linear systems of equations Ax = b is an important kernel, and the dominant term with regard to execution time, in many applications in scientific computing. The large size of the systems of equations being solved currently (millions of unknowns and equations) requires iterative solvers on parallel computers. Preconditioning, which is the process of translating a linear system into a related system that is easier to solve, is widely used to reduce solution time and is sometimes required to ensure convergence. Level-based preconditioning (ILU(ℓ)) has long been used in serial contexts and is widely recognized …

Globalization And Legal Education: Views From The Outside-In, W. Wesley Pue Jan 2001

Globalization And Legal Education: Views From The Outside-In, W. Wesley Pue

All Faculty Publications

During the past two decades a new, global, legal professionalism has manifested itself in the field of legal education through a variety of programmes seeking to produce globally-aware or globally-connected lawyers. This paper explores the diverse meanings of globalization and legal education with particular attention to the differential effects of globalization and the varied experiences of it in different parts of the world. Taking its starting point from a Nigerian graduate student's insight that globalization means 'The White Man is Coming again'. What does he want this time?, he explores both American and international perspectives.

Recreational Birdwatching, Empire, And Gender In Southern Ontario, 1791-1886, Kirsten Aletta Greer Jan 2001

Recreational Birdwatching, Empire, And Gender In Southern Ontario, 1791-1886, Kirsten Aletta Greer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis addresses the historical and cultural development of the recreational birdwatching in southern Ontario, 1791-1886, and the efforts of empire and gender on birdwatchers’ identities and ideas about birds. By deconstructing recreational ornithological discourse, I suggest that recreational birdwatching reproduced the imposition of British colonial rule in Canada, together with condescension towards aboriginal peoples and non-British immigrants; and the reinforcement of British, middle-class, gendered identities in southern Ontario. This research therefore shows that recreational ornithological texts provide a medium to deconstruct the impact of birdwatching on people’s lives in their gendered approach to the activity.

Gender, Income And Managerial Status Among Graduate Social Workers, Gail Louise Kenyon Jan 2001

Gender, Income And Managerial Status Among Graduate Social Workers, Gail Louise Kenyon

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Two historical changes have impacted on women's relationship with work in the last century. The influx of young single women into the paid work force and the participation of married women in the paid work force have changed the world of work for men and women. Middle and upper class women gained access into the public sphere through the caring work of teaching, nursing and social work. Although the roles of women have expanded and in many ways changed, the struggle for equity is far from over. Women still earn, on average, significantly less than males in Canada. Female Social …

The study of children's social and emotional development requires that attention be paid to such factors as dispositional/biological factors (e.g., temperament), familial interactions and relationships, social contexts (e.g., school, neighborhood), and culture. For example, Hinde (1995) has advanced the notion that development be considered from a multi-level perspective beginning with individual characteristics and progressing the interaction, relationship, and group levels of analysis and conjecture. At the level of the individual child, developmental scientists have studies such constructs as temperament that might lead to problematic social or behavioral outcomes. One such interpersonal characteristic is that of "difficult" temperament – a phenomenon …

Testing The Invariance Of The Transtheoretical Model Utilizing A Population Of Smokers, Rose Marie Ward Jan 2001

Testing The Invariance Of The Transtheoretical Model Utilizing A Population Of Smokers, Rose Marie Ward

Open Access Master's Theses

A crucial assumption in the development of a measure is that the measurement model is invariant. This means that the measurement model is the same in different populations and across different occasions. Utilizing data from a representative sample of smokers, we examined the invariance of the Decisional Balance Inventory and the Processes of Change. The sample consists of 4144 participants (44.3% male, 55.7% female, 95.7% White, mean age 40.7). After the number of factors for each scale was confirmed using Factor Analysis, the sample was partitioned into subgroups to test the invariance of the model. The scales were compared across …

Carl Peter Hoiberg, Thorvald Hansen Jan 2001

Carl Peter Hoiberg, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

Elsewhere, I have written that Carl Peter Hoiberg (Hojberg) was one of the most controversial figures in what was the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He was widely respected for his learning and his abilities. He could teach and preach and inspire as few others could. It has been said, "I doubt very much that any single person in our church has inspired so many young people as did Carl Peter Hoiberg."1 He was at once at academician and one who had devotion to and vision for the folk school. He had a lively sense of curiosity, which he …

Peder Kjolhede-Man Of Action, Thorvald Hansen Jan 2001

Peder Kjolhede-Man Of Action, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

Prior to the coming of the Protestant Reformation in 1536, the area in which Peder Kjoilhede (hereinafter Kjolhede) was born and grew up was owned by the Roman Catholic bishops. This area, south of the Limfjord and close to the west coast of Jutland, became the property of the king. It was parceled out by him to those who had rendered service to him, and much later, through division and sales, a portion of it came to be the property of Johan Kjolhede and was known as the farm of Kjolhedegird.

Jens Christian Jensen And Family: The Story Of An American Pioneer From Denmark And His Family, Lois Eagleton

The Bridge

Family stories, by their very nature, never stop being a work in progress. My mother had kept her family tree for many years, as had her mother before her. When I decided to update what they had done and bring it into the electronic age, I really had no idea what I was getting into. My mother had attempted to keep everything organized over the years. It was organized, sort of, here and there, in drawers, in boxes, on shelves, in closets, stacked on tables, you name it. She had kept everything! Thank goodness she did, for I have found …

The Education And Training For Work Of People With Mental Health Problems: Issues Arising From Recent Changes In Ireland, John Wells

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The value of vocational training and work is well established as an important contributor towards the successful rehabilitation and recovery maintenance of people who have had or have mental health problems. Recent changes to the statutory framework governing socially integrative disability policy have certain implications for the successful establishment and co-ordinated working of specialist vocational and educational schemes for people with mental health problems. This editorial article reviews the literature on employment, training and its value to mental health rehabilitation in order to examine these implications.

The Dynamics Of Cultural Production In Ireland: Economic Strategy, Digital Technology And Public Policy Making, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2001

The Dynamics Of Cultural Production In Ireland: Economic Strategy, Digital Technology And Public Policy Making, Ellen Hazelkorn

Books/Book chapters

The last ten years has seen Ireland, now dubbed the ‘Celtic tiger’ of Europe, achieve an economic about-turn. A key element of this growth has been new technology. Irish policy makers have focused increasingly on a growth strategy led by the information and communications technologies (ICTs) as a means to leapfrog historic and geographic limitations of the earlier industrial revolution and ‘jump-start’ Irish economic growth. Taking advantage of rapid social structural changes, relatively high public investment/endorsement of education and advanced skills, and a ‘natural’ reservoir of creativity, that strategy has sought to market Ireland as an ‘information gateway’, an English-speaking …

“God Told Me To Kill”: Religion Or Delusion?, Grant M. Morris, Ansar Haroun Jan 2001

“God Told Me To Kill”: Religion Or Delusion?, Grant M. Morris, Ansar Haroun

San Diego Law Review

This Article explores how, in assessing the motivation of those who kill because they believe they were directed by God to do so, society distinguishes religious-based decisions from delusional decisions that result from mental disorder. Part II discusses how religion is defined in our society, and Part III considers the extent to which religious conduct, as opposed to religious belief, is protected from governmental intrusion.

A Model For Managing Information Flow On The World Wide Web, Michael Paul Evans Jan 2001

A Model For Managing Information Flow On The World Wide Web, Michael Paul Evans

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis considers the nature of information management on the World Wide Web. The web has evolved into a global information system that is completely unregulated, permitting anyone to publish whatever information they wish. However, this information is almost entirely unmanaged, which, together with the enormous number of users who access it, places enormous strain on the web's architecture. This has led to the exposure of inherent flaws, which reduce its effectiveness as an information system. The thesis presents a thorough analysis of the state of this architecture, and identifies three flaws that could render the web unusable: link rot; …

Coping Responses Among Aged Home Health Care Clients : A Qualitative Study, Bobbie Kay Grother Jan 2001

Coping Responses Among Aged Home Health Care Clients : A Qualitative Study, Bobbie Kay Grother

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As people age, they are faced with roles and activities that challenge their intellectual or physical capabilities. People, however, are pragmatic by nature; they seek to use what "works" when faced with predicaments that test their mettle. The purpose of this research has been to understand how aged home health care clients try to maintain valued selves in the face of their declining functional abilities. Data were drawn from qualitative methodological techniques (e.g., participant observation, observational data, and unstructured interviews). In order to provide some structure to this data, a theoretical orientation grounded in symbolic interaction was used in lieu …

Japanese Women With A U.S. Education: Lives In Japan After A U.S. Sojourn, Yukiko Ebara

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to examine Japanese women's experiences, to interpret the data within a feminist and sociological framework, and, finally, to develop a theoretical understanding of Japanese women who have studied in the United States, and returned to Japan. Unlike groups in the majority of earlier studies, these women are neither children of Japanese corporate employees nor their wives. They came to the United States for the sole purpose of pursuing English study or higher education. The research was conducted through qualitative research methods: a survey with open-ended questions via e-mail and telephone interviews. The data were …

The Effects Of Individual Factors On Punitive Attitudes Toward Juvenile Offenders, Jennifer Keely Mac Connell Jan 2001

The Effects Of Individual Factors On Punitive Attitudes Toward Juvenile Offenders, Jennifer Keely Mac Connell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between individual factors and punitive attitudes toward juvenile offenders. The individual factors examined were attributional style, authoritarianism, anxiety, self-esteem, the Five-Factor model of personality, and gender. It was hypothesized that possessing a punitive attributional style, maintaining authoritarian beliefs, and being male would predict punitive attitudes toward adolescent offenders. I also examined the effects of age of the offender and severity of the crime on attributions and punishment decisions. College students (N = 185) at a Midwestern university completed questionnaire packets in partial fulfillment of their introductory psychology course requirements. …
