Client Weight As A Barrier To Non-Biased Clinical Judgment, Tricia Duncan Hassel, Carol J. Amici, Nancy S. Thurston, Richard L. Gorsuch
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
A sample of 95 Christian and 68 Non-Christian mental health professionals were given a picture of either an overweight or average-weight male or female client and a generic case vignette. Participants were asked to make clinical judgments of pathology and client attributions for the pictured client. Results indicated that mental health professionals ascribe more pathology and negative attributes to obese clients than to average-weight clients. In addition, Christian mental health professionals are just as likely as non-Christians to ascribe more negative attributes to obese clients. Ways to remove barriers to unbiased psychotherapy and deal with countertransference issues are discussed from …

The Impact Of The College Experience On The Lives Of Female Single-Parent Students, Elizabeth Darby Watson
The Impact Of The College Experience On The Lives Of Female Single-Parent Students, Elizabeth Darby Watson
Dissertations
Problem. Poverty affects all people groups, but women are systematically poorer than men are. The feminization of poverty aptly defines the plight and consequence of women's poverty. In the United States the current federal mandate requires all able-bodied adults to be gainfully employed. Minimum-wage jobs, for unskilled and untrained workers, do not move poor women and their families out of poverty.
Method. This study used quantitative and qualitative data to explore the impact of the college experience on 56 single parents who had attended a tuition-driven, faith-based college during the 10-year period of 1987-1997. Responses from a mailed questionnaire and …

The Idea Of Adoption: An Inquiry Into The History Of Adult Adoptee Access To Birth Records, Elizabeth Samuels
The Idea Of Adoption: An Inquiry Into The History Of Adult Adoptee Access To Birth Records, Elizabeth Samuels
All Faculty Scholarship
There has been in recent years and there continues to be intense debate around the country about whether to open original birth records to adult adoptees. Our understanding of the legal history relevant to the debate has been incomplete and inaccurate. According to this understanding, the state laws that closed court and birth records to the parties to adoptions generally closed these records for all time to all parties; the laws had a primary purpose of insuring lifelong anonymity for birth parents; and the laws became nearly universal by about the middle of the twentieth century. In fact, the history …
The Strange History Of Adult Adoptee Access To Original Birth Records, Elizabeth Samuels
The Strange History Of Adult Adoptee Access To Original Birth Records, Elizabeth Samuels
All Faculty Scholarship
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, contemporary accounts reported that most states had sealed adoption court records completely but, typically, had sealed original birth certificates from all persons except adult adoptees. Through the 1950s influential experts recommended that original birth certificates remain available to adult adoptees, while birth and court records otherwise be closed to all persons except upon court order. In 1960 the laws in some 40 percent of the states still permitted adult adoptees to inspect them, but between 1960 and 1990 all but a handful of the rest of the states closed the birth records to …
Interagency Coordination And Collaboration In The Management Of Child Sexual Abuse: In Australian And England, Anne Margaret Lawrence
Interagency Coordination And Collaboration In The Management Of Child Sexual Abuse: In Australian And England, Anne Margaret Lawrence
Other Faculty of Health Theses
This thesis focuses on interagency coordination and collaboration in the management of child sexual abuse in Australia and in England. The impetus for the research arose from the experience of the author as manager and practitioner in the area of child sexual abuse, while working in these two countries. Problems regarding the management of interagency cooperation had become apparent in child protection practice and were also recognized in the literature. Personal experience, as well as a review of the literature, revealed that there was a need for the identification and validation of the key mechanisms and processes underlying effective interagency …

Teacher Personal And School Culture Characteristics In Effective Schools: Toward A Model Of A Professional Learning Community., Dianne Fuselier Olivier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore personal and organizational factors within schools operating as professional learning communities and the relationships of these variables with intent to stay in teaching and organizational effectiveness. A conceptual framework, a Professional Learning Community Model, was developed to organize and conceptualize linkages among school culture, teacher self-efficacy, collective efficacy, human caring, intent to stay, and organizational effectiveness. Original measures were developed to assess teacher self-efficacy and collective efficacy and revisions/modifications of measures were used for school culture, human caring, and intent to stay. The study used a large sample and quantitative data analysis …

The Mental Health Provider Privilege In The Wake Of Jaffe V. Redmond, Robert H. Aronson
The Mental Health Provider Privilege In The Wake Of Jaffe V. Redmond, Robert H. Aronson
Articles
Many of the revisions to article V of the Uniform Rules of Evidence involved stylistic, nonsubstantive changes. In particular, all language was made gender neutral. The most substantial revision was to Rule 503, formerly titled "Physician and Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege." This revision broadened the scope of the privilege to include a general "mental health provider" privilege, in accord with the trend in the states and the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Jaffee v. Redmond. In Jaffee, the Court recognized for the first time a federal psychotherapist-patient privilege and extended the privilege to confidential communications with a licensed social worker in …
Quality Of Life Assessment For Young Children With Developmental Disabilities And Their Families: Development Of A Quality Of Life Questionnaire., Rachel A. Bowman
Quality Of Life Assessment For Young Children With Developmental Disabilities And Their Families: Development Of A Quality Of Life Questionnaire., Rachel A. Bowman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early intervention for the treatment of developmental delays in children birth through three years is a fairly recent programmatic development. One of the goals of early intervention services is to improve child and family quality of life. However, no reliable and valid instruments currently exist to assess child and family quality of life for this particular population. The present study describes the development of the Quality of Life Questionnaire. The first step in the development of this questionnaire consisted of a comprehensive review of the developmental disabilities and pediatric chronic illnesses literatures in order to develop an interview (Quality of …

Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson
Addressing Mormon Female Communities: Working Towards A Woman's Capacity, Alyssa Snow Larson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project explores the discourse in Mormon culture addressing Mormon female communities. The discussion is sociological rather than theological and examines the functional characteristics of discourse found in the tradition regarding women. It sets out to review a paradox in the discourse addressing Mormon women that has been documented over time. I examine how this paradox in Mormon discourse establishes and limits women's roles; to do so, I use personal examples and the experience provided by thirteen women whom I interviewed.
The thesis is divided into three main discussions: Community, Discursive Action and Cooperation. My methodology involves a theoretical …

Close examination of the Short-story reveals a fragment of life rendered through lightning impressions, which are compressions, and which exhibit a skill of omission. Particularly, in the writings of women, omissions challenge writing codes. Writing codes dictate conventional expectations of narrative, of gender, of race. Writing codes would marginalize the unconventional, and by so doing, maintain the status quo. Like penal sentences these codes impose a role-identity not only on the characters and the narrative-proper, but also on the author. Self recovery from writing codes requires a subversive escape from a location of no choice in topic. Street Theater is …
The Relationship Between Teachers' Theoretical Orientations To Reading And Their Verbal Feedback To Students During Oral Reading, Kathleen A. Swann
The Relationship Between Teachers' Theoretical Orientations To Reading And Their Verbal Feedback To Students During Oral Reading, Kathleen A. Swann
Open Access Dissertations
This study examined the link between theory and practice as evidenced in the relationship between teachers' beliefs and the decisions they make during instruction. It is embedded within research on teacher change during times of educational reform (Cuban, 1993; Darling-Hammond, 1997; Sarason, 1996) and in reading theory (Shannon, 1992). The specific role of belief in the change process is unclear (Guskey, 1986; Richardson, 1990). Beliefs were explored through the construct of theoretical orientation (blend of teachers' beliefs and knowledge) to reading. Decisions were observed through the verbal feedback teachers gave during oral reading instruction. The study was designed to triangulate …

Recommendations Of The Joint Conference
Georgia Law Review
Health-care and financial planning for the client with diminished capacity requires a holistic approach that includes consideration of the realities of dementia progression, cultural and linguistic diversity, capacity that may vary over time, issues of surrogate decision making, and recognition of the client's vulnerability to abuse, neglect, exploitation and undue influence. A goal of legal planning should be to limit the use of guardianship to the greatest extent possible.
Scholarly Teaching: Exploring How Diverse Faculty Investigate Course Changes To Improve Student Learning., Scott Allen Cottrell
Scholarly Teaching: Exploring How Diverse Faculty Investigate Course Changes To Improve Student Learning., Scott Allen Cottrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several compelling reports are calling for the improvement of undergraduate education. Their central concern is that colleges and universities are not learning communities, where both faculty and students are engaged in a powerful learning environment. The purpose of this study was to learn how faculty are addressing these concerns by approaching teaching as a scholarly activity. The case studies and qualitative analyses of the data revealed that diverse educational institutions and faculty from different disciplines are approaching teaching as an investigative process. The faculty are developing active learning approaches to help students realize the courses' learning outcomes. The faculty are …

Clinicians Share Their Experience Of Coping With The Cost Of Caring: A Good News Story, Elizabeth Susanna Schramm
Clinicians Share Their Experience Of Coping With The Cost Of Caring: A Good News Story, Elizabeth Susanna Schramm
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
There is a wealth of literature validating the notion that social workers may be vulnerable to costs associated with the performance of caring work, in other words, ‘the cost of caring’. There is also a significant amount of literature that describes the coping strategies required to manage these effects. The participants in this study illustrate that a social worker’s well being need not be sacrificed in the interest of maintaining the principle of client-centered practice. Social workers have a responsibility to care for themselves, both in the interest of offering competent services to their clients, and in order to assure …
A Journey Within A Journey: A Naturalistic Study Of The Early Relationship Development Process In Non-Directive Play Therapy, Nancy Lynne Riedel Bowers
A Journey Within A Journey: A Naturalistic Study Of The Early Relationship Development Process In Non-Directive Play Therapy, Nancy Lynne Riedel Bowers
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
An innovative qualitative methodology of "thematic analysis" was developed to describe the early relationship development process of non-directive play therapy. Through the analysis of individual and focus group meetings, six themes and hundreds of categories emerged which together describe the early process of play therapy and examine how these themes, separately and together, might facilitate the relationship development process. The themes identified are: description, qualities, goals, therapeutic support, process and indicators of growth. A new category emerged through the videotape analysis process of the research indicating that children resort to 'comfort play' when in time of distress. In addition, relationship …
Gender, Income And Managerial Status Among Graduate Social Workers, Gail Louise Kenyon
Gender, Income And Managerial Status Among Graduate Social Workers, Gail Louise Kenyon
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Two historical changes have impacted on women's relationship with work in the last century. The influx of young single women into the paid work force and the participation of married women in the paid work force have changed the world of work for men and women. Middle and upper class women gained access into the public sphere through the caring work of teaching, nursing and social work. Although the roles of women have expanded and in many ways changed, the struggle for equity is far from over. Women still earn, on average, significantly less than males in Canada. Female Social …

The Law Of White Spaces: Race, Culture, And Legal Education, Peter Goodrich, Linda G. Mills
Articles
The scene, drawn from memory, is a first-year law school classroom. It is the early 1980s and the class is on civil procedure. The teacher is a white woman. She is nervous, and the class is dominated by students who provide standard right answers to formulaic law school questions. Other points of view, particularly those of a critical or feminist nature, are either passed over quickly or ignored. Questions of color are never mentioned. More than that, the teacher never calls on any African-American students. Students of color are either ignored completely or told, when they have questions, “We are …
