Socialisation And The Security Function : Defining A Positive Role For Security In The Socialisation Of New Employees, Zack A. Gurdon
Socialisation And The Security Function : Defining A Positive Role For Security In The Socialisation Of New Employees, Zack A. Gurdon
Theses : Honours
The role of security has evolved beyond a guard standing at a post. Although such activities are still vital, more proactive measures are required to combat increasing incidents of internal theft, workplace violence and fraud. However, the development of pro-active security activities cannot occur in a vacuum, therefore the Security Function must look to other organisational activities for support Socialisation has an important role in assisting individuals to familiarise themselves with their new environment, and develop an understanding of their role within an organisation. Failing to socialise an employee effectively may negatively impact upon individual behaviour, job satisfaction and organisational …

Television As A Medium To College Students' Predispositions: Portrayals Of Professors And Their Profession, Mona Millicent Lauber
Television As A Medium To College Students' Predispositions: Portrayals Of Professors And Their Profession, Mona Millicent Lauber
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Students bring preconceived beliefs and attitudes to their initial college experience. These predispositions influence their communication and interaction with faculty and others in the higher education environment. Previous research identified family, school, and peers as sources that contribute to the formation of students' predispositions. This study was designed to explore television as a fourth medium to college students' predispositions; Drawing from the perspectives of social cognitive theory and cultivation theory, portrayals of professors were analyzed in 15 episodes across three television programs. The content analysis employed both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Personality categories for the quantitative portion were adapted from …
Peer Education And Its Effects On The Beliefs Of Rape Myths, Allison Marmer
Peer Education And Its Effects On The Beliefs Of Rape Myths, Allison Marmer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Research has found that there is a relationship between men's acceptance of rape myths and violence against women (Malamuth, 1989). These stereotypical ideas about rape, rape victims, and rapists, perpetuate rape. Peer education may play a beneficial part in teaching students about rape, and is the primary focus of this study. The hypothesis of this study was that the rape myth prevention intervention would reduce the beliefs in myths about rape. The intervention, or informative lecture that was given to the experimental group was a derivative of material geared towards high school students. In summary, this research study succeeded to …
Deterrence And Urinalysis Of Probationers, James Pierre Perdue
Deterrence And Urinalysis Of Probationers, James Pierre Perdue
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Urinalysis of offenders under community supervision has become a standard procedure for probation offices in the United States. The District of Nevada reports proportionally half the rate of positive urine tests compared to the national average. The current research utilized a survey and field study of the offenders under federal supervision in the District of Nevada who were court ordered to submit to urine testing. The research addresses questions regarding deterrence and the accuracy of the urine testing program. Results indicate that there was little difference between groups of offenders who reported using drugs while in the testing program. A …
"Holy Dwarves" And "Devil Babies": An Anthropological World-Survey Of Stigmatization Of The Disabled, Tommi Louise White
"Holy Dwarves" And "Devil Babies": An Anthropological World-Survey Of Stigmatization Of The Disabled, Tommi Louise White
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Disability exists as a human universal based upon conceptual categorizations. Positive and negative forms of stigmatization exist cross-culturally, and are examined in a world-survey format in terms of emic socio-cultural level, subsistence economy, and religion. I suggest that responses to disability are cultural specific, and that these individualized responses are filtered through cultural perceptions of reality and transformed into various treatment strategies of care, euthanasia, and abandonment, in addition to common discriminatory customs, such as limitations on marriage eligibility.
Assessing Learning Outcomes In College Introductory Economics Courses: A Case Study, John Richards Mundy
Assessing Learning Outcomes In College Introductory Economics Courses: A Case Study, John Richards Mundy
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Many issues affecting economic education remain unresolved within the profession. Much scholarly attention in recent years relates to the teaching of college introductory economics principles in courses. This thesis analyzes the learning outcomes of students taking introductory college economics principles courses. Little basic research has been performed on the assessment of how students actually learn the concepts of economics. This thesis takes a unique approach to the assessment of learning outcomes. Following a pre- and post-test survey, students were scored on the basis of both their economic attitude sophistication, and their knowledge of content. The results were regressed against a …

Three Pioneering Women In Nicaraguan Theater: Dona Gladys Ramirez De Espinoza, Socorro Bonilla Castellon, And Lucero Millan, Maria-Tania Bandes-Becerra
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
If it is true that theater reflects the human condition, then it can be said that for three decades Nicaragua has been struggling with its own humanity. Some would argue this has been the case since the Somoza dynasty in Nicaragua which ended in 1979. As the Theater of Nicaragua is interwoven in its politics, this paper will bring the reader a closer view of that reality. In an analysis of the history of the theater of Nicaragua, three women have stood out. These three women---Dona Gladys Ramirez de Espinoza, Socorro Bonilla Castellon, and Lucero Millan, have made the theater …
Factors Affecting Recidivism At A Transitional Shelter For The Homeless, Scianna Elizabeth Bowman Augustine
Factors Affecting Recidivism At A Transitional Shelter For The Homeless, Scianna Elizabeth Bowman Augustine
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines factors affecting recidivism (shelter reentry) among two-parent households, female-headed households, and single women, through a study of selected households utilizing a transitional shelter for the homeless in Las Vegas, Nevada. The paper touches on the history of homelessness in America, and explores some of the factors related to the increase in homelessness on the national and local level. It examines the shelter system---in particular, the provision of transitional shelter---as the primary intervention designed to return individuals and families to self-sufficiency. The study found that the three household types did not differ significantly in terms of recidivism. However, …
Transgender Population: Barriers And Adaptions To Employment, Cecilie H Evans
Transgender Population: Barriers And Adaptions To Employment, Cecilie H Evans
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative study integrated literature and personal interviews to examine issues of employment among people from the transgender population. By incorporating interviews, employment is addressed from the transgender person's reference point. This allows for integral examination of personal or internal and environmental or external factors that impact the transgender person while seeking or maintaining employment. In a study of seven people, common themes appeared to influence employment such as the ability to pass, coming out and transitioning, employer and type of employment, stigmas faced such as being "outed," and attitude. These themes served as the foundation in developing social work …
Some New Approaches To Formulate And Estimate Friction-Bernoulli Jump Diffusion And Friction-Garch, Chihwa Kao
Some New Approaches To Formulate And Estimate Friction-Bernoulli Jump Diffusion And Friction-Garch, Chihwa Kao
Center for Policy Research
In this paper we propose a friction model with a Beroulli jump diffusion and a friction with GARCH to examine the exchange rates movements in Taiwan. The proposed model resolves the estimation problem associated with the stepwise movements of observed exchange rates. The specification maintains the desirable economic properties associated with movements in exchange rate returns and is empirically tractable. The AIC apparently favors the model based on Friction-GARCH model.
Geography, Industrial Organization, And Agglomeration Heteroskedasticity Models With Estimates Of The Variances Of Foreign Exchange Rates, Chihwa Kao
Center for Policy Research
This paper proposes a robust estimation procedure, the bounded influence estimate (BIS), which is robust against departure from the conditional normality of the autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) models to describe the behavior of exchange rates. First, the BIE identifies the additive outliers (AO, e.g., Fox 1972) caused by abnormal information arrivals which may be triggered by changes in domestic policies and international shocks. Identification of outliers allows us to analyze the major economic and political factors that contribute directly to the dramatic changes in exchange rates. Second, the performance of the BIE is compared with the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) …
The Influence Of An Active Postvention On The Length Of Time Elapsed Before Survivors Of Suicide Seek Treatment., Frank Ray Campbell
The Influence Of An Active Postvention On The Length Of Time Elapsed Before Survivors Of Suicide Seek Treatment., Frank Ray Campbell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Those who are significantly impacted by the death of someone to suicide are known as survivors of suicide. This study examined two groups of suicide survivors, one group received an active postvention model (APM), and the other group received no active postvention model. The study utilized both t-test and chi-square to compare the groups based on key demographic characteristics. The study compared model of postvention (active versus passive) for the time elapsed between the suicide and the survivors seeking treatment. The two groups studied were survivors who sought treatment at a well established metropolitan crisis intervention center in the southern …
Professional Culture And Efficacy Correlates Of Organizational Effectiveness In Cooperative Extension Services., Rebecca Elaine White
Professional Culture And Efficacy Correlates Of Organizational Effectiveness In Cooperative Extension Services., Rebecca Elaine White
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several important lines of inquiry have been developed during the past fifty years to study the complex nature of educational organizations. In particular, theorists, researchers, and educational policy makers have become increasingly concerned about the effectiveness of educational institutions. Recently, significant research and policy maker attention has been focused on issues of effectiveness of higher education. The Cooperative Extension Services as ancillary outreach units of state land grant universities are no exception and the extant literature has been focused primarily on outcomes as organizational effectiveness measures. This study addresses the need to develop more comprehensive conceptual frameworks for studying perceived …
Public Librarians And The Civil Rights Movement: Alabama, 1955-1965, Patterson Toby Graham
Public Librarians And The Civil Rights Movement: Alabama, 1955-1965, Patterson Toby Graham
Faculty Publications
Racial segregation in southern public libraries affected millions of African Americans before the Civil Rights movement, and for librarians in the South it created a conflict between professional and regional values. Ultimately, it was the efforts of black activists rather than librarians acting on their ethical impulses that ended library segregation. Librarians were constrained by local racial customs, Jim Crow laws, and, often, by their own racial attitudes. Also, librarians recognized that there were inherent dangers associated with defying the segregationists. There were a few, however, who challenged the racial status quo, and these individuals demonstrated the potential of librarians …
Pet Bonding And Pet Bereavement Among Adults, Kelli Brosam
Pet Bonding And Pet Bereavement Among Adults, Kelli Brosam
Masters Theses
This study was designed to examine the relationship between the intensity of bonding and grief responses among adults following the death of their dogs or cats. Three hypotheses were considered: 1) The strength of the bond between an adult and a pet will predict the intensity of grief following the death of that pet. Specifically, adults who are more strongly bonded with a pet will experience more intense grief following the death of that pet than adults who are less strongly bonded. 2) Regardless of type of animal, women will be more highly bonded to pets, and women will report …
The Lawyer's Philosophical Map And The Disputant's Perceptual Map: Impediments To Facilitative Mediation And Lawyering, Chris Guthrie
The Lawyer's Philosophical Map And The Disputant's Perceptual Map: Impediments To Facilitative Mediation And Lawyering, Chris Guthrie
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Riskin's categorization of mediation has engendered much debate among academics and practitioners. Although most in the mediation community accept Riskin's positive assertion that mediation as currently practiced includes both facilitation and evaluation, a vocal group of purist critics rejects Riskin's pluralist view of mediation on normative grounds. These purist critics -- including such prominent mediator-scholars as Professors Kim Kovach, Lela Love," and Josh Stulberg -- argue that mediation is in fact, and should be, solely a facilitative process "designed to capture the parties' insights, imagination, and ideas that help them to participate in identifying and shaping their preferred outcomes." For …
Interdisciplinary Education At Academic Health Centers: Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Its Delivery, Stephanie F. Gardner
Interdisciplinary Education At Academic Health Centers: Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Its Delivery, Stephanie F. Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Interdisciplinary care is a method of providing patient care that incorporates the efforts of various health care providers. Studies show this approach can improve patient care and decrease overall costs to the healthcare system. Despite the evidence for the benefits of interdisciplinary care, there are no well-defined models for training students during their didactic years to become members of an interdisciplinary team. This study determines the attitudes of administrators of professional schools toward interdisciplinary education, identifies perceived barriers to interdisciplinary education, examines the extent to which interdisciplinary education is occurring at academic health center campuses, and identifies the courses that …
Epidemiology Of Deviance, Gordon A. Crews
Epidemiology Of Deviance, Gordon A. Crews
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Deviance (Goode, 1997), in a general sense, is behavior that some members of a given society will find “offensive”. It is behavior which brings about, or would bring about if it were discovered, disapproval, punishment, condemnation, or hostility from another. This is any behavior that is likely to get the actor into “trouble”. Deviance is behavior which is considered to be outside the “bounds” of a given group or society. Another definition, in a more working sense, is “any departure from a social norm which does or could provoke sanctions” (p. 37).
Provocateurs For Justice, Jane H. Aiken
Provocateurs For Justice, Jane H. Aiken
Clinical Law Review
Clinical legal education offers unique opportunities to inspire law students to commit to justice. Merely providing a justice experience is not enough. We must provoke a desire to do justice in our students. As provocateurs, we determine where our students are in the developmental process toward "justice readiness." This article outlines those developmental stages and suggests interventions to assist students in their transition from stage to stage. Being "justice ready" requires sensitivity to the ways in which assumptions color all aspects of our cases. The article closes with suggestions and examples of how to critically reflect on assumptions that hinder …
Beyond Skills Training, Stephen Wizner
Beyond Skills Training, Stephen Wizner
Clinical Law Review
This article promotes a broad view of clinical legal education as having a political and moral purpose that informs the field's intellectual and skills-training functions. Consulting the history of the field, the author demonstrates that the clinical approach to legal education has always been rooted in a social justice mission. The author urges clinical teachers not only to teach legal knowledge and lawyering skills but also the value of pursuing social justice. The author uses the Yale clinical program to illustrate some of the ways in which clinical legal educators can use client-centered legal services work to teach students to …
Building Bridges, Building Walls: Collaboration Between Lawyers And Social Workers In A Domestic Violence Clinic And Issues Of Client Confidentiality, Jacqueline St. Joan
Building Bridges, Building Walls: Collaboration Between Lawyers And Social Workers In A Domestic Violence Clinic And Issues Of Client Confidentiality, Jacqueline St. Joan
Clinical Law Review
This article is the first in a series that examines the experience and impact on clients, students, and cases of lawyer, social worker and researcher collaboration in an interdisciplinary domestic violence clinic and the ethical challenges that such a design creates. After describing the collaborative structure of this particular clinic design, the author summarizes the reports of students and faculty about interdisciplinary collaboration, and makes suggestions for improvement in collaborative service delivery. The article reviews the current literature on interdisciplinary legal collaboration and evaluates alternative solutions to confidentiality dilemmas, and proposes the use of a confidentiality wall as a means …
Self -Efficacy And Human Caring Correlates Of Child Welfare Caseworker Performance In The Juvenile Courts., Sue Duvall Steib
Self -Efficacy And Human Caring Correlates Of Child Welfare Caseworker Performance In The Juvenile Courts., Sue Duvall Steib
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study explored the relationship between personal characteristics of casework staff in a public child welfare agency and the way in which they work with the courts and legal system. A set of six measures was developed or adapted for this research to explore theoretical linkages between the personal psychological variables of self-efficacy and human caring, and the way in which caseworkers participate in the formulation of agency decisions concerning families and children as well as the way in which their performance is assessed by judges hearing child dependency matters. The research also addressed the reliability and construct validity of …
Exploring Organizational Learning Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Qualitative Study Involving Parish Chairs Of Less Than Three Years Experience., Cathy Hirsch Hamilton
Exploring Organizational Learning Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Qualitative Study Involving Parish Chairs Of Less Than Three Years Experience., Cathy Hirsch Hamilton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This qualitative study was designed to facilitate the description, analysis and utilization of continual learning within the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES). The research linked exploration of a learning culture within an organization with the reflective practice of participatory action research methodology. Learning organizations promote knowledge sharing that allows for individual learning to make the transition into collective organizational learning. In order for transformative learning to occur, individuals must reflect on their actions to make sense of an experience. Explaining and thinking about what one is doing makes tacit knowledge explicit, therefore able to be shared and used for change. …

May 13, 1985, was one of the most tragic days in the history of Philadelphia. ln an effort to dislodge the troublesome back-to-nature group MOVE, the police department bombed its row house, inadvertently setting off a fire that engulfed two city blocks, displaced 53 families, and killed 11 people. It's hard to imagine that anything good could come out of an event like this, but it did. The MOVE fire served as the catalyst that propelled the fledgling West Philadelphia Improvement Corps into what is now one of the most far-reaching collaborations between an urban university and the schools in …

Practice In The Electronic Community, Roger A. Lohmann, John Mcnutt
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The Internet was at its inception a commons rather than a marketplace. Increasingly, however, communitarian notions have been overwhelmed by the internet as one huge shopping arcade. The potential is certainly there for this amazing technology to advance the causes of human freedom well-being and community. At the same time, however, this powerful set of technologies that in less than a decade have become nearly universal in scope and sweep, have the potential also to become simply another extension of the global economic marketplace. Far worse, there is also the potential to become a power tool for class domination or …
